Versatile 9-hole course in a cool park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Surrounding park is awesome, great bathrooms, water fountain, water bottle filler.
- Plenty of parking even if there is a little trek to the course
- No entry fee
- Red baskets are perfect for novice/first timers
- Difference between blue and yellow pin placements is enough to make second 9 feel fresh
- obvious flow, impossible to get lost
- not a ton of walking from basket to next tee, makes play very efficient and quick
- Hole 2 is awesome dogleg skip shot, holes 4-7 are all great elevation changes. 4-5 are both short but super fun, especially if you are going for the island green on 4.
- Greens on hole #2 and #7 are well guarded which makes placement off the tee very important
- Decent use of OB to make some of the easier holes a bit more challenging
- Benches at pretty much every tee! I'm sure those are used during tournament play...
- If it's not too crowded the play is super fast, I've played 18 here in under 2 hours
- Friendly locals, get the sense that between the league and tournaments here there is a great, active community of disc golfers.
-Circular tee pads were a nice touch considering the different directions people might be throwing with different pin placements

Cons:

- Not a huge challenge for more seasoned players, especially ones with a big arm. Lines are very open and forgiving, not any narrow gaps of the tee to speak of. Hole #2 is the only tee shot with a low ceiling.
- Can't imagine the pace of play is great on a crowded day at a 9 hole course. There were a few pockets of waiting.
- Kind of nit picky but placement of bulletin board on hole #2 fooled me into thinking it was #1. Would also be good if #9 basket was somewhat closer to #1 tee since you have to cross a few holes to get there.

Other Thoughts:

What a fun little course! The holes have character and a few of them are really memorable. Hole #2, #4, #5 are my favorites and I love the blind tee shot on #7. I don't have any serious complaints about this course, I had a hard time writing the Cons section as such. Given the available space the designer did a fantastic job crafting this course. Would love to take a first timer or two here as they would love playing to the red baskets.

Confidence Round with Nice Touches 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Creative course design, featuring 9 circular cement tees, each with 3 baskets (red = short, blue = mid, yellow = long). Could play as 27, but I played 18 - reds on 1-9 and yellows 10-18.

- Every hole (except, I think, the first two) has a great chill zone, which is a nice touch. I played around 1pm and I'd say about 50% of the holes offered a shaded seating area.

- Great signage! Signs at each tee show positions for all 3 baskets, different pin positions (if applicable), OB, and directions to the next tee when it isn't obvious.

- Excellent hole variation. Uphill, downhill, doglegs left and right, water hazards on a few holes - the only thing I can think of that this course doesn't offer is much in the way of wooded tunnel shots, but the topography doesn't exactly lend itself to that.

- Exclusive disc golf use on the property. I'm used to playing at Oak Grove and Chavez Ridge, where there are often bystanders that are oblivious to disc golf and can get in the way. Disc golfers have the course to themselves here, which is fantastic and gives the course a great vibe.

- I've seen this course get dinged in the other reviews for being too easy or not a "true" 18/27 holes, but I really liked the layout - and who doesn't like having a better score now and then? The short baskets are great for beginners, a good confidence round for more advanced players, and fun for ace runs. If you play blues and yellows, there are certainly some challenges.

- Plays quickly, I think I got through 18 in about 45 minutes and I wasn't in a hurry.

- Some unique touches, like the rock circle around the yellow basket on hole 4, or the tin-can wind-chime obstacle on hole 9. Love the creativity with the course design.

- Course seems to get plenty of TLC. Was very well maintained. Didn't see a single piece of trash or any overgrown vegetation.

Cons:

- Compared to courses like Oak Grove or La Mirada, these holes are mostly on the short side and are definitely easier to par. If you like a long course, this isn't it. If you're a pro, sure, it might be easy, but I found it sufficiently challenging.

- There are some homes that back up to the course, and on hole 7 (I believe), you run the risk of having a disc go into someone's backyard.

- As mentioned above, there are only 9 tee pads at this course. I'm hesitant to list this as a con, because the three baskets for each hole, and multiple pin positions for the blues and yellows, still allow for a good bit of variation here.

- The property is mostly open, so during the heat of the day the sun beats down on you pretty hard. There are plenty of shaded benches throughout, but you'd be wise to wear some suntan lotion (I didn't and I got scorched - d'oh!).

