What We've Got Here Is... Failure To Communicate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.164 Rating) A lower Recreational level school course that needs some layout tweaks.
- MAINTENANCE - Like most schools, the open areas are nicely mowed and free of trash and debris. The one wooded line on hole (8) was somewhat overgrown on my appearance. Hole (9) had some thick chest high grasses as well on the right side. So overall mostly good for my appearance.
- RECREATIONAL FRIENDLY - The holes distances and obstacles will work good for those between an 800 and 900 player rating. I was honestly surprised by the modest difficulty considering the other middle school courses I've played. More challenging than nearby North Jasper Park, but a walk-in-the-park compared to the nearby Eagle course.
- CHAINS - Patriot baskets in good shape as of Dec 2019.
- NAVIGATION - Reasonable. The course sort-of plays in a loop. Several tee signs can be spotted from the prior basket. No navigational cues, but I was still able to get around without any maps on my first round here.
- QUICK PLAY - I took pictures and was done in 45 minutes.
- GROW THE SPORT - I could see the Middle school using the layout for gym class. The layout is somewhat forgiving and beginner friendly, which is good for kids I suppose. The most concerning aspect for newer players is not the difficulty, but rather it's the chance to hit things other than basket and trees.

Cons:

Plenty of issues with the execution of this course.
- MULTI USE HAZARDS - Other school activities and property comes into play far too many times. Hole (2) throws over a parking lot. Hole (3) throws over a parking lot and driveway, and then finishes near a playground. The tee shot on (4) also has the playground in play. Hole (6) plays down a driveway. Hole (7) plays near school buildings. Hole (9) plays down a driveway. Finally, hole (10) plays over batting cages. That's seven of the twelve holes with issues.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - Intermediates and above won't be challenged or entertained.
- SIGNAGE - Professionally done, but the only useful info on the tee signs are hole number and distance.
- TEES - Natural tees with no defined throwing line.
- HOLE 8 - This was my favorite looking tee shot. A heavily wooded blind tunnel shot. So why is it a con? Cause I threw blind, ran up and found no basket. It turns out, it would normally not be blind, had the basket been there. Stolen? Hit by a tree? Sad regardless, it would have been a cool shot.
- UNIQUENESS - I played courses with worse variety, but the natural features here, just aren't going to produce an intriguing layout. Several baskets can be attacked from every angle. The obstacles are mostly manmade, which is something I personally don't like. Hole (5) is a decent blind hook to the right. (10) was oddly fun to throw blindly over a batting cage. (11) plays down a nice swale. The rest are forgettable.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I'm going with bottom 5 percent. Lots of unnatural features are in view the entire time. Parts of the school are not looking in good shape. A couple school yard junk piles were observed.
- PARKING - Don't park in the school lot. There's a gravel parking area a bit further east that's located right next to tee (1) and Basket (12).

Other Thoughts:

The course will probably work for Valley School students. If it were in my neighborhood, I'd play occasionally. Of the three courses in the jasper area (The Eagle, North Jasper Park and Valley), this one is going to be ranked third by almost everyone. Unless you are a course bagger like me, attend Valley Middle School, or live within a couple miles, there will be no reason to come here.
