Is this course for players or students?

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice Baskets
Some decent holes in the trash trees
A couple of interesting shots

Cons:

NOT A SAFE COURSE
Not marked very well although all the tee's were marked in different ways.
A lot of open holes

Other Thoughts:

Is this course suppose to be for school students or the community of disc golfers. That is the biggest question in my mind as I played this course.

Good thing this course is not playable when school is in session, because it would be best to play this course when no one is around the school. Hole 1 and 5 actually use parking spaces as tee's. I parked on tee pad one and moved when I realized it. I got lucky that the person parking on tee 5 left as I was playing.

The first 4 holes are on the north side of the school, there is a nice grove of trees that are used for holes 2 and 3 and sort of hole 4.

Hole 5 is a bad hole, not only are you teeing off from a parking spot, but you are throwing across the front yard of the school over the entrance. Turn over your shot and you are in the road or risk hitting the school. it's also the longest hole on the course.

Hole 6 is a fun little island hole with the road in front of the basket and a sidewalk behind the basket. it's a shorter hole, but a very small landing zone.

Holes 7, 8 and 9 follow the fence line on the south side of the property. Hole 8 has a giant hyzer shot, or an up the middle shot with some rough on the right side of the fairway. Actually a decent little hole. Hole 9 is a decent risk reward kind of shot with some thick brush behind the basket. There is a tempting big hyzer shot, but the tree's will probably block you.

Then you get into the interesting area with some holes carved out of junk tree's. Hole 10 is a little low turnover shot.

11 is an "S" shot around a couple of cedars into the open.

12 is a big hyzer from the top of a hill into the rough, it's a blind shot with a creek behind the basket (very small creek but did have some water in it)

13 is sort of similar to 12 but not as much of a hyzer. It's still blind and has a lot of this underbrush if you hyzer too much.

14 is a decent hole down a natural fairway, however a big hyzer shot would wind up in the main road.

Holes 15 and 16 throw back and forth though the cedar tree's. Nice fairways cleared out on these holes.

Same with 17 but the last approach to the basket is out in the open with a hill behind the basket if you overthrow.

Then you have hole 18. This is the craziest, most dangerous hole on the course. You are teeing off and can't see if there are cars or people on the road. Your shot is about 300ft over a small hill, across the parking/road and the green is between the road and the school on a hill. It's a fun shot if no one is around. Scarry if anyone is.

In general, play this course when no one is around and you might have fun. BUT this is a school, is the course not for kids? I do not feel like this course is kid friendly. But it is also not really challenging or interesting enough for any seasoned player.

Would I play here again? No, most of the course is boring and not worth it. The area has too many good courses to mess with this one. So don't worry if you don't play it, you didn't miss anything.

Pros:

18 baskets around the grounds of an affluent middle school. Plans in place to get tee signs and concrete tees, but the course is operable as-is. It keeps to itself around the school grounds, not impinging on the road or sidewalk besides currently teeing from the sidewalk on 2, and using it on the walk from 16 to 17.

Temporary signs are in the ground (political yard-sign type) with a rough map and distance. White MachV baskets on every hole are a nice upgrade from the standard school basket choices, and the next tee arrows on the bottom of each basket are a nice touch.

A school course with island holes? Yes. Hole 6 is a 175-ish foot putter upshot with a pretty small island to park, while hole 18 is a large island with some very steep slopes to land on. A few other unique holes, 2 has a double mando to keep you away from the road and hole 4's tee before following the land to the left downhill to a guarded green, 8 has a very tricky tree in the middle of its fairway, and 11 and 17 force sharp finishes after hitting a line through the woods.

Speaking of woods, this course has them. 10 starts off the show with a gap to enter the woods followed by a right finish, 11 and 17 I already mentioned, and the standout is 14: a 330ft shot with trees creating a low ceiling to hit about halfway down the tunnel, then another right finish around the final trees. It's the most well-designed hole on the property.

Cons:

The left-finishing holes in the woods are unfortunate. 12's basket is way down a hill in some thick woods; 13 is less deep into the woods, but a right-to-left flex line or a sky hyzer over the fence are the only options, hopefully this one changes with a concrete tee, and 16 requires a near-perfect line with an extremely gentle finish. I wouldn't harp on these holes so hard except that the rough on all of them is incredibly nasty and thorny. With such thin fairways you're quite the player to not end up in it at least once on the stretch of 10-16, and retrieving your disc is likely to be a bit painful. An unfortunate downside.

A few bland holes. Hole 1 is an open downhill shot with easy-to-avoid OB, 4 has nothing to it after beating the one tree off the tee, 7 has two simple trees, and 17 is a bit easy compared to the rest of the wooded holes.

The parking lot comes into play four times; on 4, 5, 6, and 18. They do tell you to stay away until school is over, but residual staff may still be around after the 4pm start time.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a fine course with not a ton going for or against it, and earns a middle of the road rating from me. It's a well done school course, but I don't think my rating will go up with concrete tees/signs, however I will go and re-evaluate when they get done. This is a fine little addition to a round at Prairie Center or Birdland, but not one I would go out of the way to be sure and stop at while passing through.
