Struggling with putting

Hello guys and gals,
So the purpose of this post is to hopefully get some help with my struggles. So here's a little background, i am a 36 yr old man im 6'1 about 180 lbs. I am an amatuer currently playing in MA4 and was dabbling my feet into MA3 the last month. This is my first year playing disc golf. my rating is currently at 762, my drives are consistently hitting 350-400. so up until about a week or two ago my putting had been pretty good but im always looking to improve. i know that i had changed my grip by sliding my pointer finger down from the side of the rim of the disc to just under, the purpose was to get a better flight out of my putter so its not as wobbly and to hopefully generate more power being outside of 25 30 ft i struggle with putting the disc in the basket with some force and falling short. so do i go back to my finger on the side of the rim and try to get more power and distance some other way? or do i continue to work through the crappy putting until it starts improving???

Throwing 375 and putting pretty well......rated 765??

Biscoe is correct. The outside finger generally lends itself to better control and accuracy. Putting is about practice....put in the time and reap the reward. 🔥

MIght watch Wysocki's youtube video on putting. He uses his body to get power into his throw. You need power and accuracy.

Ok guys thanks I love the suggestions. Yea so I just started playing 5 months ago, and when I started playing I got my pdga number and was horrible. My first ever rating was 713 then 728 I believe then this month it jumped to 763. Most my rounds from this month were rated over 820 with more than a couple over 850. I have been playing MA4 until this past month when I've had an explosion of improvements. The rounds that killed my rating from going over 800 was the last 3 rounds where my putting has been absolutely garbage. @ru4por so those rounds killed me from getting more than a 38 point jump. Plus the area where I'm from its so hard to get a 1000 rated round like a pretty easy shorter course you have to score over -10 to get over 1000

I got a basket and get 100-200 reps in a day. I also think I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was wrapping if that makes sense around the disc like a regular Frisbee. No5 I keep my wrist pushed forward figured on bottom with modified fan grip towards the front of the disc and it's working. So hopefully this is the turning point

What kind of putting are you doing - spin, or push? Personally, I spin putt, and I can't imagine putting accurately if I don't keep my pointer finger on the rim. But, I normally start my spin putt at about my upper abdominal/lower chest area, and that works for me out to about 25-30'. I messed a little with trying to start near my lower left leg, but did not like that. So, now when I am at or past 30', I switch my stance to slightly more turned, and I start my putt at my left (now rear) shoulder to get the added power I need. Then I have no issues with getting enough power - it is just about trying to get the right amount, to give myself the best chance to get makes, with the least chance of bad blow past shots leaving me a long come back. Also, not sure what your accuracy level is. I am also playing 5 months, not driving nearly as far as you are, but putting, in practice, I average 35-40% from 30', and trying to get that consistently over 50%. At 20', I average 70%, and at 50', only 10%. Also, for me, spin putting, a lot of my power comes from wrist flick/spin, which also allows me to use enough power to reach the basket, but still not blow past too badly. But, the wrist flick/spin is also the area that maybe causes me the most struggle to be consistent every putt, meaning if I miss bad left or right, it is because I had a combination of too much or little wrist flick, and/or that combined with releasing too early or late. My putting was improving fast until near this level, and now gains come very slowly - kind of at a plateau, I guess.

Oh, also, what putter are you using? I have found that I don't like a 'floaty' putter, but I do like one that gets easy distance. Been using Fierce, switching to Jawbreaker Banger-GT if windy, but just started messing with Zero Pures, and liking them so far. Depending on what you are putting with, a putter that gets you more distance more easily might help? I liked the Aviar for a while, but got away from it because I either came up short a lot, or had to throw it too hard, which hurt my accuracy.

These 2 videos really helped me. If you don't have time to watch them all the way through my main take-aways were

1. Line your spine up with the pole
2. Keep your release point between your shoulders
3. Raise your back foot the same time you release the disc.

The third point may not apply if you're a straddle putter. The Trash Panda video is where I got the idea from so he can explain it much better.

I have seen the Philo video before. So long, with only a few critical things - I can not sit through it again. The second video - very interesting. Short, to the point - in my words, he shares a bunch of different peoples' single favorite tips. Very good! Several good tips here, that we can all try out for ourselves. I am going to try some of them out today, starting…. Now!

I already know for me, aiming at a specific link, making sure I cock and flick my wrist, and getting a comfortable stance, then rocking and leaning forward with my putt (like the last tip, your leg going back and arm forward at the same time) are all keys for me. When I focus on all three, I putt much better. When I forget any of them, I struggle.

Oh, two tips for correcting frequent low hits. First, if you aim for a specific link (which is my single biggest thing), raise the link you are aiming for. Second - I think Sheep says this, and I have not verified myself because low misses is not my issue - raise your chin up higher when you aim/putt. See if either of those help. Good luck!

1) When I start leaving putts short, I often find that I'm leaning forward. I think about standing up straighter, but the chin advice is probably better and accomplishes the same thing.

2) Consider making power with your legs. Chris Dickerson is a good person to watch to learn this.

Everybody got their favorite videos but this is one of mine that really helped in many ways (the tip about putting on a slope alone saved me many strokes):

That and tossing the disc vertically up, catch and repeat really helped me to learn to put spin on the disc. If you are struggling short it might be you are not spinning enough or shifting weights.

Maybe I just actually make the "suck less at putting" series
And just drop all the truth bombs and show people how to build a putt?

I'd have to do it in like 4 sections, cause nobody gonna watch a video of me talking for 20 minutes to get better.

What "truth bombs" differs from the 195828194 other videos that "coaches", pro players and other peoples already made?

Did you find the holy grail?

Or is it the dunning Kruger effect blasting through today?

(Friendly banter, please don't kill me)

I was speaking in general. haha.

But practice putting isn't very hard. people just make it way harder than necessary.

I do think that the mental game is a HUGE part of it tbh. Along with body alignment (??) And having a consistent movement. I actually like putting in general, even though I might miss a decent amount, the "thrill" of draining a C2 putt always gets me hyped. I just can't be arsed practicing lol

I find it far easier to pop into a "putting" mindset than a "playing golf" mindset.

But I have turned putting and how I teach putting into pure routine, while the throw as a whole is not something that can be turned into that sort of motion. So, I find putting easy, and easy to teach when I teach it the way that I do.

People scoff at how I teach to practice putt, but.. Sorry. It works.