Other Thoughts:

My solo round at Rabbit Flats was really enjoyable, and even though it's an hour from where I live I'll absolutely go back. Very close to the Thousand Oaks mall - definitely worth checking out if you find yourself in the area!

9 Hole Course with 3 Pins each 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Legitimately maximizes the use of the space
-Great teepads
-Phenomenal signage
-Fairly easy navigation
-Easy to find baskets
-Nice benches on many holes
-Right next to huge fields for driving practice/fieldwork/warmup
-Uncrowded
-Prevalent wind and island greens provide some challenge
-Cool creek that runs along the East side
-Nice views of hills to the West side

Cons:

-Not a single bathroom nearby
-No drinking fountains
-Hardly challenging
-Almost no obstacles
-Zero to minimal shade throughout *entire course*
-Very hot in Summer (95F on peak days)
-Kind of a pain to get to from 101 Freeway
-Repetitive scenery
-Thousand Oaks is a notoriously boring area
-TOHS Cross Country practice runs through the course Fall afternoons

Other Thoughts:

Rabbit Flats is a essentially a glorified 9 hole course. It's 9 teepads with 3 different pins: Reds for short (like 150-200 ft), Blue for pins 1 thru 9 and Yellow for Pins 10 thru 18. This course is going to take a while until it develops into something that provides more of a challenge, as trees have been planted but it'll take years (if not decades) for them to become true obstacles. If you have 300 feet of maximum power, you will have a blast, as nearly all pins should be reachable with that amount of power. The course takes nice advantage of a very steep slope along one side, providing some fun elevation shots. The lack of a single restroom or drinking fountain is near inexcusable for a place as suburban as Thousand Oaks. The signage is so well done I at times just read the sign and threw without looking for the basket (that maybe a testament to how unchallenging and obstacle free this course is.) The course is covered in large wood chips which are used for little mounds that provide a 2 to 3 foot tall bunker around some pins. I almost wish the course was left as hard-pack dirt, making for super-fast greens that provide another challenge. The course is often nice and breezy, if not legitimately windy, again providing a challenge to work with. If you're a beginner or want to learn and are in the TO area, I couldn't recommend a better course. If you can throw over 300 feet, know how to handle wind, and aren't around the area, don't bother going to Rabbit Flats.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

27 possible holes with a variety of uphill, downhill and straight shots with a few obstacles (trees, woodchip piles). There's a decent amount of wind, so this is a great place to step down to a mid or putter for stable driving. Good condition concrete tees with great signage.

Cons:

Short course. There is a creek with dense shrubbery that the wind likes to carry discs into. My party had 6 total discs land in this area over the course of game. One of the holes is a bit difficult to find and requires a short walk through a hidden path near the creek.

Other Thoughts:

Not a super hard course and not worth a trip out just to play this one, but if you're passing through the area, its great for a quick 18.

Good young course with room to grow 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-PERFECT signage, never seen better
-good use of the space.
-medium-high shot variety (will grow with the new trees
-WIDE skill range: Reds are great for newbies, blue and yellow range from nice birds to almost par 4s
- great ace runs on a few holes (#4/13 in particular)
- elevation changes made it a good challenge

Cons:

-WIND is oppressively strong
-some pin placements were nonsensical.
-Hole 7/16 needs rethinking. The Red pin is a neat shot, but blue and yellow are not well place in relation to the tee pad.
if there are any restrooms/water fountains, they must be pretty far away.
-Mandy on hole 2 is awful for the blue pin, seems like it's there because of a dirt jogging/bike path.

Other Thoughts:

Not one I would make a trek out for (at least not until the trees grow in). Still, definitely worth playing if you're passing through the area. The signage should be a model for every course in the country, could not be any more clear.

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 19, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is one of the only 18-hole courses in the surrounding area. Red, Blue and Yellow basket sequence is easy to understand, with red and blue colors indicating short and long positions on the front nine, with yellow baskets reserved for the back nine. Good cement tees with decent signage.

Has quite a few downhill and uphill tee shots which add to the fun factor, along with a few man-made hazards such as dirt mounds which do influence play. My favorite holes were the downhill holes, especially #4/#13 which are easily deuced with precision overhand shots. From the highest points on the course you can see the mountains surrounding Thousand Oaks, which appears to be a very nice area. The area bordering the course on the north side has a small creek that is sheltered by palm trees, a small plus in terms of atmosphere.

