Nice park course with great river views

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Plenty of parking lets you start in multiple locations

#1 tee and 18 green are close together. No really long walks between holes

Both the short (Green) and long (Orange) courses are pleasant and playable for the average mortal

Only real risk of a lost disc is in the creek and that was nearly dry.

Lots of strategic shots curving in both directions

Some fun elevation changes

Cons:

The tee pads are level but they are kind of showing some wear. They are turf on wooden frames . Because the course is sort of set on the side of a hill it's tough to have level tees but they do a good job

There's definitely more uphill holes than downhill. The problem is the parking lot is at the bottom of the biggest hill so to keep players from throwing at parked cars, the first 5 holes either go up the hill away from the parking lot, or across the hill. There are a couple of downhill holes later on though

The baskets aren't quite where the signs make you look, and the green ones do blend in.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't drive hours out of my way to come here, but this is a pleasant, well-kept course with nice views that gives you enough challenges to stay alert.

The course is directly across the street from the Susquehanna River which is wide and beautiful at this location The course immediately sends you up the hillside away from the river and the next four holes play along the steep hillside facing the water. The views are more exciting than the holes. By the end of hole 5 you're kind of wondering if every hole is going to be uphill, and sure enough, 6 is uphill again, except this time you're in a more wooded area.

The views of the river disappear for a while, but the holes become more strategic and entertaining. There is a very solid stretch of golf starting on 6 with really no glaring weaknesses right through 18. Especially 10 -12 which you'll want to play multiple times to figure out what to do.

Perhaps 14 and 17 are a little ho-hum but you're still in the wooded setting. It's very pleasant. 18 is a beautiful finisher, downhill headed towards the river, through the park wooded areas then into an open field, if you're playing orange. The green basket is way over to the right just before you exit the grove, it's tough to find at first.

I didn't score different to par on either the green or orange course. If you have moderate distance, you'll be able reach most of the baskets for a birdie putt. If you're paying attention to the firm greens, making 18 pars is not a grueling feat

The course is definitely a workout. It's not crazy long, but it is quite hilly, especially to start, and there are a lot of left-to-right curving shots if you want to get close. It's a course that does not favor the usual righty backhander.

Good place to take a beginner, and I imagine everyone finds something they like here, especially left-handers. It's not a total pushover, I imagine even par to the green is probably 900-ish on PDGA ratings. Even par to the orange is probably 920-ish. There's a tournament there in two weeks, we'll see

This course was one of the venues for the 2019 Amateur World Championships, they played all Orange and even par was 942 rated. That seems kind of high, but maybe it was windy.

Solid Course in a Hilly Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2022 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Turf tees, prodigy baskets, excellent signage (with elevation change illustrated - which is great, because almost every hole has some elevation change to consider). Some holes have a long (orange) basket.

The only real "con" is that four of the first five holes play uphill (dramatically). And several of them have tees that you have to walk down to. It's like you have to keep climbing up the same damn hill. And even though the ground is cart-friendly, you might question the wisdom while you're dragging a cart uphill much of the first third of the course

Hole #6 takes you deeper into the park and you have to start dodging a lot of old growth trees. The layout takes advantage of natural features including groves of trees, a stream and exposed rock faces. A few holes are enhanced with raised baskets. There are virtually no holes that play side-by-side and the layout will take you all around this huge park. Expect 90 minute rounds with no waiting for others

There is an OB stream that comes into play on holes 9 - 12 (I found it 3 times in 2 holes).

Other than the exertion of getting through the initial holes, there are no real "cons." The course is solid and will challenge up to intermediate players - advanced players and big arms can tear it up. All the holes are good, but only a few are particularly memorable. There's a good stretch of 9 -11: narrow downhill with a steep sidehill that feeds into OB, a short uphill with a narrow slot to navigate to a basket perched on top of an exposed rock face, and a downhill to a raised basket with OB behind and the stream crossing in front (yet it still screams "Ace Run!").

Well-maintained park with lots of hills, a handful of alternate baskets to make up a longer layout and some really good, challenging holes. A solid 4.0 , and better by far than many park courses.

solid course, hole info needs to be updated 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I don't really want to repeat what all the other reviewers have said, but, Klines Run is a challenging course with a lot of elevation changes. It doesn't seem to be a heavily used park, at least not during the week. The fairways are well maintained, and at least today the rough wasn't bad. Porta Potties a plenty.

