Epic scenery in the middle of nowhere

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Some of the most unique scenery I've encountered on a DGC
+ Interesting pin placement (several up on rocks!)
+ Quality concrete tee pads
+ Discatcher baskets
+ Long bomber holes including a 'Top of the World' shot
+ One of only two courses in the region
+ Close to the town of Holbrook
+ Close to I-40 (for course baggers traveling through)

Cons:

- No tee signs (maintains the 'natural' desert feel but requires using UDisc to navigate to the next tee/basket)
- Hidden pin locations often required hiking up to find the basket (resulted in a 2 hour solo round)
- End of course is boring throwing across flat desert
- Seemingly similar, endless scrub across the holes makes it tough to find a disc when thrown 400+ ft

Other Thoughts:

This course 'wowed' me from the get go. I would give this a '5' for uniqueness and scenery. Some of the holes are singular in their epic hidden pin placements up on rocks that scream for a calendar photo shoot, while unfortunately there are also mediocre 'throw it far across the desert' slogs. If you are a course bagger traveling on the I-40 corridor, I would consider this a must-play for an eastern Arizona course grab. Couple this with the Hidden Cove DGC ~20 minutes away, and you could spend a great day in Holbrook with these 2 courses + Petrified Forest National Park + shopping/eating for a memorable experience.
