The Sun Hasn't Set on Sunset 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Concrete tees have been added since all the other reviews were written. A few holes still tee off from the walking path, but most have concrete tees now (a couple seem kind of short, though). Good tee signs at each hole, and the baskets are Chainstars which are still in good shape.

Many holes here have tight, technical lines through the trunks of the large, mature trees. Holes range from sub 200 to 500 feet in length. There is also a good variety of left, straight, and right finishes. A couple holes are more open and allow a bomb while several are low-ceiling the whole way.

Cons:

The walking path that circles the perimeter of the park may cause momentary delays if you have to wait for a walker/jogger to get out of the way.

We usually come to Branson around Veteran's day, and massive amounts of leaves are on the ground then which can hide discs well.

The course is board flat and right next to Lake Taneycomo (doesn't come into play), and it holds water easily if the lake level rises. It was almost completely flooded when we came in 2019.

Other Thoughts:

The course is pretty beginner friendly, but I think it is most geared towards intermediate players. As an intermediate, Sunset is my favorite free course in the Branson area.

It is technically an 18 hole course, but there are only 9 baskets (which you play to twice). The first 7 baskets have distinctly different tees that definitely change how the hole plays. The last 2 baskets only have one tee each, so you have to play those twice.

Eh... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Baskets are in good shape
- Existence of tee signs

Cons:

- Mostly natural tee pads
- 2:1 tee-to-basket ratio
- Technically, it's an "18-hole" course but realism says it's a 9-hole course that you just have to play twice
- The difference in distance between the front/back nine tees is way off; there was one hole in particular where the back nine tee was literally 2 steps to the right but somehow the hole was lengthened by like 50ft
- Very close to the river so I've heard that it floods quite a bit
- Course fits very snugly within a walking/running trail

Other Thoughts:

- It's a disc golf course so it has that going for it. It's great for practicing at if you don't have time to drive out to Cedars Resort.

Get Off My Lawn! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The park has good, sturdy baskets. It was fairly well maintained.

Cons:

Mosquitoes EVERYWHERE!!!
SUPER precise shots are required.
The park is just across the street from a number of houses. Which is somewhat distracting when cars constantly drive by.

Other Thoughts:

I only got through the front 9 baskets before the mosquitoes got to be too much. The layout was a little confusing. Besides the bugs, the low hanging branches of the trees was the worst. There is no good way to avoid them. It was not my favorite park, but it was different.

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located in town for easy quick access on the east side of town
Shade over the whole course
Trees add challenge to an otherwise flat, simple course
Neighbors seemed nice which is important because their homes are across the street from half the holes and a stray shot can end up in their yards

Cons:

Pooling water in wet periods

Other Thoughts:

While this is listed as 18 holes, it's really 9 with separate tees. Smart use of limited space.

Pros:

Secluded
Quiet
Flat
Shaded

Cons:

Low-hanging trees
Mildly swampy.
Tee signs could use a bit more info (path behind basket, etc)

Other Thoughts:

Considering the course is geared for beginners, it's an excellent course.
Double tee-pads give options to change things up a bit.
Signs are nice with good information (could use a bit more)
Since there's only a walking path surrounding the course, there's very little time spent waiting for other users of the park.

Several of the trees are in need of trimming back.
Hole 1 has a less-than 5ft hole to throw through.
Baskets are nice.

A Good Warm-Up Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This course is located in a nice little peaceful park
- Nice baskets that are in great shape
- Tee signs at every hole
- Lots of trees make the course challenging
- Well maintained course
- Grass was cut well and looked nice
- Risk/ Reward shots and OB comes into play to make it a little more challenging
- Mix of lengths of holes.

Cons:

- NO ELEVATION at all. This is extremley weird for being located in Branson because it is so hilly. It would have been nice for a hole to be on the bluff for an extreme downhill shot.
- Grass teepads (exept for 8). It would have been nice to have concrete.
- The course was full of sand and after i played it, it was all in my shoes. I guess this sand is because of the lake that is nearby, but it did effect the course
- The park is really really small. it is a round robin kind of course. it makes a loop around the park and i was suprized that they were able to fit 9 holes into this course.
- When it is wet, the course doesnt drain well at all as there was some standing puddles when i played.
- All of the holes were straight up the middle and really werent challenging.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, it was a boring course. It really is just a good warmup course or a good place for a begginer. If you are in the Branson area, I would suggest to play the Treehouz course in Ridgedale, MO or you could play this course as a warm-up. This course is really just a check off the list course and i wont be coming back.

