Hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Concrete Tees and Discatchers. Both are great and work just as they should.

+ Plenty of parking. The park seemed like it was in a sketchy area but I had no problems.

+ Good mix of short easy par 3's, longer harder par 3's and a few par 4's. This course is on the playable side for a lot of skill levels.

+ Woods golf that isn't too wooded or too open. I enjoyed that this course has very fair fairways that still will challenge you. I enjoy a course like this that has multiple ways to complete the hole, it makes it great for all playing styles.

+ Navigation was pretty simple. You pretty much complete the hole and then just look around for a white PVC pipe and head that way. Chances are its the right way.

+ Teesigns were unique and nice. I have never seen teesigns done the way they were done here. They are just 6"? PVC pipe in the ground with a sticker on it with all the relevant info needed for a teesign.

+ Hole 18 is a great finishing hole. Its not too long or difficult but its a great water carry on to a pseudo island, its a nice little peninsula. Its a great way to finish the round.

+ You have to use a good mix of BH and FH shots to complete this course well. It plays a bit easier for the RHBH than the RHFH but I think this course plays very fair for all throwing types.

+ There is another parking lot around hole 9 that you could use and play the course from there if it does get super busy.

Cons:

- Hole 1 was a bit confusing to start out on but it's manageable. The teepad just seemed to be a reused concrete slab. There is no problem there, it's just a little odd.

- I could see some people having issues with how close OB can get on some holes. There is a creek that runs thru part of the course and the course uses it nicely. Makes for some fun holes.

- Light Posts. There were two holes that had Light Posts in the middle of the fairway. They are basically trees, but they can eat up discs a bit quicker and they just seem out of place.

- There were more pedestrians around than normal. I think I ran into 3 different groups of people just walking thru the fairways enjoying the park for what it is. Just be patient and you will be fine.

- Fake bathrooms? There are these bathroom looking shacks around the park that may or may not be bathrooms. They were all locked so I couldn't tell for sure what they were but they will fake you out and get you excited that there is a bathroom only to find that it is locked.

- The walk from 10 to 11 is a bit long. Without uDisc, you will get lost trying to find hole 11. This is a nonissue after you have played the course once but there is nothing that I saw that would help you navigate this.

Other Thoughts:

I thought this course was a hidden gem. I didn't have any crazy expectations of this course but it surpassed what I thought it would be. I just thought this was going to be an easy going park course and it definitely was but the design was much better than I thought it was going to be. The holes were very playable and fun to play. If I lived in the area I would be playing this course all the time. Its a fun course that I would be constantly pushing myself to lower and lower scores. This is the kind of course that you could shoot -18 on and have it feel like you accomplished something. Its not a little pitch-n-putt, it has some baby teeth to it. You have to use a lot of different shots to be able to complete this course well. I would say that its maybe a bit more friendly to the RHBH but I used a fair bit of backhands and forehands.

You do not need to travel out of the way to come play this course but if you are in the area or need a rest stop then it is a great option. I would definitely play this course again

really nice! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

I G Levy Park is a great community area with two parking lots and developed areas, and a natural area between two neighborhoods connecting each park entrance with a gravel walkway/bike path. The disc golf course starts in the northern area of the park, plays through the woods area, around the southern area, then back through the woods in the middle, and back up to the pond in the northern area.

The course design is great. There doesn't seem to be a lot to work with here, but whoever designed this made the most of what they had, and seems to have a good understanding of the game. I know it says the course was built in 2003, but it's obviously been updated since then with new equipment, maps, tee pads, and I'm guessing a redesign at some point.

Concrete tee pads are a good size given that some of these holes are pretty long. The baskets are in good condition.

The length of the holes is a little long for new players, and even some 'tweeners (a couple 400', and a 500' par 3). I managed to shoot even par, maybe 1 over after a couple bad holes (it was windy ok?), and my friend shot like 30 something over par. Still though, I really enjoyed the shape of the fairways, use of the creek on several holes and the lake on hole 18.

Cons:

It gets a little close to out of bounds parking lot/apartment building on a couple holes. It is kind of inevitable though with the tight space.

Navigation is pretty straight forward, but very hard to get started. There's no sign on hole one, and the teepad is kind of oddly proportioned for a disc golf tee. But the map is fairly accurate on placement. This app seems a little off on distances. The tee's gave some different distances than the dgcr scoring app, and it was hard to tell which was more accurate.

The signs were on small pvc pipe posts, and could be hard to read, but very well detailed if you need to find the basket

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course. It was cold and a little muddy when I was there, but if it were dry and comfortable, it would be a great local course. It plays near but not too dangerously close to some other park amenities. Frankly I was very surprised it wasn't crowded on a sunny saturday because I would love to play this course more often

Pascagoula - worth a stop 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Free to play

-Nice, well maintained park, not hard to find. There's a restroom at both North & South. There are also occasional garbage cans and benches along the course. IG Levy North is also a bird sanctuary, I saw a group of at least a dozen canadian geese on the soccer field and tons of muscovy ducks.

- Variety of long bombers, ace runs and in-betweens. Some open shots, some wooded, plus a couple water hazards.

