Challenging course with good variety of holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of open shots and tight lines

Well-maintained

Grass is in good shape

Baskets appear pretty new

Cons:

Can get extremely windy

Not a great course for beginners

Can be somewhat confusing to navigate

Lots of foot traffic, beware of picnickers

Other Thoughts:

Lots of holes where a great throw, not a good throw will give you a chance at birdie. This is a real challenge for non-pros.

Well done 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Many seemingly open shots that still require quality shot shaping. Course design uses natural and man made park features to create interesting shot lines

Cons:

The neighborhood. There is a hole community of permanent campers over the ridge down by the river.

Other Thoughts:

If you have ever been to emporia Kansas you will instantly see the similarities to the Jones East and west courses. Eric McCabe has designed another demanding yet not overly punishing layout.

Great public course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean Signage
Free Parking (and Playing)
Well-kept grass and greenery
Good variety of holes and shot selection
Mix of short/long/uphill/downhill/mandos
Good flow between holes and use of the area

Cons:

A lot of chances for OB if you are not careful
Teepads can be slippery even in dry weather (because of mud and sprinklers)
Generally little shade and seating on hot days
Bathrooms are toward the end of the course
Fairways can be shared with picnickers and other sports

Other Thoughts:

Worth the drive. This is a course that rewards good shorts and long distance. Birdies are a privilege. Clean layout and well marked. There is a lot of OB (sidewalks) but generally won't come in to play. Terrain was not too punishing although there is plenty of sunshine in the summer. Overall a good course that can reward those with power and finesse. Great to practice on for those of us looking to improve our game.

Pros:

So many pros. This course sets the standard for:

- Signage. From the map by the parking lot, to the tee signs on each hole, and the arrows on each basket indicating where the next tee is, everything here was clear as day. No confusion as to where to go next. OB and mandos clearly explained. Really wish every course had this level of signage.
- Teepads. Basically 3 squares of sidewalk for each tee. Super smooth, clean, and consistent. No rubber mats, puddles, or lumpy teepads here, folks. How teepads should be!
- Baskets. This was my first time playing on the Dynamic Discs Veteran baskets, and they are immediately my favorites. Grabby chains, deep cage, and I love the blue. Makes them easy to see from a distance.
- Course design. Plenty of distance, opportunities for lots of different kinds of shots. Big downhill shots, open straight shots, tight uphill shots, some fun mandos, etc. It's mostly open, with some trees to contend with here and there but nothing that would qualify as "wooded". Great use of the park.

Cons:

One hole plays near a homeless encampment. A local told us that if your disc goes down there, they'll ask for $5 to give it back. When we walked by someone came out and offered to sell us discs they had found with people's names on them. A bummer, but stay on the fairway and it shouldn't be a problem!

One hole had a lot of electrical wires in the middle of the fairway, which I thought put a damper on the beauty of the course otherwise.

We played on a Sunday morning, and there was a small DIY worship service happening under the pavilion near the parking lot. There was a band playing that was REALLY distracting, while it lasted, but otherwise they didn't impact us at all.

Other Thoughts:

If this course were closer to me I would be here every day. It's a great experience, highly recommended if you are in the area or up for a road trip.

Narrows Riverside DGC Plays in A Great Park Perfect For Disc Golf! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played here during a steady downpour and there were actually two other fools out in the deluge. The Martha McLean Anza Narrows is a wonderful, hilly piece of land for a course. You are seldom throwing on level ground as there are lots of interesting valleys and hills to battle. This must have been a fun piece of land for the designers to have worked with.

The course has the tallest tee signs I've ever seen. The tops are about 8' high. As it was wet, I would have liked to hang my bag over them but I couldn't reach the top. These tall metal poles would be great to insert some bag holders but you probably don't usually need to hang your bag here. The tees are nice extra long concrete. The baskets are pretty blue Models by Veterans. The baskets have these nifty little, plastic next arrows markers which snap into the baskets rungs. I hadn't seen them before and I liked and appreciated them .

The course plays at probably an intermediate level with some tougher uphill throws and a very cool tunnel throw on # 15 where your clearance isn't more than about 8 feet. I also thought # 13 and # 4 were both very pretty holes. 17 is is a fun 315' open downhill run. I think # 18 is possibly the most challenging hole on the course. It's 305' uphill with a 40' wide double Mando between two trees about 200' out. I really didn't like # 10 and it's 395' playing wide open.

I liked the fact that the designers have kept the concept simple with only one basket position. This does make navigating easier.

Cons:

There's not much to dislike about The Narrows. It's set in a lovely park, is well designed and is intuitive to navigate. I guess there was some evidence of junk and some homeless garbage but only on a couple of holes.

Not a fan of # 10.

No staging area or course map/sign.

No benches and no bag holders on these tall poles.

Other Thoughts:

This would be a wonderful course to enjoy as your home course. I think it would be fair for most players and everyone will love it's delicious elevation. Rec players would still have fun as it's not too long or challenging for them while better players could work to shoot better scores.

Solid addition to the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice to have a well-marked, thoughtful 18-hole course in this area. Generally short grass with large isolated trees along a gentle, rolling hillside. Good variety of tee shots from quality concrete pads.

Lovely views of the Anza Narrows region of the Santa Ana River and San Bernardino Mountains.

Cons:

Might have benefited from a bit more variety in hole length, but overall makes good use of available space.

Occasionally one hikes down to a tee (a pet peeve.)

Abundance of OB requires control if the wind is blowing.

Other Thoughts:

1st tee is to the right on the railroad side of the parking lot.

Park includes a section of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.

Good course, glad to have it near by. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a well thought out course. It is very well marked and easy to follow. Has nice concrete tee pads and maps at each tee pad. The course starts and ends at the parking lot. This course utilizes a lot of technical elevation changes and challenging up hill shots. Tons of nice old growth trees on the course.

Cons:

-Large grass sections look like they were rototilled on 3 holes I want to say 7, 8, and 9. Also seemed to be a lot of feces on these 3 holes.
-Lots of homeless coming through the park due to it being on the Santa Ana River.

Other Thoughts:

This is probably the nicest course I have played that is immedietly in Riverside. Definitely very happy to have this course near by.
