Pros:
TLDR:
A demanding, well-crafted course. Rugged features and lots of character even if somewhat lacking in finery and genteel manners. Unforgiving terrain. Varied design. With improved signage and perhaps some alt tees, this might be the best course in the area.
* This is a challenging course, definitely a notch harder than any other I've played in the region. For some that will be a con, but I think an adventurous intermediate player or above would be fine. Bring water and extra discs. Consider bug spray. Grit your teeth.
* Really strong layout. Solid mix of distances, elevation changes, doglegs and S-curves, tight vs open, etc. Just when I didn't think I could bear another big-arm battle, the course took mercy with a short technical skirmish.
* Despite the difficulty, course felt very fair. There was always at least one clear line (sometimes more) and mowed fairways or safety zones.
* Nice risk:reward over water on #3.
* Overlooking the parking lot, great risk:reward on #5 with a compass-rose-emblazened teepad and wide curving fairway vs a chance to chord over a sloping rough, finishing with an elevated green.
* Beatify the person who put the (only?) bench before tee 8. Climbing here in 95 degree heat deserves a much need rest.
* Bone-chilling downhill drop on #18. A classic finish.
* Looks like multiple basket positions are present, but don't hold me to it.
* A few garbage cans and a restroom in the parking lot.
Cons:
* A sign in the parking lot warns that it isn't beginner friendly and requires some endurance, both of which you should take seriously. There are steep uphills and plenty of thorny trudges. Leave the family at home and wrestle with your demons alone in the woods.
* Navigation was often a bit unclear, despite occasional arrows. A few marker flags and tee frames threw me off. Route from #13 to #14 is a good example of a long walk without reassurance. I expect this will be fixed as the course develops. Meanwhile, use the online map.
* Could use better signs at each teepad. Probably already planned.
* The rough is hateful (I could tell it had a personal grudge against me) and in places very tall and dense. Burrs, thorns, thickets, spider webs, etc. I lost a disc and odds are you will too!
* 9, 12 and 13 felt a little samey. These are short holes playing through tight regular rows of replanted trees. It is hard to make interesting holes with this configuration. They aren't bad per se, just slightly repetitive.
* A single teepad option at each hole currently. It looked like work had perhaps begun on a second set.
* Unclear if there was a path from the #18 tee to the green down below. The route I took felt very unsafe.
* No amenities other than the restroom and trash cans. I'd especially like to see a bullitin board with a full course map once the layout is fully finalized. Some more benches or stump-seats wouldn't hurt.
Other Thoughts:
* As of 9/30/2019 this course still has signage and a description declaring it a work in progress, but since the course is quite playable (and quite good!) while lacking a review, I decied to stray from my typically passive site consumption and contribute.
* I played as a stranger passing through, with the park completely empty and nature's oven set to broil. Initially parked a park away. Lost a disc. Lost my way. Found half a dozen types of burrs. Had a blast!
* Mysterious red basket after #14. Will there one day be more than 18 holes?
