Birdies Fly at Colts Neck High 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 9, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ The course doesn't intrude too badly on other sports fields. It skirts around a lacrosse field and just brushes up against a baseball foul line, but that's it.
+ Next hole signs prominently displayed on all baskets.
+ Flat and sturdy tee pads made of concrete pavers. (Though, someone needs to tell the groundskeeper/custodian to use a weedwhacker on them once in awhile!)
+ (Update 15-July-2021) Tee signs are clear and informative with brand new painted pine backings to replace the previously disintegrating ones.

Cons:

-/+ Nothing longer than 250 feet.
- Mostly wide open and wholly flat.

Other Thoughts:

Hole4 was the nicest to look at because the school and roads are at your back, and all you see are trees and the corner of a field. Hole7 was my favorite to play because it presents an actual mini tunnel to deal with. My least favorite was hole3 because of how straight, flat and wide open it is.

I always feel weird reviewing high school courses because I know in the back of my mind that almost every criticism I could make can be met with the reply, "Well, it's a 9-hole course at a high school. What were you expecting?" Take hole3, for example. There is nothing to it but distance in a field. But, this is a high school course. For most students here, it could be their very first encounter with a disc golf course. So it would be unwise to overwhelm them with distance, right? I didn't find it particularly engaging, but the fresh newbie could find it intimidating.

Then again, the only point of view I can be sure of is my own. And I'm sure that this course and the many other high school courses popping up all over New Jersey will end up having a net positive effect on the future of disc golf in NJ. A student who is no good at basketball, baseball, football, tennis or track & field could finally find their calling once they hear those chains for the first time. No amount of criticisms in the world could negatively impact that reality. We are the most densely populated state in the whole country. A future champion is bound to be in one of our high schools right now...!

Having said all of that, I'll continue with my boring review.
It's not all just empty fields. Actually, holes 6 through 9 made me raise an eyebrow out of intrigue because those four involved tree usage in one way or another- a rarity among high school disc golf courses! Special mention of hole7 for being a well crafted "my very first tunnel shot" hole. I couldn't resist taking multiple shots going for that Cubby Ace. (None yet!)

But, yes, it is a high school course, which means that the real estate is small to begin with. What chunk of land that's allocated to the disc golf course is open fields that appear rarely used. So, it's brief, largely flat and direct with very little to stick in my memory.
Let me reiterate, though, that the course at Colts Neck High School is a net positive for the sport and all who play it. As high school courses go, it's good. If you live nearby and just want a low-pressure and quiet round that you can play over and over again, come to Colts Neck High.

Growing the Sport in High School 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Yes, it's short and open. But there are things for the intermediate player (or the dad playing with kids) to enjoy here:

Hole #4 has on OB fence line all along the right side. It's a full-height cyclone fence, and it's maybe only 6 feet to the right of the tee. Straight shot? RHFH? Or an overstable disc out over the OB the entire way, with confidence that it will come back? You're here to practice: why not try all three?

Hole #7 is a super short ace run through a narrow gap in a stand of trees. The basket is positioned just slightly enough to the right of the line so it doesn't allow for any fade. Gotta know how to throw straight - and with enough force that risks going long.

Hole #9 has a line of smallish trees, the last one protecting the basket. RHFH? Spike hyzer that will crash through the last tree pin high?

+ Easy to create a safari layout with longer holes

Cons:

- If you take this for what it is (a well organized 9 around open athletic fields that can be used to refine skills), there are no cons other than restricted hours due to school

Other Thoughts:

~ A shout out to the two credited designers, who both do a lot for the sport in New Jersey. And credit to the school for investing funds in disc golf.

~ Colts Neck lacks the topography of some other better NJ high school layouts, so the designers had less to work with. Nonetheless, they created a good layout that encourages play; they put in tees, baskets and excellent signs

~ We're bringing up the next generation of players, some of whom will design courses, become volunteers, and help other NJ towns put in courses in the years to come

Getting the Sport in the High Schools!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 15, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Brand new permanent 9 hole course located on the nicely groomed property of Colts Neck High School. Innova Discatcher baskets with standout blue rims are at each hole along with sufficient 3'x 8' tee pads comprised of 1'x1' paver blocks. Though navigation is intuitive, wooden "next tee" signs help guide players around the course. Professional grade tee signs are affixed to 4'x 6' painted posts near each pad and depict hole number, par, distance and a map of the shot. The small bit of elevation on the property is incorporated into the layout, as is a short tunnel shot "ace run" which will appeal to students. At least five of the holes could be extended with temporary tee flags to allow for greater distance.

Cons:

The course is short and will not present sufficient challenge for the advanced disc golfer. As the course is primarily open, there's not much opportunity to shape shots. Public play is limited to non-school hours, and as the course intertwines with existing sports fields, play is not possible during athletic practices or games.

Other Thoughts:

Colts Neck High School becomes the 6th NJ high school to have a permanent course on its grounds and is the latest effort by the Jersey Shore Disc Golf Club to incorporate the sport into the state Physical Education curriculum, offering a safe, enjoyable activity for students. Thanks and appreciation are given to the Colts Neck HS Administration for embracing this initiative and to the many others who contributed to the project.

As with any high school course, the layout was designed so the average student can achieve success and to allow an instructor to adequately supervise PE classes. Seasoned players are asked to consider these variables when playing and/or rating the course.

The Colts Neck HS course is a fun little play and an ideal place for kids to learn the sport before tackling a more challenging 18 hole venue.
