Parks Dept has done a great job drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

For the space given. Very well laid out. Had only played before when it was wet and it more hassle than fun. Today it was dry and so much fun.

Cons:

Only 9 baskets. But long and short tees. Which do make it different challenges.

Other Thoughts:

Beautiful park. Amenities are nice ie: trash cans, bathrooms and well maintained

Fun Short Course drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 15, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun little short course. Good layout. Marked well. Park is very clean. Restrooms and water fountains on site. Able to play a couple rounds after work. Great for beginners and kids too!

Cons:

If you can't keep it in the fairway, you may lose a disc in the waist-high grass. If you have to go searching, better have Deep Woods Off!

Short little course good for practicing approaches 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Other Thoughts:

This is a short, predominately wooded course that plays in a large park. Most shots are under 300 feet of distance and if you have a good short game you should easily be under par. If you want to practice approaching the pin through some tricky wood lines, this is the course for you.

A High Quality Nine Holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.802 Rating) A two tee Rec course with several great wooded holes on the second half.
- FINISH - After the first four holes of this course I had written off any possibility of giving this course a 3.0. Then hole (5). Which was a striking wooded line over a tranquil small creek. Then hole (6), and even more awesome looking line over a creek. And then (7), (8) and (9), which were all great looking lines as well. I like it when a course finishes strong.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Two thirds of this course plays in the woods and every one of them looks well above average. I played 45 unique holes this day and the three most beautiful of the grouping I'd say are from this course. The lines were very well maintained and lush for my appearance. The creek that passes threw was a meandering wonderful menace. The bridges that crossed it were well built and as were the other course infrastructure items. Sycamore was just such an incredibly pleasant walk and play kind of course.
- FUN FACTOR - I'd be willing to bet there's a nice little local scene on this course. The back tees offer the perfect balance of mild challenges and easygoingness. Great for small leagues or small social group play. Easy to make 18 holes by playing both tees over two loops. Birdies will tally up here for higher skilled players and aces will not be elusive. The odds of losing a disc and/or searching in overgrowth will happen, but the risks are only moderate.
- AMENITIES AND EXTRAS - All the basics were well done. First off, two large concrete tee pads on each hole and they have paint markings on them to designate the skill level. As for the baskets, new Mach IIs. There are also a few benches and the signage is great. I'll touch on the signs more just below here. Off the course there are restrooms, drinking fountains, shelters, picnic tables and playgrounds.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - I had no issues getting around, I didn't even consult the map on my phone. No image of the course map on site, but there's a gate signaling the entrance to the course by one of the parking areas. The tee signage is detailed and has all the info one would need. One tee sign was missing on (4), which I'll fathom will get replaced soon.
- QUICK PLAY - My wife told me I had a half hour to play it, and I was back in the car in 25. The course layout is compact, but not too compact. The flow is great and the transitions are easy to follow even without a map reference.
- MAINTENANCE - The course and park were both well maintained for my visit.

Cons:

