Little Shunga Park

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Shunga Glen has everything you would expect of a park-style course in Topeka - decent hole design, good scenery, poorly-marked tees, and... lost disc potential. For being a super short course, it's actually kind of fun.

This course makes up for its lack of distance with some cleverly-placed trees. Hole 6 is a fairly tight and spicy tunnel shot, while hole 1 has one guardian tree. Hole 2 is a bit of a dogleg right.

Holes 4 and 5 are more open, offering more variety. They also play down, then back up a small hill.

Cons:

Being only six holes, there's a lot this course doesn't have. It's just so tiny that you'll miss any of the features if you're not paying attention. The holes are really short and not super tight

The tees are dirt and sometimes marked by white bricks in the ground, and are hard to find even with a GPS map. Maybe that gives you a chance to play safari layouts to try to get to 18 holes.

In some ways, this is a perfect course for beginners, but a shank can put you in the river on 3 or 4, and hole 2 is actually kinda hard. I can imagine a beginner hitting every tree available on hole 6, but that is kind of the point of the hole.

Other Thoughts:

I just want to toss out that Shunga Glen Park is one of the best park names I've ever seen. The area the course is in just looks like a glen. Although it's technically not a valley, it is narrow.

I would like the course to cross the bridge after hole 4 and have three open holes on the other side of the park, just to get to nine holes.

The course slightly favors shots that finish right. It's really only holes 2 and 3 that are this way, but that is a third of the course.