Cons:

As mentioned elsewhere, the front and back nine share the same area. The course itself was barren and treeless, likely due to the 2013-early 2014 drought. Some backtracking is necessary on occasion to find the next tee. No signage indicating that there is a disc golf course in the area aside from a kiosk near Hole 2, which is a long way back from nearby Moorpark Rd. Though this course does well at maximizing land use, it's still 18 holes crammed into 9 acres. Those who have played courses such as Idlewild or Leviathan won't be too impressed by the course difficulty level; I was able to par easily with a few overhand lobs despite my low player rating.

Other Thoughts:

Though the area is surrounded by walking paths and baseball and soccer fields, the small area partitioned off for disc golf is disc golf-only. A nice park in a nice area, this is a decent beginning to intermediate level course that can be finished in an hour, which is nice if you happen to play a course like Coyote Point the next day. A $2 donation to play is fair, but not a bargain considering the lack of maintenance.

Worth Playing!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of elevation changes. Variety of shots needed. Map/scorecard available at first tee. Disc golf only on site. Was not crowded, only saw two other groups. Benches for sitting at tee boxes. Nice tee pads and baskets. They have a lost and found bin on the west end of the course.

Cons:

Hardly any shade. Elevation changes made for some stiff calves the next day. Didn't see any drinking water on site (was about 90 the day I went, so good thing I brought water), and no restrooms either (I hit the community center first). Saw some poison ivy/oak, so beware.

Other Thoughts:

For sure worth playing. I parked in the community center parking lot and walked across the soccer fields to the course. Some won't like the long walk, but I'm a walker, so all was good. Locals were cool. Because of the small course layout and the shared tee boxes, you might have to duck some errant shots if playing on a crowded day. There's a creek that comes into play on a few holes. Some baskets are mounted on top of mounds, making for challenging shots/putts. There's a lot of woodchips and dirt on the ground, no grass, so maybe wear your hiking shoes. Because of the woodchips, discs didnt skip well, thus shortening your shots. Only needed long driver a few times, mostly used fairway drivers and mid range discs. There's a donation box at the first tee, to help out with course maintainence. It's pretty secluded out there, no one else but a few players, and I saw someone doing some sort of maintainence. I will play again next time in TO.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Rabbit Flats fills the disc golf void in this area. It is readily apparent that the locals love this course and have worked hard to make it a fun disc golf experience.

- The tee pads are awesome! I love the circular pads, these make it easy to change pin placements later, or even for safari holes in the other direction.
- New baskets, with multiple baskets on each hole, to keep it interesting.
- Big elevation change, hole 4 being the most memorable.
- Overall a fun experience. It is easy enough to attract beginners to the sport, but offers a fair enough challenge to develop some skills.
- The area seems pretty DG exclusive, you don't have to worry about hitting pedestrians and strollers.

Cons:

Not too much in the way of trees at this point. So the elevation is the only major obstacle, not too many trees to get in the way.

It is mostly short and open, making it deuce or die for advanced players.

Other Thoughts:

It is cool to see the amount of work that the club put into this course. Using the land they were given they made this into interesting layout with some good variety. The elevation keeps things from feeling too repetitive. If you are in the area it is worth playing, but it is not worth planning a road trip around.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course makes really excellent use of the space available. The course uses a mostly open area with a hillside at two edges. About half of the holes use the elevation nicely to add some variety, including a fun downhill throw and a tricky shot that is uphill to some pin placements and up and over to another. There aren't a lot of trees, but what's there is used well to protect pin locations on a couple holes. There is decent distance variety, especially with the different pin options on each hole.

There are some cool touches like berms around baskets and a rock island/lake (depending on which pin you're shooting at). The tees are very nice large concrete circles. With three baskets on each hole that allows for drives in any direction. The multiple baskets are a neat way of adding variety to a fairly small property, in a way that didn't seem to cause issues with folks playing different layouts at the same time. The course is fairly easy to follow.

Cons:

Despite a lot of creativity, this is still a pretty wide open course that allows for fairly straightforward shots on a lot of the holes. There are a few pins that stretch things out a little, but for the most part the distances are fairly short and that leaves the course feeling a little lacking in challenge for better players.

