A Solid Recreational Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.364 Rating) A lightly wooded easy going niner.
- FUN FACTOR - Taylor is going to be an excellent local league course. The course was laid out to appeal to the largest segment of the player population, Recreational level. Birdies can be had by 800 rated Novice level players and Intermediates will still have to work for it to score well. Taylor is also the friendliest course in town to beginners. The forgiving landscape and negligible disc loss potential will win the hearts of many players.
- TEES - Concrete tees measuring 10 feet long is a great start.
- CHAINS - Pretty blue coated Veteran baskets.
- NAVIGATION - Course map by tee (1), nice tee signs and next tees generally in view from each basket.
- QUICK PLAY - I think a solo could do one loop in less than 30 minutes.
- MAINTENANCE - Great course and park upkeep. I didn't see any trash and the grass was mowed through-out.

Cons:

A nice course in general, but you can tell right away it's not a Houck design. Overall only minor issues and an ordinary landscape.
- BASKET AND TEE SEPARATION - Great thought-out the course, except one time. The back tee on (8) is twenty feet from basket (7). Perhaps the back tee was added after the fact.
- BACKWARD TEES - Interestingly, this is another course in this general region that has built the tees backwards, as the front side widens instead of the back. I found myself starting my run up from off of the back side edges several times.
- TEE COLOR DESIGNATIONS - I don't take off points for this, but the Red tees are the back tees and the front tees are the White tees. This flies in the face standard practice.
- NO LOOP - After finishing (9) it's a 600 foot walk back to tee (1).
- WALKING PATH - The course plays through the same area as a winding walking path and it comes into play on six of the nine holes. Not a major issue as the course is mostly open to see the walkers and joggers. I would expect some waiting at the tee on occasion.
- UNIQUENESS - Like the other two courses in town, this is another one theme course. The tee shots are either completely open or lightly wooded. Ok maybe holes (6) and (8) are tweener moderately wooded shots. No water features other than a likely dry mini creek, and the elevation maxes out at roughly 15 feet on any one hole. (6) and (7) are the only moderately interesting shots.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Most parks are nice, and Talyor Park is no different. The only reason I list this in the cons is because the course falls on the lower half of my personal subjective scale. As stated above, no water features, too lightly wooded and no massive elevation movements. Overall, I scored the course roughly 40 percentile.

Other Thoughts:

In the span of a few years, the Dothan region went from zero courses to three (Eastgate and Diamond). With Diamond pretty much abandoned now, the local choices are going to be a long open Eastgate course or this lightly wooded one. I have a feeling that for newer thru Recreational players, and in the summer time in general, that Taylor is going to be the go-to spot. If I lived in town, I'm sure I'd play both. For the adventurous player looking to hit exotic courses, there is no reason yet to come to Dothan. I've played every course within 90 minutes of here and the options in that range are not spectacular either. Regardless, still a nice spin if in the area. I've played 132 nine holers as of this review, and would put Taylor into my top twenty for that grouping.
- CHALLENGE - Too lightly wooded for my personal preference as the technical aspect is very much lacking. I want to believe that many locals will throw two loops using the 6 back tees on the second time through. In this set-up, the overall challenge falls right in the middle of all courses I've played to date. The tee shot from back tee (9), is one I'd likely only birdie with a long throw in.

A Good Use of Space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

>bathrooms>water>shot selection>tee signs>DD Veteran baskets

Cons:

>some tee pads are extremely slick>walkers obstruct play on a few holes>9 holes

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a fine course. It's a great course to go out and learn or play casual rounds on. Could use some resurfacing on some of the pads, but all in all, a reasonable course.

Great for beginners! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very well maintained course. Grass, trees, and all other factors were well trimmed. - Had a fair mix of open shots and slightly more technical shots. Also used some slight changes in elevation to make shots more interesting. - Easy to navigate, makes a good loop to finish fairly close to the start. - Playing from the pro tees add a good bit of challenge- Great course for the whole family. Good variation in hole length as well, offering good opportunities for new players to do things that they are proud of.

Cons:

- Crosses the walking track once or twice, but as far as I could tell conflict would be very easy to avoid. Hard to even consider this as a con.

Other Thoughts:

Though this course is short and can be played through fairly quickly, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely play multiple rounds here on my time out. If you are near this course, it is worth a visit.