Cons:

As others have said, the ratio of downhill throws to uphill is decidedly uneven. Understandable, but unfortunate. The dog walkers are usually considerate, but there do seem to be a lot of them. As we were finishing up today, we noticed some people on blankets in the middle of the first hole fairway. I don't know if that's common here, I've seen it at other public park courses. Some next tee arrows need to be reset. Like most courses, the signage isn't really great about the direction the pad faces in relation to where the baskets are. As others have said, the tee pads are scary. It would be nice if they would put in concrete pads without a drop-off in front. My biggest con, and the only reason I'm writing this review, is that baskets have been added since 2020 (which is when I last played), and the hole info has not been updated on dgcoursereview. It also bugs me that rather than add a new layout with the new baskets, they modified the old layout. I.e., some of the old baskets are on each of the new layouts. I wish they'd update the hole info to show 3 courses, the original one, for people like me who want to play the same course and compare scores, and the two new layouts, for people who either don't care or haven't played before.

Other Thoughts:

The new basket and layout change isn't really a con, I probably should have put that here. Oh well. Watch out on hole 2, it's really easy to roll down the hill almost to the parking area. I've done it multiple times, and it's frustrating to get off to that bad a start. Hole 10 is another one where the difference between a birdie and a double bogey depends on the first toss. Just FYI, if you're making a special trip to play Klines, consider going to play Samuel Lewis State Park afterwards, it's a really fun 9 hole course.

Solid Course, Great Views, Sketchy Tee Pads 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Plentiful Parking and has a porta-potty
- Located centrally between York and Lancaster and close to Rt. 30 and I-83
- Park is well maintained and the course sheds water really well
- Multiple basket locations add variability
- Course makes good use of available space, there are several par 4s and a lot of different shot options.
- Each tee sign has a QR code that leads to drone footage of the fairway. Not many courses can say they have that.
- Prodigy baskets are very nice and new.
- This course has the most elevation changes of any course in the area. It makes you think about every shot.
- Walking up to the basket on Hole #5 is one of the prettiest views in disc golf, change my mind.

Cons:

- Public park can become crowded. Cookouts, walkers, and people enjoying the views can spill onto the disc golf course and can be distracting.
- The park will not allow a bridge to be built over the creek between hole 9 and 10 which can make it difficult to cross if the water is high.
- It is difficult to get up and down the creek bank. Recovering a disc can turn into a muddy affair.
- Hole #6 has one of the more difficult fairways that I've played
- The Teepads here are borderline dangerous... more on this to follow.

Other Thoughts:

I routinely drive 30 minutes out of my way after work to play in random draw doubles at Klines on Monday evenings. I think this is a fun course that is challenging but rewarding and the hills provide great exercise. I know a lot of people that love this course. But.... I hate the Tee pads here. When this course was put in the park did not allow any permanent structures to be installed which means the tee boxes are elevated with artificial grass pads and were built off site so they are sized to fit in the bed of a pickup truck. So now this picturesque course has under sized elevated tee pads built onto hill sides without adequate run up and follow through space. Add in wet artificial grass pads and I am very surprised no one has gotten seriously hurt here yet. I am moderately tall and I have to modify my walkup every time I play here. The drop off at the end of the tee can mess with your mind and subconsciously alter your throw. I never get comfortable throwing off the tee until around hole 6 and by then I feel that my round has already been affected. I will continue to come out and play this course because it is fun but I will also continue to hate the tee pads here because they are my nemesis.

Pros:

Sweet course really enjoyed the layout.

new tee signs and boxes on every hole.

"Next tee" arrows hang on most baskets and direct you to the next tee box.

Prodigy baskets including a practice basket.

Fast greens, elevation changes on what feels like every hole.

14-18 were great closing holes.

Majestic views of the river and in a mature park setting, large trees and very clean.

Multiple Porta-John restrooms located throughout the park.

Plays fairly quick if your having a good day.

Cons:

Tee boxes would be my only concern. I had no issues at all, not a fan of the fake grass when playing in wet conditions.

Other Thoughts:

Looking forward to going back next time I'm in the area. Nice mix of up, down and flat holes.

Uphill both ways 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Stunning views looking over the Susquehanna River, in a beautifully landscaped park. Nice park-like grassy lawns under large trees, and a clear running stream amongst a few holes add to the beauty of this course.
Don't be fooled by the short hole lengths! Many of those 'short' holes are severely uphill, and play like they're 100-200 ft longer! I was expecting to work on my mid/approach game, and ended up leaning on my longest distance drivers for uphill rips on quite a few holes. Strongly sloped greens also test your putting confidence and risk tolerance. Many holes have OB paths on one or both sides that also test your accuracy, on top of the many trees on nearly every hole.
Tee signs are very nicely done, including elevation profiles, and QR codes to look up drone fly-throughs (also available directly on YouTube). I think all baskets included arrows hanging under the spokes that pointed to the next tee location, making navigation pretty straightforward.

