Multiple Wooded Layouts in Wine Cellar Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Three Heavily Wooded Layouts: This course has 29 baskets that give players two 18-hole courses and an option to play 9 holes only. Baskets are Innova Discatchers. The bright yellow bands are easy to see from a distance.

+ Challenging Course Design: The main elements that make up this course are technical woods and elevation. Several blind holes and par fours add to the challenge. There are also a couple short water carries.

+ Secluded Park Setting: This course is never crowded and the majority of holes are away from other popular areas in the park. The dense deciduous forest is especially beautiful in the fall and winter months.

+ Extra Amenities: Aside from the disc golf course this park also has a playground, a picnic shelter, restrooms, walking trails, and a lake that is a popular fishing spot.

+ Local Club: The Kanawha Valley Disc Golf Club hosts quality events. The Kanawha Valley Regional is among one of the biggest sanctioned tournaments in the state and boasts an excellent players pack along with fun and challenging courses. The club also hosts weekly leagues during the spring, summer, and fall. Random draw doubles rotates between the Kanawha County Courses is typically scheduled for Tuesday evenings. Doubles is a free league with an optional ace pot.

+ Location: Wine Cellar is minutes away from Charleston - the capital city of West Virginia. There are plenty of options for food, shopping, entertainment, and lodging nearby.

+ Proximity to Other Courses: Wine Cellar Park is close to the City Park which has a beginner-friendly nine-hole layout. It is also within 30 minutes of several quality courses including Valley Park, Redeemer, Coonskin, and Little Creek.

Cons:

- Tee Pads & Signage: All holes all have some sort of tee pad. The majority of these are concrete although some are paving stones and a couple are aluminum frames with grip tape. All of them provide adequate room for a run-up. Signs also have some variation in quality although all the holes are marked with accurate distances. Be sure to look for blue and yellow arrows to help direct you. I would recommend bringing a map or a local to help navigate the course.

- Course Conditions: This course can get overgrown (especially in the summer months). Some of the rough can be especially punishing if you get off the fairway. Beware of briers and poison ivy. Aside from the parking area there aren't many other chances to find a rest room, water spigot, or trash can in the park. Plan accordingly and pack out all that you pack in.

- Lost Discs: There is a real possibility of losing your discs here. The longer course plays around a lake and although there is only one water carry you could find the water on several holes. Due to some thick rough you will definitely search for discs at some point during your round. Keep an eye on your drives and use spotters on the blind holes to prevent lost plastic.

Other Thoughts:

Difficulty in Terrain: This course is not for beginners. There is no real break in the tight, technical nature of this course. The fairways are indeed fair but your will undoubtedly need to bring your scrambling game to help you get out of trouble in order to score well here. The elevation is also worth noting. Be prepared with plenty of water and a snack on your back. Leave the cart at home.

Multiple Layouts: The two 18-hole layouts share the same holes from #1 to #7. The 8th tee can be played to the left (for the longer and more challenging layout) or played to the right (for the shorter par 3 layout). Players can also still play the original nine hole layout by playing holes 1,2, & 3 before turning right and proceeding to #12 on the short course. Finish out the original nine-hole layout by playing #12 to #17.

Local Recommendations: If you need a quick warm up, check out the nearby City Park which has an easygoing nine holes you can knock out in a half hour or less. Be sure to get yourself a Tutor's Biscuit for breakfast or lunch. This local restaurant chain is a West Virginia institution. Also consider The Cold Spot for wings, salads, subs, and a great selection of draft beer.

Needs work, but fun. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course offers tight fairways, challenging elevation changes, and guarded hole positions. The course is short, so it can be played relatively quickly. But what it lacks in distance, it more than makes up for it in forcing shot shaping and touch shots. 18 is a cool finishing hole, across a creek and hidden by trees.

Cons:

Tee boxes are natural, they aren't level, and some aren't lined up with the fairway which doesn't make much sense. I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but it's kind of frustrating. Roll-aways are common and the course can feel cramped at times. Wish some of the holes brought the lake into play, to break up the wooded monotony.

Other Thoughts:

Since this is my home course and only two minutes from my house, I play it a lot and know it fairly well. Wish they had alternate hole positions to change the pace, and create some new challenges. The inclusion of long tees on more than two holes would also be a plus. Have to thank the KVDGC for creating all of these courses. The area has some real potential and I hope more people from out of town check out these courses in the Kanawha Valley.

No "Wineing" after playing this course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Details are laid out very well except for the tee signs.

As you enter the park, there are 2 signs. One pointing to the lake and the other to the
Disc Golf course ( to the left of the old abandoned Wine Cellars). Follow the sign and the blacktop path to another signpost saying hole #1. Follow that up the hill a little more and # 1's t will be there along with a bench.

Very steep course, but they have several benches dotted along the way so one can sit a spell.

Don't really need a map of the course as it's very well laid out.

Fast greens

Tight course

Innova baskets make location the basket much easier in this tight wooded course!

Did I say, attention to detail. Jim has a lot of rocks placed stratigically along the course. This work both makes it look more atractive, but also helps in the process to stop some errosion <applause, repeat>

# 3 is a heart beater as you through straight uphill with the basket at the plateau of the hill. Good flight lines, but miss them and you'll pay dearly as it a very steep slope when your off the fairway.

# 7 has a mando, As it protects # 8 tee box and it gives you a beautifull ACE run towards the basket. Go for it and go long, again a steep slope to transverse to the basket.

#9 (new version, to be completed by next week said Ben <co-designer, volenteer> is going to be sick. As one would throw down the very steep hill and then fade to the right and over a creek with the basket hiding behind a grove of trees <but the basket is just hiding from across the creek, there's plenty of room for putting once you get there).

Decent sized tee pads.

Cons:

Didn't have a a layout of the hole on the tee sign (but was told by designers that would be corrected).

No cement tees, but ground up black top surface (not really a con, but it depends on what your preferance is, I guess.

A very narrow road taking you to the park, Please becarefull as there a lot of younger kids playing about at the apartments as you start up the hill to the course.

smallish parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Meet the designers Ben, Jim and his son on hole # 6. I introduced myself and they then did the same. They asked me a couple personal questions about OB and mandos and I told them of my thoughts.

They told me that the new tees signs will have a more descriptive layout of the hole after future expansion (as they plan to add another 9 holes in the near future :)

I'm going to keep an extra eye on this course and come back after their next expansion phase is completed as from the work they done and what they we're talking about doing in the next phase, is going to make this course one of the better if not the best course to play in the Charleston area (IMO) Keep up the GREAT work people. I'm impressed-------------- - +