Boring 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is set in a really pretty area. Big cliffs directly against the course on your north and a lake to the south. I am amazed how they fit 9 baskets and 18 pads on this land as it is only 200 feet wide, yet very long. You will never lose your disc in the bluffs or in the water (which is very far away, you would only worry about the road which is hard to reach still).

Cons:

This course just drags on. For starters on the front nine the first four holes all go straight east, the 5th goes north, and the last four go straight west back to where you started. The same goes for the back nine as the 2nd set of pads are very close to the original pads, if not the same pad (how is that even considered a new hole?). While you have to keep your disc low, there isn't much variation in shot selection, especially since you are always going the same direction. It is hard to convince yourself to go back in another circle for the back nine. This is why I played the front and back at the same time.

Other Thoughts:

I am glad that Branson has this course, as it was an easy one to pick up on my way to Treehouz. However, I didnt want to spend too much time here as the course was dull. There are holes with good distance, but the overall shot variety was not great.

Easy to play, pretty park. Low trees force you to keep your throws low. Good practice course.

Cons:

Map is kinda hard to follow because of all the quick turns. Low trees make some shots hard for newbies.

Other Thoughts:

Lost a disc on 18. The woods are not thick but the undergrowth OB will eat your discs. Watch where they go.

Good use of the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very good use of the area given that it is probably not more than 300 feet wide at any spot.
Ive played tournaments there without many problems as far as fairways being too tight. But with a lot of newer players out there, it could be a different story.
Great place to utilize a roller shot.

Really close to The Journey Post disc golf shop.

Cons:

Prone to flooding. Not really a knock on the course itself but more the unfortunate location and its proximity to taneycomo.
Mostly natural teepads. Some are a little choppy, however locals have started a league and are going to start with workdays soon I think.

Other Thoughts:

There are established back 9 teepads.
There is a league there tuesday nights, singles, 2 divisions.

OK 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's in Branson, and this is the only course you can say that about. A couple of the holes have some challenge, and a couple more are legitimate ace opportunities. This is a quiet location and kind of scenic along the river, and the course makes pretty good use of really limited space.

Cons:

A LOT of shots require keeping your disc less than 6 feet off the ground. Nice practice for doing that, but it gets old and some otherwise nice holes are made less nice by it. The mix of tee types is confusing, the park is kind of hard to find, and some of the back nine tees are hard to find.

Other Thoughts:

I won't say the locals are rude, but. We arrived late in the afternoon hoping to get in a quick 18. There was a young family there, they were playing 3 when we started. Dad and 2 boys about 9 or 10 were playing, Mom was spectating. We passed when we were playing 3 and they 6, I said hi to Dad and he stuck his nose up and said NOTHING. None of the 3 of them would throw until the whole family was looking at them, and when Dad threw, he had to stand and look at the shot, make 5 or 6 false starts, then make his poor to average throw. We caught up to them on 12, they could easily have waited at 13 and let us play through, but didn't. There was no way we'd be able to finish before dark behind them, there was no way they were going to finish before dark, so we bailed. Disc'ers are usually so much more cool than that, but they acted like they were po'd that we were there, and we weren't drinking, cussing, or anything.

Good, not great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful park and very well maintained. The baskets are in good shape and there is relatively little traffic other than other disc golfers. Many of the young Cypress trees have low clearance making for challenging drives. Park is laid out well considering the small amount of land there is.

Cons:

There are only 9 baskets, having a different tee for each basket does help... but this is something that could definitely be improved upon. Many of the young Cypress trees have low clearance making for challenging drives (I listed this as pro and con).

Other Thoughts:

Additional holes to make a true 18 hole course would be nice... but I don't see how that would be possible in this area.