There's nothing of substance wrong with this course. Everything listed below is either an insignificant blemish, a site constraint related comment or is a preferential note.
- LACK OF "PRO" CHALLENGE - The back tees on this course are listed as "pro" tees on the signage, which is something I find laughable. I'm no pro, or anywhere close to one and I personally found the challenges presented to be rec level at best from the back tees. I personally finished 3 down as an Intermediate who does well in the woods, but I didn't even play well. If I lived in the area, I could see myself achieving 7 or 8 down on a day when the trees don't conspire against me. There are zero Pros that are going to be rattled by 300-foot zero obstacle holes. I think the front tees are novice level caliber. Some beginners may even enjoy Sycamore too, especially if going for the pleasant nature walk aspect.
- NINE FAIRWAYS - I think I've used this con only a couple times before, and I think I only used it for when I thought more was still possible. The nine that are here are solid and I wanted to taste a little more when I finished. I hope they can figure out how to conjure up additional holes.
- WATER HAZARDS - First off, I want to point out that the beautiful creek that dices threw the layout makes the course better. I only mention this as I know there are some that don't want to lose plastic... ever. Or at least they want to be warned to bring a couple throw-aways hence this note. For my play here, there was a steady 1-foot deep current running down the creek. If the water were a couple feet higher, it could easily carry a disc downstream and bury it deep in organic debris and sand. For all we know, a hundred years from now there could be disc bearing trees dropping Aviars, Buzzes and Rocs along the old creek bed.
- FLAT AND MODEST HOLE VARIETY - Before starting the course there's a 30 foot hill off to the right. It never comes into play... Bummer. This course is flat flat. excluding the creek bed, i don't think a hole varies by more 8 feet in grade. Thankfully the woods and creek make up for this lacking aspect. There's a couple open shots in the beginning as well, but they felt a little meh compared to the following holes.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the better nine holers I've ever played. When I say better, I'm talking top ten and flirting with the top five among my played niners. I've played 156 of them as of this review. It's hard to believe that among the five 18 holers I've bagged in the Memphis metro as of this review, that I personally rate this one better than four of them (Bud Hill The Ridge, Sea Isle, Shelby Farms and Mid South). Sycamore checks all the important course quality boxes. Great amenities, beautiful groomed fairways, and solid hole variety. The only big thing missing, is nine more holes of similar quality. It seems like there is space to do more holes out here, but I'm not certain. As it sits, the course is not destination worthy imo. I think courses like Bud Hill Original and Meeman Shelby probably wrap that title up for Memphis. However, for those passing through the south side of the metro, I highly recommend making the short detour and checking this one out. This is a great example of what can be done with a small plat of land.

Short But Steady Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Deep in what seems to be an affluent area lies Hinton Park . It is a multi use one that also features a 9 hole disc golf course called Sycamore Creek . If you drive slowly into the park and see the very nice bathrooms , park close . A large wooden sign with the words Disc Golf will direct you down a path towards the first hole .
THE EQUIPMENT - The park system here spared no expense putting this together . There are 2 tee pads per hole , 4' X maybe 8 or 9' . The short tees are identified by a red stripe at the back of the pads , and the long tees have a blue stripe . These looked classy . The signage at each hole was also top of the line , with hole # , par , distance and flight path . There are nice wood Next Tee signs in available spots , but only necessary in the woods for 1 set of holes . The baskets were average , maybe Mach 2 and non numbered . There are some nice bridges spanning the creeks in the woods .
THE LANDSCAPE - There is no elevation here to speak of . There are a couple of open holes early in the round , with mowed fairways and rough maybe 18" to 2' high . Most of the course sits in a woods . where there is a creek that runs through fairways . The woods is cleared out and paths make it easy to follow .
THE HIGHLIGHTS - There is nothing here to challenge a disc golfer with any experience at all . The long tees ( blue ) average maybe 260' . but the course is still a fun play .
SIGNATURE HOLE - #8 , only 252' from the long tees , is a tight fairway dogleg left that goes over a creek .
THE TIME - The course plays so short that you can complete your round in 25-30 minutes . A foursome will get through this in 50 minutes . The course is pretty fun , so you might want to go through here twice .
DISC RISK - Very low . Even though the grass is high off the fairway on the open holes , the park is so well manicured , you won't spend a lot of time looking for your midrange/driver . The creek looks to be always low , just a hassle crawling into the creek bed to retrieve your disc .
POPULAR - There were 2 other groups at 9:00 on a Sunday morning playing when I was . This would be a great destination for a local or family to unwind after dinner or on a weekend .
The disc golf course sits away from other park activities . I doubt that you see any non players near fairways during your round .
Check out the lake near where you park your car . If I was a local , I would come to this park even if there was no course .

