A little work and could be a 4 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Holes 2-3 need some great control
Makes you use different shots
can be windy--Forces control
bright blue poles that can be seen
THe views
port a potty on site

Cons:

can be windy--might lose a disc like my brother did
needs a course map
hard to find
lost a disc
poor signage

Other Thoughts:

With some signs this could be a great course. It is located in a great park that is dog friendly.
Personally i dont mind dirt pads but if you do you may not like this course as they are all dirt and can be a little rocky.

Nice location & layout, tough tees & 'baskets' 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Technical & challenging; good mix of short, long, uphill, downhill.
- Nice scenery

Cons:

- Not marked well
- Dirt/rocky tees
- Poles, instead of baskets
- Rocky course beats up discs

Other Thoughts:

- It appears this course is one that's there by the graces of Parks Dept./City, and it's not intended to be 'permanent.' I hope the locals are successful at improving the facilities (concrete pads, baskets, etc.), while mollifying/convincing the non-golf crowd.

- If you've got a dog, watch out for Park Ranger. We had ours off-leash & got a warning re leash.

Great Views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Amazing views of the Valley and City of Chico.

Very challenging holes and terrain with a great mix of trees and shrubs and changes in elevation.

Benches at various holes.

Very clean.

Cons:

Course not marked well.

Strong potential for losing discs on two of the holes as the edge right up against the gorge of the park.

Tee pads can be challenging and make for tough drives.

Long Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 18, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is long, but not too difficult. It has a few signature holes that we refer to as "the cliff holes." Those holes have some really nice views of Chico and the Buttes.

Cons:

No trash cans, no tee pads, no baskets (poles), spray painted signage, limited benches, A little boring after the cliff holes. I think the shorter course is more fun, but the cliff holes are awesome.

Other Thoughts:

I usually play the front 9 of the short course to warm up, walk down from the #10 tee to the longer course and start on hole #2. Play 2-18. Start again on #1 of the long course. After finishing #1 on the long course, walk back up and play #10-18 on the short course. It's never very crowded, so this can usually be accomidated.

The Chico courses are super rocky and will eat up your discs. If you really care about your discs, I would suggest you bring some old ones.

So Much Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2004 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Bidwell Park - Long is located in Chico, CA and is a dry desert like course. The land is hot and shade is few and far between, especially during the hot summer months. The course design provides a lot of challenges that require long powerful drives, tight fairway shots, and short accurate up shots which usually is affected by the harsh wind. Holes #2 and #3 are unbelievable, with a very steep cliff to the right that is unforgiving. With bushes and trees scattered periodically throughout the course, it is essential to bring lots of water and sunscreen. During the spring time, the course is beautiful and at its best!

Besides visiting the Sierra Nevada Brewery in
Chico, this course is worth a game if in the area. If pressed for time however, I recommend playing the long course only. The other course is more like a pitch and putt compared to it's big brother course.

Cons:

At the time there were only targets which we all know is never as good as the real thing. The tee pads were dirt like the course but were not always level, and rather bumpy making footing tricky at times. During the wetter part of the year, the course can also get quite muddy.

However, I have been told that the local club has been working hard to fix most of the issues, and were trying to eventually put in baskets which would make the course rate higher.

Other Thoughts:

Bidwell - Long is challenging and fun, but without the infamous cliff shots of holes #2 and #3, not nearly as impressive as many of the holes seem somewhat redundant.

The locals are friendly however, and are always helpful in showing you around. The course can be difficult to naviagate so make sure you print off a map or find a local when playing. Enjoy!