The course ends in an odd place, you have to cross through a few other holes to get back to the first tee or to leave the course on the way back to the parking lot. The long walk to and from the parking lot could be a con, I didn't rate down for it at all because I'd rather see a longer walk to a better course than a course through heavily used areas of a park.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find the red layout very approachable, and the blue and yellow layouts challenging but fair. More experienced players will find the course fairly straightforward, but fun. There are a few nice challenges, and some fun birdie/ace runs. I enjoyed my round here, and really liked seeing the creative use of the property. I love the idea of being able to play 9 holes of your choice or a full 27.

Improving 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First, from the first time till my round today this course continues improve and become more complex, so I am sure I will be editing this at some point.

-Easy parking
-giant oval teepads, that are well kept and make teeing off very easy.
-Easy to navigate once you get onto the first hole.
-Three hole stretch 4/13-6/15 offer a few unique looks, not really hard holes but more than just pitch and putt, splashed out 13 with a short thumbed today...damn!!
-Friendly local crew, I've had two discs returned to me here and have always found 2-3 people I can jump in a round with.

Cons:

-Wide open relative holes on half of the holes, this will be negated over time as trees grow in but that is probably 3-5 years out.
-No water I can find, it gets hot and dusty out there!
-Not really a controllable con but the creek water is pretty nasty, gonna have to give my roc a serious cleaning after dunking it on 4.

Other Thoughts:

This course makes great use of the existing space, with more time and alot more tree growth I could see giving this another disc.

For a short thrower like myself these holes are a great length, obtainable distances and plenty of birdie opportunities.

Advanced players will probably be bored to death out here, lots of putter/short midrange holes.

Having family in TO this is a course I will play when I'm in the neighborhood and be thankful for it's existence, but not a course I'd go out of my way to come to.

It is evident that a ton of work has been put in by the volunteers who made this course. Bravo. For the limited land they were given, they really put a lot of thought into maximizing it. I like the "island" green and the treachery of the creek on the north side of the course.

Great tee pads. Nice baskets.

Cons:

The land is limited, which restricts what is possible for making the course.

-next to sport fields for long drive or roller practice/warm up
-map available at kiosk
-straight forward marked OBs

-no crossing fairways

Cons:

-mostly short, wide open, easy holes.
-not very challenging for advanced/open players
-multiple colored baskets to throw at with no real signage can be weird at first
-no footage marked
-didn't really make use of limited foliage to present and additional technicality
-walk across field to kiosk, directly adjacent tee pad is hole 2? walk back to hole one...
-locals starting on hole 3 where closer parking is
-not a scenic course whatsoever
-no memorable or signature holes. one is on a mound but it's less than 300' away
-with all those baskets no practice basket
-blue and yellow baskets positions aren't really that different. most baskets for holes are grouped in a small area.

Other Thoughts:

We hit this course up on the way home from a road trip and was mildly disapointed. 27 primo baskets and 9 tee pads with easy lines and straight forward shots. Duece or die. Only a few long holes to air it out and they are not really that long. Good use of elevation for the area but the piece of land used has many limitations. It is obvious that a lot of work has been put into the course but it has a long way to go. Threw my putter on a lot of drives. I can only dream what we could do with that many baskets here in the bay area. They should try to secure a better, larger piece of land eventually and use 18 of the baskets from here to make a better course. Great place to bring out kids/girlfriends/beginers to introduce them to the game. If I am in the area again I would probably forgo another visit but if lived here i would play it. I imagine skilled locals play some fun safari holes to add length/challenge

