Solid Mix of Open and Woods Park Golf

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What to Expect - Park style disc golf course that plays around several baseball fields, a beautiful small pond, a senior citizens center and through the woods surrounding the park.

Amenities - Multiple sports fields, a basketball court, playground for the kids, several shelter houses, modern bathrooms at the center of the sports complex and inside the senior citizens center when open. Beautiful small pond with a nice bridge and an aesthetically pleasing small fountain. Walking trail around the property.

Design - Short and moderately technical with a mix of elevation change, water hazards, moderately wooded in some areas and more open in others. Certainly recreational player level in design but outside of the water holes, novice players can certainly have a wonderful time here. More advanced players should look to shred the course. Distances range on the shorter side with technical lines and challenging OB on the wooded Par 3's to open longer slightly protected Par 3's.

Tees/Signage/Baskets - Concrete tee pads in pretty rough shape throughout, though this course is almost entirely local club funded and they have fixed a few and appear to be tackling improvement areas of concern as they go along and funds become available. Signage is basic and has all the relevant information but could certainly be improved as they are pretty much printed off sheets of paper slid into a protective plastic sleeve. Baskets were a mix of Discatcher and Prodigy, all in good shape, just mix matched.

Navigation - Pretty self explanatory and easy to follow even without U-Disc or a course map. You can normally see the next tee pad from the previous holes basket. There are a few blind baskets from the tee, Hole #5 that plays over the pond and down into the woods and Hole #6 that plays up the hill and over the pond are both Holes you will want to walk up and locate the basket and safe landing areas before you throw it the first time you play here.

Signatures - Hole #6 will get a lot of love as most memorable, due to the blind extremely uphill nature and the hidden pond at the top of the hill you have to clear to hit the green. While a daunting hole and certainly a strong talking point, it isn't as beautiful and positive memory provoking as Hole #16. A short downhill Ace Run if you dare Par 3 tucked into a small corner guarded by an OB walking path behind, a rocky slope wall where the pond juts out down the entire right side and connects with the walking path just a mere 10 feet to the back right of the basket. A beautiful bridge spans the pond next to the basket but shouldn't come into play, except to mess with your head while judging shape and distance. The left side is open and fair to land on, guarded only by a massive tree near the pin. Do you go pin seeking and risk throwing OB, or do you play it safe out to the left and run your death putt? While this hole is incredibly easy to Par, where's the fun in that?

Extras - Whitesville is a labor of love many years in the making. Going from a planned 18 hole course, to being stopped dead in its tracks after only 3 baskets were installed and the funding pulled by a new mayor. To being revived and club funded and turned into a unique 18 hole (now 21 hole) adventure where you get a bit of everything. While the Amenities are not top notch everywhere you look, they are improving every time I return. Oh, and there's a tank next to 18's green.

Cons:

Lost Disc Potential - There is a high chance of finding the water hazard on Holes 5,6,16, and 17 as three of these holes throw completely over the pond to baskets near the edge of the water. There is a property line fence on Hole #7 that can easily be thrown over and it is a no trespassing area.

Spacing - Multiple of the shorter holes are very close to each other, with tee pads near the common miss throw areas of the previous hole. There is also a walking trail that loops around the perimeter of the course that doesn't see a lot of use, but could pose a problem if in use.

No Chance to Air it Out - Most of the holes are short in the 200-250 range and lightly to moderately wooded, while there are a few 350-375 feet more open par 3's, there aren't any big long Par 4 or Par 5's to really let loose on and watch the disc fly. If that is something you desire, this isn't the course for you.

Tees/Signage/Baskets - Continually improving but there are some pretty unlevel and patchy tee pads out there still. Most short holes don't require much of a run up or even a run up at all so it is minor, but still can be considered a con to some.

Tight OB - The course is kinda squished in some small wooded areas early on the front 9. This takes advantage of the small amount of woods to create some nice lines but this also creates very small windows to land the disc in bounds. This can be frustrating if you hit a lot of trees or don't control your distance and groundplay well.

Other Thoughts:

Extremely fun course to play and score well at. Has multiple shot shapes required and several ace runs. The fact that the locals are putting so much continued effort into improving the course means the ceiling for this course continues to grow. As it sits currently, it is my 2nd favorite and recommended course in the Owensboro area right behind Yellow Creek Park. Not a destination course on its own, but certainly pairs well with Yellow Creek when in the area, or with Vastwood when coming from the East.
