REWRITING FOR THE UPDATED COURSE, APRIL 2022
Bogue Chitto State Park is on some hilly forest land between New Orleans and Mississippi. If Louisiana is a boot, this course is in the top of the foot. It's 18 holes through moderate woods with an underbrush of thorny plants (blackberry and greenbriar from what I could tell) that only rises about 3-4' off the ground. Since the recent clearing, the underbrush has been mostly tamed though, and the park staff is doing a great job of keeping it low.

The design of this course has moved to a 2-tee/2-basket layout, and spread over some new areas of the park. the use of elevation is still a prominent feature of the course, and some of the only elevation in this part of Louisiana. Some of I think the best uses of it are gone in the redesign, but that couldn't really be helped

The course design is about on the same level as the previous layout, but instead of a mix of long and short holes, the different layouts offer each a mix of long or short holes, primarily on the longer side. If you're a new player, the short tees to short baskets still can be a little long on the back 9.

The tees and baskets themselves are top of the line, excellent. New baskets, great signs. I think Hole 7 is the only one that doesn't live up to the rest, as the long basket looks like it's moved a bit (for the better, i think), and the 7 long tee is pretty slick (I don't think it got brushed) but you can throw from next to the tee for no real difference.

Navigation can be tricky at times when you move from one section to another, across the road or on a trail through the woods. But the map will help out. The field by the parking lot can be a little hard to keep track of where each tees and baskets are, with all the underbrush gone the fairways are very open, and the length of the holes in the elevation can trick you. Of course, this comes from a navigational idiot, so you may be just fine.

The cons are about the same as the previous layouts- long holes in tight fairways. But this layout is not as bad as when it was a 9 hole 500ft/hole course. There are still some luck-shots on the longer holes, but you are not punished as harshly now that the undergrowth is cleared. I mainly put this section in the cons because when throwing through the woods, you really need a clear and distinct fairway that only comes on a few holes, rather than "there's fewer trees if I throw this way." It's not every hole, but it's about 1/3 that, a little "how is this angle supposed to work?" and some that just seem gratuitous in length.

You still have to throw near some horse and biking trails a few times, and a road, so be careful with the hazards. An errant throw could put someone at risk, and a kick could put you deep into biking trail territory.

These aren't really huge cons though, and compared to my previous cons section, this is hardly anything.

If given the option (in a perfect universe where the mountain bike paths never exist) I might choose to go back to the previous layout, but this is not one I'm complaining about this one. It's well worth $3 and much easier to play with a group of players of different skills.

I am so thrilled to have three courses about 30 minutes from me that offer exciting challenges, great terrain, and a beautiful place to play. Out of Solomon Center, Bogue Chitto, and Pelican Park, this is the best course. Huge shoutout to Mike Kernan who did a lot of the work on getting this course installed, and working with the park staff to get a course that's well-installed and well-maintained.
