Waneka Lake, Bagged & Tagged 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Adequate baskets, though single-chain

-Nice concrete tees

-Kiosk w/ map near 1, signs are A+ - very informative w/ skematic and OB info, course is relatively easy to navigate w/ updated map I uploaded

-Nice for a quick round, ace runs on some holes, good for beginners

-Restrooms on the west side near 8 & 9

-1 & 2 complement each other well. They're longer shots for the course, w/ 1 being a nice 400'+ RHBH and 2 following up w/ a fun RHFH

Cons:

-Does not play a loop - I'd suggest parking near 8 & 9 on the west side so you don't have to hike back to the other side of the lake when you've finished

-Doesn't flow very well: After #1 you have to walk a ways to #2 which then shoots back towards the way you came. Then there's a long walk between 2 & 3, and then again between 7 & 8.

-tee signage doesn't face direction of basket on several holes - not a huge con but always throws me off for a second

-Holes 3-7 seem a little cramped w/ potential for crossfire, and a couple holes play near the street which can be distracting.

Other Thoughts:

Waneka Lake DG was a nice quick bag, despite the gaps in flow. It plays around part of a small lake that seems used quite a bit by the locals. There were people fishing, swimming, and walking the track around the lake when I played. As such, you can have a few distractions while you're playing, though the other park users don't seem like they'd get in the way much as the course is kind of crammed into some unused space on the east side of the park.

I feel like if they were to switch #1 & 2, while also switching the direction of 1, the flow would improve greatly on the front 7. 3-7 are rather one-dimensional and forgettable. If I remember correctly you can get by w/ RHBH's on all of them. 8 would have to be the signature hole, having you shoot toward a basket that's situated among some large lava rocks. 9 plays back the opposite direction from the rocks, which add a little diffculty as you have a large one right in front of the tee blocking your view of the basket completely, however, there's no real obstacle past it so it's a relatively safe blind shot.

I may not go out of my way to play here again but it's not a bad 9 hole course; I think it'd be cool if they were allowed to bring the lake into play somehow though, the only real view of it you get is if you walk up to it before/after the round.

Pros:

- concrete tee pads
- good tee signs and a course map at the parking lot
- there is a good variety of distances on the course ranging from 200 to 450 feet

Cons:

- baskets are old and are single chained
- the layout is very spread out and somewhat silly, the first two holes are way to the right of the parking lot. Then you walk back down the fairway of 1 to get to 3. Then holes 8 and 9 are a long walk away from 7. Which puts you a long walk away from the parking lot
- the course is mostly open and most shots are boring

Other Thoughts:

This course has some fun shots, I think if I lived in the area I would just play 3-7 for a real quick round.

Pros:

They should have 18 according to the site soon(2015 summer would assume that is now or shortly) flow from 3-7 is nice easy to locate your pin from the signs on the post.

Cons:

Grass looks like it may have been mowed at one point this season, easy to lose a disc, the back nine is still not open for play, the lake while it is there, isnt even close to being in play or a threat to your disc, poor use of space, and tee one goes way out to two then way back to reach hole 3.

Other Thoughts:

i think with proper course management, and the addition of the back nine this could be a "nice" course, but i dont see it happening.
