The course at Vernon Schrade Middle School is what you ought to expect from most middle school courses: simple, boring, little infrastructure. It scratches the itch but always leaves you wanting more.

The first few holes are a bit shorter and a few trees come into play as well as the school building itself on hole 2. As the course progresses, the distances stretch out quite a bit longer for a school course. After 9 holes you find yourself a pretty decent distance from where you started.

The tees get the job done, the baskets are in decent condition, and navigation is straight forward. If you live nearby then this is a decent practice course or a good place to bring young beginners. Other than that, students and course baggers only.

-This course was built to learn the basics with many wide open shots and a few challenging features.

-Hole #3 is a fun skill shot that you have to curve around some trees and a little technical.

-#4 gives you a chance of an ace as you throw between a couple of distant trees.

-#9 has a large grassy drainage area that you can go over or choose to go around a tree to avoid the long toss. Nice way to end your round.

-Intermediate players who what a good place to get a quick workout and practice multiple shoots will also like this the low traffic on this neighborhood course.

-Also has a practice basket as you drive up.

Due to being on School grounds, you do have to wait until 4:30 on school days, though it is a handy course if you live in the area.

-- Tee signs with par, distance and a map of the hole that shows the few obstacles.
-- Nice distance variation: 2 holes less than 250 feet; 4 holes 300-350; 2 holes longer than 400 (No. 8 is 506).
-- Baskets are numbered; they are stick-on labels below the catching basket, so they are not visible from far away.
-- White stones with blue arrows to facilitate course navigation. Those are mostly unnecessary, but they are a nice touch.

-- Very few trees, no water and very flat ground make this far from ideal land for disc golf.
-- Tees are natural. The front is clearly marked, but on my first visit (2022) the ground was SO dry that in some instances, the ground was cracked enough that trying to use the tee pad could cause an injury. It was somewhat better in June 2023.
-- Long walk from 9 to 1, which are on opposite sides of the school building.
-- No. 2 is the best designed hole on the course, but it's dangerous. It's 207 feet, RHBH around trees guarding the basket. However, in addition to likelihood of hitting the building (or a window), the No. 3 tee pad (right beside the building) is in danger from a slightly short hyzer shot. Look at the photo on this site from the 2 tee pad and see the people standing on the No. 3 tee pad. A slight overthrow on No. 2 could reach the parking lot or the walkway to the front of the school.
-- Not available before 4 p.m. on school days. Campus police enforce that. Also, hole 8 plays near football/soccer practice field, so you might have to skip that hole if you play during the school year.
-- No map on site.
-- No benches.
-- No restroom.
-- No water.

-- Park in front of the school and head south. No. 1 tees from near Danridge Road (front of the school), throwing west. Course then plays clockwise around the school and finishes on the other side of the parking lot.
-- This isn't a great course, but it is a course, so let's try to keep it available. I found half a dozen beer cans lying on the ground at the No. 8 tee on my first visit. If that continues, I wouldn't be surprised if the school pulls the course.
-- No. 9 could be a cool finishing hole. It's 383 feet and throws over what appears to be a dry pond. If that were a pond, it would be great, but the 200-foot water carry might be too much for the middle school kids.
-- Tee signs and wooden 4x4s in ground that mark the front of the tee have different distances on about half of the holes, but the difference is generally less than 10 feet.