- Signage is in pretty decent condition, Tee signs are small white pvc posts about 18-24" tall. Most baskets have "Next basket" sign w/ arrow.

Cons:

- Lack of elevation - maybe a couple hanging baskets could fix this?

- Drainage/No bagholders - not a big deal but on a soggy day like yesterday they would have been nice, at least on drives. That being said some of the tees also get flooded out.

- I can see how proximity to things like the soccer field and skate park possibly could render some holes unplayable to some players.

- There are some navigation issues (see below)

Other Thoughts:

- Natural tees.

- The previous two reviews are still pretty much valid and worth a read. I played on a chilly, soggy day w/ not a lot of people at the park. I only saw three other golfers the whole time and they were starting as I was finishing. I think Pascagoula has got a pretty decent course going on here - I've seen worse layouts on better grounds. The map, while not to scale, was very helpful though I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have too many issues w/o it except on the following holes: - (as stated before) the basket for 9 is near the skate park; to get to tee 10 you have to double-back almost to 8's basket near the park entrance. Here it gets confusing- from what I've read this may be an old issue but for newcomers: the basket for 15 is marked 14, 14 is marked 13, and 13 is just missing. This results in the basket for 14 being marked 13 yet pointing you to 15 - it's a little confusing to a first-timer, I'm sure locals know what's up. If you have the map you'll find a hole in the ground where the basket for 13 should be.

- Despite these issues I'd play here again - I've yet to play Shepard State Park in Gautier but I did personally enjoy this course more than Bulldog Bayou. If I were a local I'd be pretty happy.

Recent upgrades a big help! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Recently installed, PVC filled with concrete, Tee Markers on every hole, makes it much easier to navigate without a map.

'Next Tee' arrows hanging under every basket to direct you to the next tee. (edit: there are no "next tee" markers anymore)

Course starts and finishes near the Scranton Nature Center, scorecards available inside Nature Center.

Restrooms at both ends of park. Trash cans throughout park as well as recycle bins.

Cons:

Fairly long walk back from 9's basket to 10's tee.
I usually play hole 10 before hole 9, since hole 11 is directly across the parking lot from 9's basket, near the corner of the tennis courts.

(edit: They fixed this problem by renumbering 9 and 10. More intuitive than the old layout.)

Other Thoughts:

This is a great little course that requires a fair amount of control, but not a massive arm.
Variety of shots required.
Hole 1 and 16 give you the opportunity to "air it out". Hole 5 hard left turn with trees on your left and the creek on your right.
Hole 8 has two fairways through the trees for RHBH or LHBH.

A few places to lose a disc, over the fence of the Naval installation along hole 10, or possibly in the creek that cuts through the park by holes 5, 6, and 7. The creek is usually pretty shallow unless it has rained recently.
Holes 17 and 18 play over water but are easily manageable.

Drove My Wraith Into The Levy, And The Levy Wasn’t Dry 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variable tightness.

Cons:

Quite flat. Single, natural tee locations; single basket positions. Backtrack from basket-9 to tee-10.

Walking paths, playing fields, and recreational areas are quite near a majority of the holes.

While navigation wasn't overly difficult, the course I played December 2012 was a bit different than the October 2007 map. The first twelve holes seem to be as described by the map, then:
- new hole-13 is a short right-turner, basket near the levy, tee in the opening leading to the housing area
- new hole-14 is old hole-13; new hole-15 is old hole-14
- new hole-16 is most of old hole-15, but is shorter, and does NOT cross the water
- new hole-17 has a tee near the restroom, and is a short toss across the water, to old basket-16 (or so it appears to be)
- new hole-18 is old hole-18, so essentially old hole-17 has been eliminated

Other Thoughts:

Course is set upon an odd-shaped (backward-Z) piece of land in a public park, bordered by roads, housing areas, and Navy property (high fence paralleling the right-side of fairway-10 - farewell to your disc if it goes over). The land is perfectly flat, but does contain some large, scattered pockets of trees, and some water hazards.

Roughly half the holes offer some mid-fairway and/or near-basket scattered trees to avoid, about one-third of the holes are open in their (near) entirety, allowing your disc plenty of leeway, and the few remaining holes have multiple trees defining a throwing path throughout their duration. The majority of the holes simply call for straight shots - only a handful of holes require any type of left/right from the tee. Holes range from ~200' to ~500', with an average of ~300'.

Favourite hole: #5, a steady left turner, just under 300'. Trees on the left prevent the disc from going too high, or left too early, while the levy along the right-side awaits any disc that doesn't turn enough.

Worth a play if passing nearby, but not worth a major detour.

Fun and challenging course. Good mix and variety of shots. Fairly well designed and layed out through the park. The local club was working on remaking some of the tee markers.

Cons:

Needs concrete tee pads and hole signs.

Good Local Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It has a great mix of long and short holes, and great use of a creek and the pond. Lots of different wholes and is a great place for beginners and experts alike. The course is beautiful in the spring and summer and the foliage is thick and in the fall and winter is open.

Cons:

Tee pads are natural and many are very uneven. Signs for the wholes are always broken or non existent and the baskets are only single chained. Some of the tress and growth get in the way of the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

It would be nice to see a course map at the park and scorecards.

