Should PDGA change MPO to MPD?

Divisions could be renamed to almost anything. Though I don't care for the ideas that are borne out of trying to protect someone's feelings. Whatever you name them, someone is not going to like it. The whole idea falls into the "it ain't broken" category for me.

catering to people's feelings isn't always a bad thing. if it increases participation and promotes playing one's proper division, that's a win and it's better for the rest of the community.

Break it out like reading level groups in elementary school. There's the gold group, the silver group, the red group, and the brown group. . .

And again, this is all because of the false dichotomy of taking cash vs. not taking cash. Why not let all divisions play for any prizes they want, and base the splits on skill, age, and sex?

Yeah, I've wondered what the actual value is of having the pro/am distinction.

What would happen to MA1? Cap it at 970?

Now that the PDGA has instituted a Ratings Minimum For Open Division At PDGA Majors, Elite Series In 2020 should they also change the name from MPO to Men's Pro Division or something else since it is no longer a truly open division?

https://www.pdga.com/announcements/ratings-minimum-established-open-division-pdga-majors-elite-series-2020

Change the name of the division because of 20 events? What about the other 4000 events?

National Tour events have no rating yet right?

this is just for Majors and Pro Tour right?

Something like that. I'd want to look at some numbers before setting a specific rating. Maybe where a 950 rated player would have a 50/50 shot at cashing in a big event.

Perhaps it wouldn't even be capped, just offer smaller prizes.

It would just be a step below MPO for players who are willing to admit they can't hang with the best, yet still need their fix of a chance at a cash prize, but can't use age or sex to get closer competition.

Of course, but I see it nothing but a slippery slope. In today's "woke" world, seems everything is an affront to someone.

As far as the value of the pro am distinction, disc manufacturers want to get disc golf in schools, colleges, the olympics, etc. Even now, kids need to be able to maintain amateur status and not lose out on a full ride to college or a trip to the olympics because they cashed at a disc golf tournament.

If we are talking about renaming divisions, I feel very strongly that Novice should be renamed Casual. Novice sounds degrading to someone who has played for a couple of years even if they are still only 820 rated. Simply changing the name will significantly increase participation in that division and will improve the spread of players throughout all divisions.

Casual can be perceived as one not taking the game seriously, I find this offensive.

I am color blind, I find using colors offensive.

I hadn't thought of this angle, so I've read up a bit. You're right that collegiate sports (in the US) have to be amateur. But, and I didn't know this myself, the Olympics have allowed professionals since 1986! Boxing and wrestling held out for a bit and wouldn't allow pros to compete in the Olympics, but boxing caved in 2016.

Interesting article about the change.

I did but it never says a thing about the Pro Tour or National Tour, just Majors. I thought the Pro Tour has a qualifying of 900 or 920 or something close to those numbers, as I thought I had seen that in its own thread. I do say for just those events maybe have name of open dropped but I say no, and someday the possibility of having the amateur and pro divisions at events Like Majors open to all who qualify including amateurs that can qualify for the events and pro's who can qualify for amateur events.

It's 4 sentences long. The information isn't hidden.

"...will be in effect at PDGA Majors with an Open field (PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, European Open, United States Disc Golf Championship) and all PDGA National Tour and Disc Golf Pro Tour events."
