Pros:
- great full color tee signs
- concrete tees
- high quality Innova DISCatchers color coded per course (red - short, yellow - long)
- minor amenities, such as garbage can at start and bench near midway point
- next tee signs on baskets help navigation
- some rolling hills incorporated
Cons:
- some trail crossing hazards to look out for
- very short
- OB grasses could make finding discs a challenge at times
- plays through same area as long course, though interference seemed minimal
- relatively flat with few obstacles - mainly an accuracy challenge to stay out of the tall grass
- hole 6 ends fairly far from parking lot
Other Thoughts:
Walnut Hollow Short is a respectable course, with high end concrete tees, full color tee signs, and quality baskets. The park seems well maintained and has a nice info sign at the beginning showing the layout of the 2 courses. Cary did a very nice job with signage at these courses.
I think the main cons here are the lack of obstacles and the short length of the course. I don't view the length as a huge con, considering there's a full 18 hole course at the same location. The 6 hole course is very beginner friendly and would be great for younger kids as well. Some of the holes are under 200'. You won't be particularly challenged here if you're an experienced player, but it's a fun enough round if you can stay out of the tall grasses.
Hole 4 was by far my favorite hole since it incorporated some slight elevation change and went into a wooded area with some tree obstacles. Otherwise, the course is somewhat repetitive. I really do appreciate all of the next tee signs and color coded baskets, which made this round quick and fun.
All in all, this course is well maintained but doesn't have anything particularly unique about it. If you're in the area it's fun enough for a quick round but otherwise there are more exciting courses all around. Fel-Pro which is also in Cary is much more popular.
