Awesome Beginner Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

DisCatchers are in decent shape, still catching well

Relatively easy to navigate as many of the holes are on the short side, though the first time out you may want the map because it can get a tad confusing..

18 finishes relatively close to the parking lot.

Decent variety of hole types- you've got wooded and open shots, plus water comes into play on 12 and then, if you shank it, on 18.

Scenic. With decent weather it's a very enjoyable walk through the woods, around a lake and across the grounds. Grass was cut the day I played.

Tee signs are simple with no map but do have distances listed. There is also the occasional next tee sign.

Cons:

Not a great range of distances. the longest is approx. 330 and the shortest is 130. In fact, the course is overall on the short side with 4 holes under 200' and only 4 over 250'.

Availability could be an issue. In addition to having odd hours I have the feeling that when there are functions going on many of the holes are unplayable.

Natural tees, though apparently the course doesn't get used terribly often. The familiar dirt patches haven't been worn into the ground yet and the course was established 3 years ago. From that alone it seems the course doesn't see a lot of action.

Only non-scout facility I saw was a port-o-john outside of the check-in building.

Other Thoughts:

As alluded to in other reviews it can get kinda confusing your first time here. After you've driven a ways on SR 19 and then take the left on Camp Binachi rd, you wind your way to an intersection that has a sign pointing you to the camp. The problem is that it looks like it's telling you to go left, when in fact you should head straight ahead. when you get to the main gate with the classic arched "Camp Binachi" overhead, take a right, past the house to the shooting range/ranger station. It's a dirt road and then you get to a chain link fence on your left. If no one is there they have signs w/ phone numbers for you to call. After check in you have to double-back to the main gate and proceed into the camp-proper. Tee 1 is right against the edge of the parking lot you'll find on the right, before the main camp buildings.

My overall impression of Camp Binachi is that it's a great course for introducing the sport to young people (scouts) and a nice walk in the woods. Very scenic - worth the short detour if you're passing through Meridian (way more fun than Highland Park, and less sketchy) or, on the way to Mobile; still, I wouldn't go far out of my way for it specifically. The holes are short yet challenging to a newbie. A fair mix of open and slightly wooded. That said, veterans may find themselves underwhelmed.

Pros:

They just put in new tee signs and signs to the next hole which were needed. Never crowded. Nice mix of open and woods with water in play on one hole and a good bit of elevation change. Bathroom at 1st tee. Nice scenery

Cons:

Course is not maintained well. Grass was very high the last 2 times I played there and weeds were growing up into a basket. You have to pay to play which is ok but where you pay is not where the courses is. you have to drive there and back. Biggest con is that the course is not open very often. It's located in a Boy Scout camp. It is only open 2 pm til dark on thursday, friday, and sunday and 9 am til dark saturday. They also are closed sometimes without really any warning. I have driven out there and not been able to play.

Other Thoughts:

I really really like this course. I play there as often as I can. If they maintained it a little better and it was open all the time I would give it a 4 but I felt like I had to take off for the limited hours. This course is worth the trip especially if you like shorter more technical courses.

Pros:

-Well maintained course
-Boy Scout camp so it is a safe environment
-Good use of terrain
-Nice new baskets
-Mix of open and wooded holes
-Some elevation holes
-Some technical shots
- At least 1 water shot but possibly 2 depending on the pin placement of 1 of the holes.

Cons:

-Some could consider it too short

Other Thoughts:

We were out on the grand opening weekend and had a great time. This brand new course is a great addition to the area. The scouts were very nice and guided us on the course. I could see where some might have difficulties in navigation if a guide were not present especially the transition from hole 4 to 5 which is down a path that starts in the woods on the fairway of hole 4.

The first 4 holes play through mature pines with limited chance of rough. After that there are a couple of wooded shots then back to a semi open area with mature pines. On the back 9 there is a short water shot but it should not be a problem for most. Then it is back to some wooded shots before ending at 18 which tees from the levee to the hole on a small hill.

We had a great time at this course and it is worth playing if in the area. I imagine it will be maintained on a regular basis as it is at the camp which is a huge plus.

Be sure to bring your own water as I do not recall seeing a place to get water on the course.

There is a $2 fee to play this course which is well worth it.

If someone is available be sure to pick up the course disc while there to support this course.

We will defiantly be back to play this one.

Pros:

- Course is brand new and in excellent shape
- Plenty of places to sit down
- Fun, easy holes

Cons:

- No signage about where the next tee is
- No trash cans
- Not very challenging
- No holes longer than about 200 feet

Other Thoughts:

I thought the course was fun and easy. The holes are very short though and there isn't really anywhere to really throw for distance. All in all its a very enjoyable course.
