If you want an epic light box, find an old overhead projector like the ones they used to use in grade school. They're cheap and you can pull the mirror off for a perfect light box.
With Brainwave's mastery of mixing some of the most vibrant colors ever seen dyed on a disc,a set of these bad boys, and a potter's wheel / old record player / lazy Susan, I could see how he could pull off that in minutes.

I've done a ton of work with contact paper and never had any issues like that. What kind of dye do you use? Sounds like you might be a bit too hot on your dip.