Cons:

For all the massive uphill throws (and there are quite a few, it actually became a little repetitive to me), there are almost no downhill throws to speak of! I think I understand why, because the parking lot, the road, and a playground are all along the bottom of the hill. But it's still such a shame, considering the incredible beauty of the views on this course. A top-of-the-world-type hole could've been one of the signature holes in all of disc golf.
Instead, I personally don't feel like any of the holes are particularly memorable. Lots of uphill rips, lots of weaving through gaps. The holes along the creek are more puzzling than memorable to me as well.
The lack of downhill holes also makes a few hole transitions strange early on. Hole 1 is severely uphill, then hole 2 plays flat along the slope. Then suddenly, getting to hole 3's tee requires an extreme downhill run all the way down to the parking lot, for another uphill rip. And yet again, getting to 4's tee makes you run downhill to the parking lot again, to prepare for another uphill rip. Just one semi-downhill hole here would've been fun, and improved the course flow all in one! I do understand the safety limitations, but surely a compromise solution could've been found somewhere?
A few baskets and tees are quite close to one another, which required some cautious play during the tournament. Also on some tees, you can see multiple baskets, and you'll have to study the tee sign to tell which one is your target.
The brand new turf-covered tee pads are very good, but I'm not sure how they play in wet conditions, and a few may be too small for those with long run-ups.

Other Thoughts:

Again, don't be fooled by the short hole distances or overall course length! This is NOT a beginner-friendly course! Many of the short holes are severely uphill, playing more like 350-450 ft shots. And many of the longer holes weave their way through hallways of trees, requiring both distance and accuracy to navigate. This is a very demanding, challenging course, not at all what you might imagine when you see 200 ft holes. While you catch your breath after dragging yourself uphill yet again, do admire the incredible views, and imagine what a signature hole here could play like.

Awesome, One-of-a-kind course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you played here before the redesign in 2019, you need to come back, this is a signature course now! The course navigates through park that has tall mature trees that provides awesome shade, but at the same time doesn't create pain in the ass obstacles. The course is never flat, you are always shoot up or down a hill, which creates really cool valley shots and across-the-creek shots. Most holes also give you different path options with risk/reward, which is really cool because it makes you play the hole (not just throwing the disc as far as you can and then repeat). It makes you think where to layup and plan for your next shot.
Signage was signature because:
a. Elevation Change for each hole
b. QR code to scan for each hole that gave a drone fly-over, and it actually came in handy!
c. Overall sharp, easy to read sign, with direction to the next hole on it
Turf tee pads.
New bright green prodigy baskets with flags on top.
Epic holes! - both holes 10 and 11 were truly awesome.
Great shade cover from the park trees.
Great elevation change from hole to hole.
Great direction for the next hole.
Very well maintained.
Beautiful views of the river.

Cons:

No benches.
No water fountains.

Other Thoughts:

Gorgeous park that looks like it has other activities other than just disc golf.

Up, Down, and All Around 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Some type of (usually significant) elevation change on practically every hole.
+Many types of elevation changes.
+Teepads: 5'x10' astrograss, or whatever it is called.
+Sufficient signs at tees, useful directional arrows on baskets.

Cons:

-Too many, mainly early, throw up a hill/slope, walk down to the next tee, then throw up a hill/slope.
-Single tee/basket location per hole.
-Park roads could come into play on several holes
-Need a better way to cross the creek from #10's tee to basket

Other Thoughts:

Kline's Run is essentially a very, very big hill, with large hardwoods scattered throughout, a creek along the northside, and views of the Susquehanna. The disc golf course plays up (often), down/atop/across (somewhat), and along the creek/roads (sometimes). Elevation changes are the primary challenge, as the trees are most often fairly well spaced, with only a few denser pockets, and hole lengths (mostly) are not oppressive.

