An Epic Location Has a Second Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Although this course is a couple years old, it hadn't been added to DGCR yet, so I just took care of that. Many people are aware of the original course at Base Camp, but now there are two!

This course features the same epic, mars-like terrain as the original although not as many signature holes. Since the land available for the second course didn't have quite as much to work with, the designers made it a little more technical. There are a couple baskets on the edge of hills, a guardian tree, etc. This course doesn't have turf tee pads like the original, but I didn't have any grip issues with throwing off the rock/dirt pads. This course is amazing and only feels like a step down because the original is so incredible.

The owner of the lodge is very kind, and will explain the courses to you when you arrive. You can also fill up your water bottles and use the bathroom at the lodge. Make sure to say hi to his 200lb pet tortoise!

Cons:

This course is not as well marked as the original. Between the map and other people's footsteps (it hadn't rained in awhile) I was able to find all the pads without too much trouble, but I hope they are able to add better signage in the future.

The terrain will tear up your discs. The course is so amazing that it's worth it, but be aware. You may want to pull out your second string discs for this course.

Not a fault of the course, but it must be ridiculously hot to play here in the summer. I played in November with 60 degree temps and I was quite warm with all the hiking. Bring lots of water and some snacks as well.

Unfortunately, the road to Base Camp Adventure Lodge will make it inaccessible for some. The road really isn't that bad if you have the right vehicle, but most sedan owners can't afford to rent a Jeep just to play a couple rounds of disc golf. I had no problems making it in a Suburban, but I can't imagine driving most cars back there.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely worth the $5 to play especially if you've already made the drive to play the original Base Camp course. In fact, you may want to play this one first, so the original doesn't spoil how amazing this course is also. They are not the most difficult courses, although they are challenging, but they are pure joy to play. There are only a handful of truly unique disc golf courses in the world, and these two qualify.