Rabbit Flats - AWESOME! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Beautiful course! Huge varieties of throws. NOT FLAT! Lots of elevation changes. Accuracy pays off dividends! Many opportunities for trouble (out of bounds) if you get greedy for birdies or aces.
Lots of trees and shrubs have recently been planted on the fairways of 8, 9, 17, and 18.
- All available space utilized in fantastic ways to created 18 fun and challenging holes.
- Mulch is brought in routinely to reduce weed growth and keep the dust down, (although the course has beautiful green grass right now! :)
The mulch piles give great terrain variety before they are spread.
- Most holes have 2-4 alternate pin placements, and there are more being planned.
- Many holes (#s 7, 9, 14, 16,) play surprisingly long!
- For the following descriptions, I'm assuming a clockwise rotation, (right handed backhand).
- Tee 1/10: It's easy to "saw" one off to the right and go out of bounds (OB) on or across the jogging trail. You would be wise to throw more to the right than you think you should. But be careful to no throw it right into the hill that rises to the right! The kiosk by tee 2/11 was strategically placed to intercept errant drives to long hole 10 and protect people waiting on tee 2/11.
- Tee 2/11: Be sure to make the mandatory to the right of the marked tree. The best shots I've seen are with big rimmed drivers (Boss, Firebird) with big skips. Local rule: missed mandy - play where you lie (unless OB on or over the jogging trail) and add a 1 stroke penalty.
- Tee 4/13: FUN, FUN, FUN! Short, steeply downhill shots. Just a bit long on hole 4 gets you an OB penalty, as the top of the slope down to the creek is marked OB. If it's a day of Santa Ana winds from the east, (rather than the trade wind, on-shore wind from the west), it's easy to flatten out a drive and go OB on or across the jogging trail.
When playing hole 4, the big rocks circling hole 13, form an OB area (Lake Conejo). Local rule: play where you lie (in Lake Conejo) and add 1 stroke penalty. With a solid putt, you can save a par! With an aggressive off-line putt, you can go OB in the creek! :)
When playing hole 13 the rocks form an island (Coney Island) that you must land on or you are OB. Local rule: play where you lie and add a 1 stroke penalty. Again, a nice putt can save your par!
Tee 5/14: Very uphill drives! Don't miss the mandy to the left of the marked pole! If you do, the local rule is to play where you lie and add a 1 stroke penalty. The short position of hole 5 is more challenging than it's longer position, as it is close to a steep embankment. If you're drive is short, you'll have tough footing to go along with your very uphill putt. If you're long, your comeback putt can wiz on by and go way downhill!
Hole 14 is an awesome shot steeply uphill, around a nice pepper tree, and back down a steeply sloped fairway. Short drives, (most are!), give a challenging downhill approach, or a dangerous putt. The long position of 14 is a HUGE drive! But I've seen Wally Moore park it with a broken in KC Roc!
Tee 6/15: Singnature holes! Trade winds from the west can turn over your drive (and long 6 is a pump!) and put you OB in the creek that runs along the right side of the entire fairway. Lots of work has been done to thin things out to make errant drives into the creek area easier to find! There is a very large bush (pyracantha) that is OB adding more challenge. This is a beautiful fairway, half-bowl shaped. Hole 6 is a long throw with OB to the right, in the fairway (pyracantha), and just past the hole! Hole 15 requires your drive to navigate between the creek and the pyracantha!
Tee 7/16: This tee is near the creek (very scenic!) and requires drives to go a long way, uphill, riding a hyzer. Recently added trees and mulch piles have added very nice touches to the fairways.
- Tee 8/17: Hole 8 is a fun "dinker" with 4 pin placements on and around a big dirt mound named The Anthill. Lots of new trees have made the hole much better. Putts are challenging.
Hole 17 is also much better now with many new trees. Hole 17 is placed close enough to the edge of a ridge, that if your drive is long, you may go a considerable way downhill, leaving a long uphill putt.
Tee 9/18: Hole is a long drive around and over trees.
Hole 18 "The Anthill 2" has 3 pin positions on and around a large mound. New trees, and elevated putt make this a cool hole. Beware of turning over your drive into the adjacent school yard!

Cons:

Original tee signs not completely accurate, (but new ones are on the way, and they are promised to be very nice.)
Limited area, 10 acres.
Time needed for trees to mature.

Other Thoughts:

Not every course can be, or should be a Santa Cruz. Even that incredible course would get boring if every course were just like it.
Rabbit Flats is a very unique course maximizing FUN and CHALLENGE.
The CRPD (Conejo Recreation & Parks District) made a huge investment in this course and it has paid off!
It is awesome that they put in an extra 9 holes (red baskets) so kids and beginners could play along with experienced players!
Bring the whole family, wife, 1st timers...
This could be a model for courses in the future to get more people into the sport!
The CRPD continues to be involved on a weekly basis improving the course - spreading mulch, weeding, planting, building steps on steep trails, getting new tee signs, adding new hole locations...
Rabbit Flats will only get better and better over time. It's on it's way to a 5 disc rating! :)

My Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

What a beautiful morning it was today. A light breeze from the south, and warm enough to play in a T-Shirt. A few friendly groups of people were out playing. This is a perfect starter course, and has a few fun obstacles.

Cons:

Some of the dog owners don't clean up after their pets. :( The course was a little muddy and wet this morning to add to things that stick to your shoes.

Other Thoughts:

This course is still under construction. There were some new stairs on hole 5 going up the hill, and new trees and shrubbery being planted all over the course.