Early morning Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course solo for an early morning round on my vacation. The course was layed out nice considering the land to work with was cramped. The holes are very straightforward, but offer some challenge to the basic disc golfer. The course flows well, and follows a basic circle for the first 9 holes. I only played the front nine, and could see the course was set up for alternate tees to accommodate 18 holes.

The challenges are mainly dealing with some of the low ceilings on some of the tees, and make for a little challenge.

The course is well maintained, and the grass was cut.

The baskets were nice and showed little signs of wear.

There are some risk/reward shots, and OB comes into play a little. I actually managed too lose a disc in the rough.

Cons:

It's kinda boring, and offers little challenge. There aren't many tee pads, and the ground is slick and muddy in the mornings.

Other Thoughts:

This is a quaint little course in the middle of Branson...a place not known for it's DG. It does well with what it has, and offers a little get away from the fakeness of the town that its in.

Branson's Best? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

During the summer, this course presents some challenging window shots.

Lots of trees to make this course (especially the front nine) technically difficult.

Some holes (3 & 7) let you stretch it out a little more

Cons:

Very straight course 4 up, 1 across, 4 back

Pretty short course

Other Thoughts:

Branson is Missouri's tourism hotspot. I think that a place attracting that millions of people each year could do a little better than 9 holes of public golf. On the other hand, when I go to Branson, I make it a point to go to Sunset Park. I have now played 15+ rounds in my 2 most recent visits to Branson, and will probably put in a few more holes before I'm done!

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my home course. Always mowed and looking nice if now under water, we installed a paver t pad on 1. summer it is real tight making 4 or 5 down a great round, winter you can let loose because the trees arent so full, hole 3 and 7 are the longest holes 400 each 7 is a bird but 3 is a lot harder even at the same distance because you have to play around the trees plays more loke 450. Bathroom at park on other side of underpass by the playground.

Cons:

ok this is why the course is wet. the lake is only a few hundred feew away and the lake level is so close to the course level so when the lake level is up the water cant go anywhere. so it could not for weeks and holes 1 and 2 cand still have water sitting. and with the water the bugs are out in full force. so play early. the mountian side will eat your disc and make it impossible to find.

Other Thoughts:

This is the only park we have talked to the parks and recreation to build another but they say land is so scarce. they have a big 150 acre walking trail that could be the untimate Ozarks Disc Golf course but they refuse to let us put it in at no cost to them. So this 9 hole is all we get. will be adding alternate tee from the walking path w paint this winter. to make it 18 holes.

Nice park, right on the water with alot of trees....someone has written on the tee markers and you could make 18 out of it, although you have to make up your own tees. there is a cliff along the right side of the course so if you did throw it up there its pretty easy to find

Cons:

O.B on ever hole, very hard to get there..you have to go through everyones backyard...no tee boxes...very muddy of what is there, all shots are throw the trees and if you cant throw lower than 4 feet go ahead and add 10 to your score...no evaluation change. nothing that makes you say wow...good practice for low shots though

Other Thoughts:

the 1st hole is on the far end of the park..so keep driving all the way to the parking lot it will e on your right about 900 ft down from the entrance.

Holes well marked with excellent tee signs. Landscape is beautifully manicured, with a beautiful mix of Oak and Cypress.

Cons:

Holes 1-3 tee boxes and baskets under a few inches of water at my visit. These holes have Cypress trees with very low limbs, making long drives difficult.

Very easy to navigate arund if you can find the course. Can easily be played in thirty minutes while your signifigant other shops at the near by outlet malls.

Cons:

Hole one had a brick teepad the rest were all grass/dirt except hole 8 where you throw from a painted square on the pavement of some playground equipment. Nothing too challenging, same shots around and through trees just different distances. This course could be so much better with the use of the surrounding land mostly the woods near the bridge and the area at the base of the rock wall.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 8 was the most unique hole as it throws from a paved teepad to a blind shot at the base of the rock wall if only there could be 3 more of these holes it would be worth going out to a lot. Also alt. tees would be good for an 18 hole layout. With all of the elevation around branson why isnt there a better playing course in the area.
