An Average City Park Plus Elevation

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- some decent elevation change incorporated to make this a bit more than just a city park
- disc golf is fairly well isolated in multi-use park
- ample parking
- Innova DISCatcher baskets look brand new
- next tee arrows on baskets are helpful; navigation is clear
- well maintained park; mowed and very clean
- some good length for a 9 hole course requiring decent power drives

Cons:

- natural tees only
- mostly open; limited hazards
- taller grasses lining fairways can make finding discs a bit more difficult
- tee signs only have hole number and par/distance, maps would be an improvement
- a bit of backtracking in the layout, but not too bad
- no numbers on baskets
- holes 1 and 9 throw over a walking path creating a bit of a safety hazard
- middle of course plays very close to ball field outfield walls

Other Thoughts:

Ripp Park in Waunakee is a nice, newer city disc golf course. It has a few rolling hills to add some intrigue beyond the typical suburban niner, but that's about it. There are limited obstacles and limited challenge here. The length is good for a 9 hole course and requires some disc variety, but this is not going to be a destination for anyone. Ripp is suitable for bagging, local play, or a casual round as needed when in the area.

This course should be fairly family friendly, and the park is a nice place for kids with varied activities. Typical park amenities are present, and the disc golf mostly doesn't present hazards to ther parkgoers. This course plays mostly "out and back", heading downhill towards the ball fields in the park and then hiking back up the hill a bit towards the water tower/parking lot.

Some concrete tees and better tee signs would be improvements, but really, for the caliber of course here, it may not be worth it. There's no real X-factor here, but it's great to see the park being kept up so well and it's good to see disc golf in so many communities. This is a good introduction to what the sport can offer for those unfamiliar with it.

Grip It N Rip It

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- New Innova Disc catcher baskets
- Primarily plays in disc golf only area
- Good length for a 9 hole, get to bring out the distance driver
- Nice use of elevation
- Free
- Ample parking, seems to be less crowded typically than other area courses

Cons:

- No teepads
- Some confusing navigation, despite being only a 9 hole
- Few trees, very exposed to wind
- Not particularly beginner friendly
- Many holes the only challenge is the length, so plays a little monotonous

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course a few times now and I've been struggling with how to write my review. Nearly every pro and con you can "yes, but..." to. Let's start with the positive. I'm glad this course exists. The scene here in the Madison area is really strong and all local courses get a lot of play, so anytime a new community invests resources into a place to play I'm all for it. This course also gives you something different than your typical 9 hole, in that you will get to break out your distance driver. Only 3 holes play less than 300' and one of those is 295'. You just don't see that much in a public park 9 hole. Of course, this means that unless you have a big arm, scoring is tough. In some cases very tough. This course is very open and exposed to wind often. Hole 8 for example, is 345' uphill, often plays into a ripping headwind. It functionally plays 450'. This is a par 3. In other words, it's not the public park pitch and putt you take a newbie to.

There's a lot of little things about this course that could make it much better. One is the lack of teepads. I really wish they hadn't skimped there. The natural teepads have already begun to erode into depressions. The tee signs are nice but small. Surprisingly, the layout is somewhat confusing. There's several areas where you need to backtrack from the basket to the next teepad, or walk around a corner to find the tee sign affixed to the baseball fence. The elevation use is nice, but on many holes that and the distance are the only challenge - the basket itself is just out in the open. Some more trees on the course would be welcome.

Overall, this course probably should be rated as above average in terms of public park 9 holers, but some of the little cons really irk me. It's probably more like a 2.75, but I'm rounding down to a 2.5. The lack of concrete teepads and the relative blandness of the course keep me from going higher. With some of those improvements it could get to a 3. I try not to rate difficulty as a pro or con, since that comes down to the individual player, but know that this course is often windy and that combined with the length can make it a frustrating round if you're not used to that and/or you don't have high arm speed. It's just not that high on my list of courses in the area, but I will likely be back.

Pros:

Ripp Park is a pretty well maintained park. Trash was picked up, grass was cut, and it's generally pretty clear that a lot of work goes into keeping this place looking nice.

The baskets are brand new and catch really well. They have arrows on the baskets that point to the next tee, which helps with navigation.

Course flow is very intuitive. Once you find the first tee, it's pretty smooth sailing from there.

For the most part, the chance of losing a disc is pretty slim, but some areas of the course do have thick prairie grass which will devour discs.

Cons:

The course is pretty vanilla. There's no signature "wow" hole and the holes generally feel the same, with the exception of maybe the first two holes. Not many trees or elevation change. The biggest obstacle we encountered was the wind, which aligns with what Vince wrote in the prior review. I do think his 3.5 rating is a bit on the generous side.

Not too much replay value. I really don't see myself planning to come back.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, it's fantastic that Waunakee installed a course in their city. It's certainly not a destination course, but it is nice that Waunakee now has baskets and a course so people don't have to drive to Madison to play.

The Ripp Park Rippers!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 6, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great new baskets!
-Grassy fairways
-Simple navigation
-Course map posted
-Good signage
-Arrows in baskets point to next tee
-Plenty of elevation
-Plenty of parking
-Dog and cart friendly

Cons:

-Natural tees (Bricks in ground to direct)
-Some wide open holes
-Heavy pines that eat discs parts of course
-The rough is thick in some areas, especially right side of hole 6.
-Lower part of course can become soggy with wet weather

Other Thoughts:

This is honestly one of the better nine hole courses in Dane County for sure! Great use of few obstacles in park. Intermediate level distance with holes between 215-360 feet. The main flaw is natural tee pads which may change in the long run. But if you're in the area I'd definitely give this course a shot!
THE WIND IS THE BIGGEST HAZARD. If it's windy that day at all you will likely struggle with putting and driving. Makes it fun but also super challenging. This course just opened up and has just enough challenge for top players but also a great place to take family or newbies out. The park is huge with about every sport you can think of played here along with nice shelters and walkways. Also a nice water tower near a small sledding hill. The course part plays along elevation changes and some pine trees behind the tennis court and baseball diamonds. The pine trees near holes one and two will eat your discs. There are bathrooms near by parking lot open from May-Oct. The course should be open year round as well. Course is closed around the 4th of July (4-5 days) for park festivities. Come check it out!