My (RHBH, ~315' max, ~285' typical) perspective of the holes:
#1 Short, steep uphill, open, a few trees late
#2 Short, flat, single tree at 2/3rds point, sharp drop-off right/behind basket
#3 Short, steep upslope, tree branches force low if right, wide if left
#4 Long, steep upslope, scattered trees throughout, two long slight left-turners
#5 Short, steep uphill, open, a few trees late
#6 Very long, rolling/flattish, multitude of scattered/dense trees, going right a bit more open
#7 Short, downslope, few scattered trees mid/late, straight with slight fade at end to find blind basket
#8 Mid-length, rolling, sparsely scattered trees
#9 Short, downslope, right-turner, ob-road left, basket semi-protected by flowering trees
#10 Short, upslope, moderate window late, left fade to reach basket
#11 Short, downslope, moderate right-turner, creek if too long/faded
#12 Long, downslope then flat, creek crossing with two possible windows
#13 Mid-length, steep uphill, open, a few trees late
#14 Long, cross-slope, scattered trees, choice of right-turning windows, basket well-guarded late
#15 Mid-length, flat, sparsely scattered trees, moderate right-turner
#16 Long, rolling, lots of scattered trees, right-side more open, but adds length
#17 Mid-length, valley, scattered trees, slight right at end
#18 Long, steadily downslope, scattered trees initial 3/4ths

The six (#'s 4,6,12,14,17,18) par=4 are challenging but obtainable. About half the holes should offer possible birdy opportunities - only a few holes will probably score practically only 3's.

This is a very solid course, and will well-complement the other courses being used for the 2019 AM Worlds. Comparatively short to the others, but the relentless variety of elevation changes and out-of-bounds make it stand out.

Run to Kline's Run! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Kline's Run is a pretty, well-used park. The course winds up and over a large bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River. Elevation changes throughout, with a variety of uphill, downhill, side-hill, and valley holes. I don't think there is a flat hole on the course, and each 9-hole loop finished with a fun downhill technical bomb.

This is one of those rare courses where most of the holes are in the woods, but the fairways are mostly mown grass. I would describe the course as somewhere between wooded park-style and semi-open mature woods.

The course was brand new when I played. Even without a map or next tee signs, navigation from hole to hole was pretty straightforward. Just follow the white "next tee" arrow on each basket. Generally walks between holes were short. The longest walk was probably between holes 10 and 11 - follow the path up the hill, and then turn left on the gravel road.

Each 9-hole loop ends at the parking lot. Hole 1 is at one end of the long parking lot, and hole 9 finishes at the other end. Parking in the middle would facilitate stopping at the car between nines.

Level artificial turf teepads provide good footing on every hole (but see cons).

Beautiful views of the Susquehanna River from the parking lot and from several locations on the course.

Port-a-pots and trash cans distributed throughout the course. I don't know if these are permanent or for 2019 Am Worlds, but nice either way.

Playing this course made me smile, and I look forward to playing here again.

Cons:

The first part of the course has several holes where you throw uphill, walk downhill to the next tee, and then throw uphill again. I would much rather walk uphill and throw downhill.

I wished the artificial turf teepads were a little longer and wider, even though I do not have a long run-up. On many holes the tees are built as raised platforms to provide a consistently level teeing surface on the hilly course. The disadvantage of raised platforms is that drop-offs at the ends and/or sides of the pad on several holes made the teepad feel constrained.

When I played the tee signs did not show hole distance or layout (see other thoughts), and the course map was not yet available. Sometimes I scouted ahead; sometimes I just threw down what looked like the fairway and hoped for the best. I expect tee signs and a course map will be provided as course installation proceeds.

A few holes had blind shots in areas where people might be walking. For example hole 9 is a blind downhill right-turning shot back towards the parking lot. I recommend scouting ahead to make sure no one is in the line of fire.

Hole 18 is a long downhill finishing hole. At about 1/3 of the distance the fairway was pretty congested and it seemed pretty random whether drives would get through or not. Unless I missed seeing a line, this hole would be improved by widening the fairway at this point.

Other Thoughts:

Kline's Run was completely redesigned for 2019 Am Worlds. The original version was an object course that had apparently fallen into disrepair, but the new course is well designed, challenging, and beautiful. I played shortly after all baskets and teepads had been installed.

I rated the course based on the high quality of the holes and my high level of enjoyment playing the course. I assume amenities such as informative tee signs and a course map will eventually be provided. If my assumptions are incorrect I will probably downgrade my rating by a half point.

Course seems to be designed for someone who can throw 350' or more. As 300ish-throwing old fart, quite a few holes played as drive, short upshot, drop-in. Not the course's fault that I don't throw farther, of course.

Several tee marker poles on the back 9 did not indicate the hole number. In most cases the proper teepad was easy to figure out by following the "next tee" arrow on the previous hole's basket. I expect the poles will be marked as the course is completed.

There were a few places where steep grades would benefit from some sort of stairs. One example would be the uphill path between holes 10 and 11.

