Pros:
* Pretty little 9 hole course, one of the only courses in a 20 mile area.
* Located in a very family friendly public lake and park system
* Always kept clean and well maintained
* very easy to follow the the course, as it is a smaller layout and very beginner-friendly
* A couple of holes actually use the elevation at-hand to give a sense of greater difficulty
* Local park ranger (Jason) is very friendly, and loves to see disc golfers out there playing. He'll approach any group and be sincerely happy to see you playing. Jason was a key figure to getting the course set up.
* Nice baskets, signage, and concrete teepads for every hole.
* Mailbox next to tee #1 contains free pencils and scorecards
* Once you are done playing, you can go boating, fishing, hiking, camping, picnicking, swimming etc etc. Great place to spend the weekend.
Cons:
* Teepads are a bit small for most folks, don't expect a huge run-up on all holes.
* Since this is bordering picnic areas, you may have plenty of park-goers "interferring" on hole #1, always be courteous and give anyone a heads-up prior to throwing.
* The large parking lot is not for public use (unless you reserve it). You must park down by the boat ramp, or around the circle. If you park in the circle it's actually pretty convenient to get to several holes.
* There is a small fee, per car ($3 I think), to get into the park. That's just the way it is, and be happy to have nice facilities and a fun DG course to boot.
Other Thoughts:
All of the underbrush by hole #2 was cut out, so no more getting cut by thorns. There is a no alcohol policy on this course, and they absolutely mean it. A lot of work and effort went into getting this course put in, so please don't be selfish and respect the grounds rules. All it takes it for a group to be selfish and give the local community a bad name.
The most scenic hole is #1, beautiful "valley" shot. The wind can absolutely be a factor on this course on any given day, as the lake funnels the wind through the park. While every hole "is a bird", getting -3 or -4 on a very windy day is impressive.
Here's my suggestion to what you should expect at a particular skill level, on an ideal day;
27 (0) Novice
25 (-2) Intermediate
23 (-4) Advanced
21 (-6) Pro
Bogies are most easily attained by going out of bounds (on, or across the road), or by hitting an early tree on some holes, or rolling down the hill on #9. OB really only comes into play on holes 4, 6, and 9.
Course Record (as far as I know), is 19 (-8).
Here is how I would handicap the holes (I have TD'd out there more than anyone else as of Nov 2014).
Hole/Handicap
1/6
2/7
3/8
4/5
5/4
6/3
7/2
8/9
9/1
It's a fun course, great for a 27 hole "marathon". Closest courses to Oologah DG course are Claremore Lake (9 holes), and Centennial (Owasso, OK). Thanks for reading.