Cons:

CHALLENGE - Even from the Blue tees , this can be a birdie fest for the precise player . You will still have to hit a line or 2 , but you will crave more substance to the course . Elevation , lack of tight openings , water . It's just not here .
PARKING - parking near the start/finish of the course might be your biggest challenge of the day . spaces are limited .
BE AWARE - Some of the fairways in the woods sit close together . It would take a ricochet , but someone could still be hit with a putter/midrange errant drive . Not likely , though .
9 - Only 9 holes . I wish there were more , but ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Other Thoughts:

When I saw the hole lengths on the scorecards , then saw the 2 tee pads on hole 1 , I couldn't figure out why the city put a pro pad on this course since it was still on the short side . I don't think they put this course in for Challenge . Instead , they installed a course where the fun factor was high . I wasn't near as much challenged as I was entertained . The parks department designed a course that you can take in the atmosphere and socialize . It would seem likely that you could latch onto a solo or group and play along with them , since the locals seemed friendly . We took a drive through the park and agreed it was well constructed and scenic .
MY RECOMMENDATION - The perfect course for newbies . This is also great for an after-dinner or weekend round with the family . This is a great place for locals to get together , socialize , play a couple of rounds , then hang out at the park . Intermediates and up can either use the course to try out new midranges , putters or just practice . Not far off the belt and I-40 , this is a good leg stretch for the traveler that might be pressed for time , and an easy pickup for the course bagger . I know the course is short , and I don't say this about very many 9 hole courses that aren't located in Florida , but if in the Memphis area , PLAY IT !!

Pros:

-Signs, tees all good and new, functional and well built.
-Clean, manicured.
-Mix of shots for beginners to learn on.
-Lacking in thick rough (except tall grass).

Cons:

-It's not for pros or anything if you want to call that a con.

Other Thoughts:

Designed for beginners, pros may have fun throwing either set of tees by making a challenge like 'putters only' as well.

Fun Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Attractive, very well-maintained, great signage, good teepads.

- Only 9 holes, but some opportunities for different shot shaping.

- Nice combination of woods and open. A couple holes in an open field with short grass fairways and high, thick roughs. Then a number of holes in the woods around a small creek.

- Not too much risk of losing discs in the woods. Creek is very small, woods isn't very thick, holes are short.

- Not much traffic on the course the couple times I've played it.

- Located in a nice, family-oriented public park, but situated off to the side so that there's not really any danger of other park users wandering across a fairway.

Cons:

- Extremely short course. Even from the long tees, most holes are around 250'.

- It's only 9 holes. You can play both sets of tees to make it 18, as others have mentioned. But they're still the same holes. Those other tee pads won't trick you into thinking you're playing a different 9.

- No real elevation changes. Not the course's fault, just the fact of the area.

- Definite risk of losing discs in the open holes because of the high rough (which honestly isn't really that much of a con, it's fun to have a real rough). If you keep in the fairway, you won't possibly lose one. But if you griplock something out into the middle of the tall grass, you could have a really hard time finding it.

Other Thoughts:

For just being 9 very short holes, this is a really great course. But that doesn't change the fact that it's 9 very short holes. If there were other courses nearby, it'd be a perfect place to go for a quick 9 to warm up or a way to sneak in 9 more holes after a round. If I lived near it, I'm certain I'd go get a quick round in very frequently. But as is, it feels like a long drive to a little course.

Located in Hinton Park, access off of E Holmes Rd. Park in a spot near the first crosswalk, before the restrooms (which are rather nice), and follow the path that goes past the man-made circular mound. Layout is pretty self-explanatory from there.

Love the short course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is well maintained and great condition. Signage is wonderful. Although most holes are short, there is very tall rough to lose your disc in if you get off the fairway. In the woods, plenty of trees. Both Pros and amateur tee pads. I will usually play one round from the amateur and follow up with another from the pros as it makes the holes play a little different.

Cons:

Very tall rough on several holes. Not easy to find disc if they fly into the middle.

Other Thoughts:

A little far from my house, but would play again when I get a chance.

Pros:

The course was well maintained with nice concrete tee pads. Good mixture of medium distance and birdy/ace holes. Absolutely loved everything about this course. Not to mention there is great parking with super nice bathrooms.

Cons:

Honestly the only con I have isn't that there isn't another 9 to make it a full 18.

Nice and New 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice new course in what looks to be a brand new park. Well marked with Pro and Am concrete tee pads and nice signs on each hole. Also other signs to direct you to the next hole.

Cons:

Some paths were water logged, even with the mulch that was laid down. Many of the holes are short so leave your distance drivers at home.

Other Thoughts:

Nice challenging little course. 6 holes in the trees and 3 in an open field. Would be great if it was a full 18 but you can always play it twice.
