Reimagined Valpo DG

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- newer Mach V baskets
- nice full color tee signs with pars, distances, and maps
- newer concrete tees
- new layout is vastly improved to avoid pedestrian traffic
- some gently rolling hills are well incorporated to add to course interest
- hole numbers on baskets
- some nice mature trees incorporated on many holes
- area of campus is mostly dedicated to disc golf
- navigation is very straightforward overall
- hole 9 loops back to start of course/parking nicely
- ample visitor parking on campus
- very nicely maintained course/campus
- moderate technical challenge from tree obstacles

Cons:

- no real amenities
- baskets can be a little hard to see; more color would help
- fairways for holes 3 and 9 play a little close to each other
- fairways for holes 4 and 8 play a little close to each other
- holes 1 and 2 could be unplayable during very wet periods
- navigation from hole 2 to hole 3 could use some signage
- hole 1 tee is on a walking path and doesn't have a dedicated tee
- some safety hazards on holes 8 and 9 playing near busy road
- most holes do not force much shot shaping or notable challenge

Other Thoughts:

I originally was a little hesitant to come play the course at Valparaiso University due to reviewers mentioning the safety hazards and questioning whether you could even play this course while school was in session. Well, I'm so glad I came - at least, I was eventually. At first I couldn't find the hole 1 fairway to save my life until I realized this course had been redesigned! The start of the course has moved, and it has changed for the better. Based on user feedback, the course was redesigned to avoid walking areas of campus and it clearly had thought put into it.

The course plays on the outskirts of campus and takes advantage of some green space between campus and major roads as well as a retention area. There is virtually nobody using this space besides disc golfers, excluding the shared walking path tee for hole 1. I am concerned if there was a lot of rain, the hole 1 and 2 "fairways" could become a bit of a lake; the retention area is there for a reason. However, this sort of design is really nothing new for disc golfers.

The course plays over some respectable rolling hills for NW Indiana and forces some uphill and downhill shots. Mature trees add some intrigue and limited shot shaping, although the course is pretty open overall. A few fairways play pretty close to each other; during my round I didn't see another human being playing disc golf, but if the course were busy this is something to be aware of. Playing near the busy road on holes 8 and 9 bothered me more than anything. This is the space available, but it is not ideal.

The equipment here is top notch, with brand new baskets, concrete tees, and full color tee signs. Navigation was very clear except for the longer traverse between holes 2 and 3 which it would be nice to have marking for. This is a pretty fun round though there is nothing particularly unique about the course. If you are in the area bagging niners it's well worth the visit, but nothing to go out of your way for. I'd probably put this between a 2 and a 2.5; there's just nothing spectacular about it but I think it's a bit more fun than a typical 2. It's a solid course that I don't consider boring.

There are no real amenities on this course besides ample visitor parking. I'm sure there are restrooms somewhere on campus if you are desperate. Overall, my round at Valparaiso was fun once I figured out where I was going. I've marked the old layout extinct and added new pictures and hole info so this should be more clear now.
