Wickham-Woods - a good addition for this park!

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 11, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good, portable Chainstar baskets, most with PVC poles for visibility. Even though these are portables, all are anchored down pretty well.
Tees are a combination of turf and carpet, nailed down very well.
Good tee signs at both tees on every hole.
Most holes are heavily wooded, however for a new course, the fairways are cleared very well.

Cons:

The First tee is hidden with no signage showing where to start, especially tough in this very large, multi-use park.
Just a few benches, but the course is still new.
Could also use a few more Next Tee signs. Most were obvious, but a couple required checking the online map.
While the fairways have been cleared very well, there are still some toe trippers out there, so watch your step.

Other Thoughts:

Wickham Park already has a challenging 23 hole layout with several holes over 300'. They range from open, to lightly wooded. That is now the Main course.
The Woods course is primarily heavily wooded, with one water carry and two holes teeing into, or out of the woods. A good contrast with the Main course.
The majority of the fairways were cleared very well, in most cases providing a look at the basket from the tee, but often with some scattered trees in the way, to keep things interesting. While the majority of the holes are straight, there's enough variety thrown in to require every shot, the last two finish with left to right holes.
#4 is probably one of the toughest, more challenging holes, the fairway is down a cleared, sandy walking trail, with a large branch across the fairway (and more branches above it), probably 15' up and about 75' down the fairway. This requires a straight, low, fast drive to have a look at birdie on this 208'/300' hole.
Then after crossing a park road, #5 is a water carry to the basket set back a ways from the pond's edge. There are some shaggy bushes on both sides of the pond, putting a premium on drive placement.
#7 is also a good hole, a slightly elevated, open tee shot, into cleared woods, with just a few trees to avoid.
This course was opened in late 2022 and is already seeing a lot of rounds. The local club has started using it for some of their weeklys, since part of the Main course is closed for a Festival. This should help with getting the Woods broken in and a lot more playable.