Good potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful park with lots of shade.
- Variety of holes for different skills
- Nice park & playground on site for family
- Good use of water on several holes

Cons:

- Poor identification of tee's
- No on-site map
- Often difficult to locate the next hole
- One hole is a little close to children playing

Other Thoughts:

With little work, this could be a very good course! If you go, make sure to print out and take the map listed under the files/links tab above. Without it or someone who knows the course, you will likely spend half your time trying to find the next tee.

Not the greatest 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

A somewhat decent variety of holes.

Cons:

1)There is no course map that I know of (and no one in the nature center to even give me a map if there were one)
2)Many of the tees have multiple numbers written on them.
3)The course starts from a back entrance to the park rather than the front
4)Several holes are too close to a playground for comfort
5)not enough long open shots
6)if there has been any rain then several holes turn into marshland

Other Thoughts:

It took around an hour or more for me and the guys I was playing with to figure out the course layout. Many of the "tees" were just small flags stuck in the ground that will soon wash away. The only real plus to this course is that it is free. The Shepard State Park course only a few minutes from this one is much better laid out (especially during winter when brush isn't a problem) and more peaceful.

Revamped 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has a good balance of shots including straights, hyzers and anhyzers. It's a tight, technical course for the most part, but it does have a few holes to grip it and rip it big. It has some beautiful fairways like 5 and 6 that throw alongside water. The park is in a safe area and has restrooms on site. Most of the complaints about this place have to do with the course not having all 18 holes. I just finished a round and all 18 baskets are up and include tee boxes. Baskets 15-18 are brand new.

Cons:

The course is still missing solid tee pads and signs. There were flags up, but those won't last very long before they are gone making it difficult for newcomers. You MUST print the map from the "links" tab or pick one up inside the nature center during business hours.

Other Thoughts:

The course has some negative reviews from people, but I enjoyed playing here and will do it again when I travel this way. If you go during the right times, you can avoid high traffic from kids playing and soccer games.

What a Waste 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I absolutely loved the first 14 holes. This course is in a neighborhood atmosphere, so there is plenty of space and you don't have to worry too much about getting stuck in deep woods. Good variety of dofg lefts and dog rights. Some wide open distance holes, and short precision. I loved the grassy fairways, the holes that played along the creek, and the nice walking paths that surround most of the park. with a map this course was verry easy to navigate.

Cons:

ONLY 14 BASKETS!!! It looks as if the city took out baskets 15-18. What a shame. Tee's were difficult to find, without a map this course is impossible to play. Because it navigates through a park there were lots of kids running around. Nobody got in my way, but it could happen.

Other Thoughts:

This course had so much potential until the disheartining realization that the city destroyed the last 4 holes for reasons I'm not sure of. The 1st 14 holes are fabulouse, but the last four no longer exist. It's a shame because this could have easily been my favorite in the area. If you have the chance I recommend playing it. I still think it's better than Shepard State Park, but the absence of the last 4 holes is devistating.

Well... at leaste it's FREE! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

FREE!!! Had some interesting holes. Did I mention it was FREE... I have a hard time blasting this course for it's down falls when it is free. But all and all the course could be very nice and probably was at one time. "Most" of the Holes are marked with the number, but few of the Tees are marked.

Cons:

Construction took out 5 of the holes. # 1 is missing... not sure why, but when you get there and you can't find # 1 it can be a hard time getting started. So if you want to play # 1 I suggest throwing from near the restrooms to Hole # 14 clear across the soccer fields. then you'll be near Tee # 2. at this point you can pretty much follow the map (YOU WILL NEED A MAP) the tees are not well marked and were different numbers at one time. Vandalism and poor upkeep have made the tees hard to find and or read.
There are a lot of people walking through this course so be careful.
There is an incredible playground here, but it puts children to close to play on hole # 5. Holes 15 - 18 are gone because of the construction.
There is basket near tee 13 and hole 12 that is not on the map... no idea what that was for, but we threw from behind Hole 12 to it.

Other Thoughts:

Print the High Resolution Map from the links/files part of this course review so that you will have one. We were lucky enough to find one. There is a score card on the other side of the map, but since the majority of the distances are incorrect I didn't scan it for this site. Also the map/scorecard is about 5" by 11" so it's kind of bulky. But I say again YOU WILL NEED A MAP!!!
I was so displeased with this course that I ended up going to Shepard State park again (only 7 miles away) and didn't take any pictures of IG Levy. I doubt I'll ever go back. I'd only play it if I lived next to it.
Lastly... I really do believe that this course at one time was easily a 3.0 - 3.5, but now it's just sad.
To the people who run this park... please fix up the holes that are still playable with some markers, arrows, updated distances etc...

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great layout. A few holes are a bit challenging due to trees, but overall a good day on the greens. Water hazards on four holes and construction closes three, but alternate tees make up the difference.

Cons:

The tree hazards on five holes are a bit to deal with but you can easily deal with them if you go for accuracy instead of distance.

Other Thoughts:

I'm kinda biased because it's my home course, but it is worth the walk...
