Pros:
Wisconsin Lions Camp DGC is a fantastic new 18 hole course just northeast of Steven's Point. The course is seasonal and is closed at various times throughout the year for certain events. I'm not certain, but if it's like Standings Rocks, it'll probably be open from May through October. This is another Pete Hoover designed gem of a course that plays through some beautiful rolling hills with huge mature trees on every hole. There's some excellent views of the lake from numerous spots on the course as well.
The baskets here are really nice. I believe they're Mach V's. If not, some make very similar too them. These are all in great shape and catch nicely being brand new. I love the color combo on these too. Blue cage and yellow top with hole number plates all facing the tee. Much easier to spot in the shade than your typical silver colored Machs. No issues or complaints with these whatsoever. One basket and pin position per hole. Excellent.
The tees are rubber mats ala Standing Rocks. These are nicely sized and most importantly installed level and evenly. While not usually my favorite type of pad, these were all well done and in great shape being less than a year old. Good grip on a cool autimn afternoon. The soil seemed less sandy here compared to Standing Rocks too which is my main gripe with the pads there. There's a mix of single and dual tees throughout. Hole 5 even had three tees in play. I like the fact that when there's two or more tees it makes the hole play significantly harder from the longer ones. Again, excellent job with these.
There's a good mix of hole shapes out here and the elevation is used expertly to create some short but tough uphill holes that play longer than the distance would indicate. There's four par 4's out here with the rest being par 3. More experienced players will play the short tees as all par 3's I'd assume. The distances range from 135' up to 530' depending on the layout you're playing. Most fall into the 200-300' range though. Numerous blind pin placements off the tee due to the hills too, which is awesome for around these parts where most of the courses are on the flatter side.
The signage is top notch. Next tee signs all throughout the course. You will not get turned around here. I didn't use Udisc or the course map I got from the kiosk a single time in my two rounds out here today. The tee signs themselves are fantastic. Hole number, par, distances from either tee, a basic but effective and accurate hole map and even next tee arrows on these. There's even braille on the signs which I've never seen before I don't believe.
The flow of the course is really easy to follow, even without the numerous navigational cues. There's a practice basket before hole 1 and a nice kiosk with a map of the course, scorecards, maps and pencils. The course plays in what appeared to be a pretty much disc golf exclusive area too. There's restrooms located right next to the tee for hole 16, which the wife appreciated.
Cons:
The course, being on private property, is closed for different events at times. Be sure to call ahead before just showing up or check Udisc, Facebook, etc. Not a con for the course itself, but definitely limits it's availability. Beyond that it's a seasonal course so not available in the winter months.
P2P. While I have no problem paying $5/person to play here, $5/person PER round is a bit steep. I'm sure you could play two rounds for the fee and no one would bat an eye. It's a great course but that's pretty steep for most.
Pure speculation here on this one. I played it in mid October when the underbrush was all or mostly dead or dying off. It looks like the rough off the fairway in spots can be pretty thick and nasty in the summer. I've lived in this part of the state for almost 20 years so I'm probably right about this though. Lost disc potential is real out here.
The walk back to the lot from hole 18 is a little longer than normal. You do get to walk next to the lake for most of it so it's not even really a con but worth noting. Speaking of the lake, it's a shame that a hole or two couldn't have played closer to/along it.
Other Thoughts:
After seeing the pictures of this one I knew I needed to find a way to get out here. Man was I glad I did. Awesome course with all the bells and whistles. Great for a Lions Camp course but will appeal to almost all players. Fantastic addition to the area and will immediately make it into my rotation of courses in the general Point area.
I'd say this is a must play if you find yourself out this way. It's right off of hwy 66 which has you driving right past Yulga anyways, so yeah. Between the two you can't do a whole lot better than that. Certainly not in this part of the state. 3.75 rated if I could do that. Due too the limited availability and cost I'll err lower. The fun factor is a 4 all day though.
