Discraft/Disney Star Wars franchise partnership.

Obligatory:

This makes me sad. I love Discraft, but I absolutely LOATHE Disney. I broke up with Star Wars because of them. I really don't want to quit Discraft.

The original Star Wars was one of the first movies I ever saw in a theater so it holds a special place in my heart.

That said, this does little for me. I felt the same way about DD and Marvel.

I would rather see companies invest in developing their own creative.

I hear ya. Not really my thing either, but I think it will help bring attention to the sport from people who might otherwise never bother. In terms of helping grow the sport, I think it's a good move.

On one of the Disc Golf Answer Man pods, a caller asked if DD would license Star Wars after having gotten Marvel. If I remember correctly, EMac basically said, "That would be awesome, and we asked, but Star Wars is MUCH more expensive. It's not possible." If that's true, this is a huge flex from Discraft. Combined with McBeth, they are going in.

That probably makes sense. I have heard numbers on what it cost DD, and I know the Star Wars figures, and if the DD numbers are accurate then Star Wars is definitely more expensive. I believe DD inked that Marvel deal several years ago, before Marvel really exploded (Black Panther, Infinity War, etc). I imagine a Marvel deal would be even more expensive now, but still not at the Star Wars level. Star Wars is probably the most successful movie franchise of all time. If LOTR did another successful trilogy you could argue that an LOTR deal could be cool for a company to investigate as well.

How long til Millenium makes a Falcon? Rename the Scorpius, and the Millennium Falcon and Star Destroyer could be interchangeable.

...and Mrs. GoobyPls has already asked Santa Claus to bring her a Chewbacca Buzzz. *sigh*

Mrs. GoobyPls sounds like she'd be fun to play with!

Good news! You don't have to buy one of those discs!

Not sure I'd call it a good move. I equate it Star Wars in general. People who didn't know what a Jawa is a few years back suddenly started quoting the movies and buying all sorts of Star Wars crap once Disney took over. Posers.
Or you can look at it like the sourdough bacon cheeseburger at Carl's Jr. Used to be a decent sandwich. Then they started advertising for it and pushing it on the masses. After that it became a poorly slapped together pile of dung.
There is a difference between growing and peddling.

From a business perspective this makes sense, targeting the younger crowds, or the sci fi junkies. I love star wars, but my love for the clean stock Discraft stamp is greater for disc golf.

I don't think it makes sense. The increase in cost goes straight to the consumer and the money is going straight to the 3rd party for license rights. Doesn't help disc golf at all. They would be better served my releasing more speciality runs where the increase in cost goes straight into their pockets.

Now I think they will sell some discs but I don't expect to see them run very long. Probably just a cash grab from the limited nature of the discs and the initial appeal.

I agree with you 100% here howevvvveeeerrr, they look dope!

Chewbacca disc = camouflage disc. That's the really smart business decision.

It helps the sport gain notoriety. More people will learn about the sport, watch the events, buy other products and from different companies. Even if those discs won't necessarily equal bank right away, it will still help in the long run.

I started playing disc golf because my brother had a DG video game we loved. Similar scenario. But now I've invested a lot into the sport and have spread the word to many others who have also invested time, money, and recruiting others.

It's a domino effect, and sometimes you need something like Star Wars to give you a push.

Awww this is so lame. Just hotstamp movie stuff on the low low like Gateway . Waste of money. Usually when they do full foil stamps they arent good throwers. Plus, it takes the price of a esp force (14$ shipped) to like $20+.

Hopefully mcbeth will bag one of these lame discs so discraft can actually get some return on their investment.

I said my peace. Anyone who disagrees is wrong

I honestly don't think this will grow the sport by the way of casuals taking more of an interest, just because a frisbee has a cool stamp they recognize.

If non-DG people buy them, and that eventually gets those folks to take up disc golf, and buy stock stamp discs does it make sense then?

Held a Full Foil Buzzz just see what one felt like. Would never consider throwing a disc like this. At least the DecoDyes on the Trilogy discs don't seem to have an effect. But the Buzzz was slippery as hell.
