Spider House Pitch and Putt

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Private Property but free to play. Don't let the name "Beacon Lake" fool you, as there is no lake and the course is just a roughly 2 acre front lawn in front of Spider House Disc Golf headquarters. This is a pure putter course with most holes varying in the low 100 ft range. Just enough tall mature hardwoods to create a couple angles that would be great for children and brand new players who want a quick easy round while checking out Spider House Discs.

AMENITIES: Very little in the way of on site amenities as it is a private home. Small gravel parking lot, no bathrooms or water available. Spider House mobile disc bus is usually on site though if you want to pick up some plastic. Dog friendly, Extremely Cart friendly, super fast play through.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS: No course sign, no tee signs (as I imagine mowing around them in your front yard would get monotonous and tedious maybe). Had to utilize U-Disc to navigate, but was simple enough. Tees are turf in great shape and look relatively new. No complaints are you really don't need a run-up on any of the holes on the property. Baskets are Blue DiscGolfPark Pros which are on the cheaper end but still caught fine.

DESIGN: Not a lot to say here above the designer did everything they could to put 9 holes in about 2 acres worth of front yard space and make it fun with some variety. The trees and natural OB (sidewalks, roads, driveway, house, fence-line) keep you honest to an extent and help mix up the shot shapes some. Obviously not meant for a competitive round and does not target anyone except the absolute beginner and smaller children. Could be a fun little night glow ace run course.

EXTRAS: The property is immaculately maintained, as it is the owner's home. And despite rating this course low, it is well done for what it is and who it targets. Extremely quick play if you are in the area and want to bag a course.

Cons:

NO TEE SIGNS: Not sure if this is a seasonal thing or just a convienence for mowing thing, but it made navigation without a course map difficult.

PITCH AND PUTT: This course falls below what I would normally call a pitch and putt and is just barely above a Tiki course in distances. Without the trees and forced shapes you could get away with jump putting every hole.

NO ROOM TO EXPAND OR IMPROVE: What you see if what you get, the course uses all the available land to its best ability and sadly has no where to expand to and little if any ways to improve itself to be more than it currently is.

NO REAL CHALLENGE: Unless you challenge yourself to Ace every hole, this course offers little in terms of challenge. Again not a knock on the design, but the limited space doesn't allow for much more.

Other Thoughts:

This course was hard to rate honestly, as it does what it intends to do pretty well. However, only the newest of players, small children, and the most hardcore baggers will consider visiting this place. Could be extremely fun as a glow round ace race or to take your small children to though.