Hole #11 looked like an epic downhill tunnel shot across the creek. I threw 2 shots, and one made it across. Walked down the fairway to discover that the hole doglegs right before the creek. Whoops, guess I should have checked ahead on that hole lol.

Scenic. Hilly. Beautiful. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm beyond happy to say - I'm now revising my course review, because this is now a new and very, very much improved and redesigned course definitely worth the visit.

First off, thank you so much to the York County Disc Club for adopting this course. Passion and labor involved is obvious to those of us aware of how much work is involved with bringing a course into the world.

At first glance, it just appears as though this course has always been here. This is something i point out, because that is usually my first indication of a very well thought out and designed course. There aren't any obvious stumps, or evidence of course-carving, and forcing a hole to exist. The land and objects were carefully observed, and the designers allowed the land to present the fairways to them, rather than forcing a hole where they thought one should be.

Planted along the Susquehanna River, This course treats you to beautiful views. Take a moment while playing and just take it all in.

Bathrooms, bathrooms everywhere! Suffice it to say, there are multiple port-a-john's on the course, and it would be a short walk to find one, which is good news for the lady golfers, and keeps the boys from peeing in the woods, or off the tees. (Don't act like you haven't)

On the day that i played, the course was well manicured with very little to no undergrowth. For the exception of a few holes, there shouldn't be too many issues of crawling into a bush and awkwardly throwing from a thicket. Even an off trajectory shot is offers redemption, rather than punishment.

Level and turfed teeboxes for all 18 holes. The effort for solid footwork on each hole is obvious.

The tee signs are extravagant! The normal hole information is there (map. distance. par.) but it also displays elevation. And the best part - is if you cant see the basket - there is a QR code you can use on your phone to take you to a video of a drone fly-by video showing you in first person view the hole from tee to basket.

Cons:

I'm certain this can be revised in the future since the course was just installed at the time of this review.

If it's your first visit, nothing in the parking lot tells you exactly where hole #1 is. You'll see baskets, and tees - and rely on your deductive skills to zero in on where the first hole is. (pssst - its by the pavilion)

Benches don't effect play, but with more courses offering these amenities, the lack of a place to sit down at each hole, especially in a crowded tournament waiting for the next hole to clear, must be considered in today's state of disc golf.

Only one hole in particular comes to mind where two tees are close to each other. Again, this may be an issue in a tournament where groups are chatting and shuffling through bags while others are focused and trying to tee off.

Lack of a bridge on hole 10. You must rock-hop or get your feet wet. There are creative ways to cross, but as it stands (May 2019), there just isn't a practical way that makes sense other than just getting down into the creek bed and doing it. All alternative routes take longer, require you to walk on a road, or go entirely out of your way and backtrack.

All of the tees are on elevated platforms. Lots of effort were put into their construction, but i found myself not giving 100% on my throws in fear of falling or stepping down off the front of them...which i did, twice in the early holes.

Hole 12's tee sign (as of May 2019) displayed two positions, one short, one long. I didn't check the drone video - but i shot for long - only to find out two strokes later that long didn't exist yet.

Hole 18 is very well designed and exciting to shape a throw, but by the way the water run-off is designed in conjunction with the park road, depending on the weather on any given day, you are truly playing in a muddy mess.

Other Thoughts:

Kudo's to the York County Disc Club once again. With their original success with Sam S Lewis park, and now Klines Run - the club has proven right out of the gate that they are more than capable of thoughtfully approaching land owners, pitching a course appropriately and professionally, and planting a course worthy of a PDGA Worlds event. I am not a member of the club or known them personally, but with this proven track record and success - i aim to become one.

Pros:

nice location, right next to longlevel, very open to begin, throughout the middle there are many trees as obstacles, one or two holes are very cool as you throw over water that runs through the park

Cons:

-You are throwing at posts, not at disc catchers
-The course is not layed out that well, it can be difficult to figure out where the next hole is or to see the post that you are supposed to be throwing at

Other Thoughts:

I will probably not play this course again. Throwing at posts is like going to a park and just picking out trash cans to throw at. I agree with other reviews that this could be a pretty cool course if it was mapped out better and had disc catchers.

Nice idea 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Good idea for a course. 18 target poles. Some nice elevation changes, both up & down hill.

Cons:

target only. In summer time, heavy use of the area makes the course dangerous. Natural tees are questionable.

Other Thoughts:

The course was put in as an Eagle Scout project, but after it went in (and the badge earned), the course was abandoned. The electric company that owns the property maintains the park. A few close to the area have tried to get baskets, but $$$ is a big issue and IMPO neglected what could be a very nice disc golf layout.
