Losing Majors

I've played two majors now and lost both by one stroke. One was on the last hole in the final 9, and the other was in a playoff. I'm attending my third major in a couple of weeks. Any advice?

The putts you miss early count just as much as the ones on your last few holes. Focus early like it's the Final 9.
 
Just keep getting after it! The fact that you were that close is a feat I don't know that I'll ever be able to accomplish.

That's a good point. I missed a 3 foot drop in putt in the second round this time because I was so hot and exhausted and dizzy, I couldn't see straight. Lost my early lead in the first round for the same reason.

One thing I've committed to do is really focus on physical fitness, especially running on the treadmill in the mornings instead of wasting time on facebook or dgcr. I just need more stamina. I think that will make a world of difference.
 
Carry some high energy snacks that won't lead to a crash. I carry trail mix and bananas when I caddie for my kids...I snack half way through a round will help pick them up and keep them focused. Also a 5 hour energy can help too.

It comes down to experience and that is what you are gaining. It's like birdie putts for noobs. The nerves for putting birdies is what causes most new players to gack it. It's the experience of putting at a lot of birdies that eventually becomes routine and you start making them.

The experience of being in a play-off or 1 stroke ahead or behind towards the end of a tourney will give you the confidence to just play and not be distracted by the circumstances.

All you can do is your best, and if you can keep calm and keep in the game when others around you are not then you will have the advantage.

You can't control what your opponent does but you can apply pressure on them by keeping calm and playing at a top level.

Seriously, though, just figure out the couple of holes or situations that you are giving up shots and try to focus on playing those better.

I've played against a lot of guys that really lose their cool and just go to pot. Don't do that. :D

I'm amazed at how few people take overall fitness seriously. I know disc golf is a pretty "chill" sport, and it's one of the reasons I love it, but I saw how better physical fitness helps while playing my very first tourney. By the end of the second round I still felt pretty good, like I could play another round even, but the other dudes on my card were dragging something awful. I went from 1 stroke down at the break to winning by 6.

I run 2 or 3 times a week, play disc golf a couple times a week, try to ride my bicycles (mountain and road) as much as possible (sometimes to and from work). I do my best to eat pretty healthy and just stay in good overall shape.

Gotta eat right on the course too. I stick with granola bars, dried fruits, clif/power bars, sport beans, and other sport/endurance foods.
 
go to the dollar store buy a tiny spray water bottle splash your neck and face before key shots if your hot, will trick your brain into remembering muscle memory to perform certain shots and not crap the bag.
 
Consider some type of electrolyte and carb drink like Cytomax, drinking water only solves part of the equation, replenishing electrolytes helps keep you from getting stiff, etc. on the long tournament rounds, especially in those hot climates like Texas, etc.

Yep. I always have a fresh 32oz bottle of water and a 32oz gatorade for each round. I've seen guys walk into the second round of a tourney with nothing more than the soda that they left the fast food place with from lunch. :doh:

In hot conditions Gatorade or even worse powerade aren't good for you. In my hot weather fire and rescue classes we were taught to dilute a 32 ounce half and half with water. Powered Gatorade is also much better for you.

Sucks that you lost by one shot. But unless you put up a 10 on a hole in the final it wasn't the final that cost you. It was those ****ty shots earlier in the tourney. Like someone else said focus like the final the whole way through. That one shot loss will be a 4 shot lead.

Exactly why I carry water AND gatorade.

Check the US Masters from this past weekend. I played advanced masters women. They have my name listed first right now, like I won, for some reason. I'm sure they'll fix it though.
