Sugar Hollow's Training Wheels 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This is a nice little nine hole course in a recreation center. I think this course could inspire the kids in after school programs to learn more about the game and if they get hooked, they could start to see the joy disc golf can bring. Sugar Hollow isn't too far, so I think if the kids (or counselors) enjoy this course enough they may be interested in seeing what the average challenge looks like.

-This course has a decent amount of elevation. Hole two has you throwing up on the side of a hill. Lefties will likely struggle more than right handed backhand throwers because the hill is in play the entire way and steeply declines on the right side. Yet, backhanders could simply catch a roller. Hole 5 has the highest degree of elevation. Very close to the 40' mark. This is a hole I thoroughly enjoyed here. Long way downhill over a tree. All in all, a simple little hole but very enjoyable. #8's wooded green on the ridge was nice too.

-For all skaters, there is a skate park. Beside the fence, there was a stone statue of a stakeboarder. Always cool to see a piece of art on a disc golf course. You'll need a membership or daypass to use the skate park or pool, but the option to join or pay a small fee for the day is really nice. Many places you can't get into without a full membership.

-Latitude 64 baskets. Very cool and shiny! This is actually the first course I've ever played with Latitude baskets. They will take some adjusting to because they aren't disc catchers, but overall they are good baskets.

-Nice tee signs and tee pads. You can really see the effort they put in to this course.

Cons:

-The previous reviewer mentioned #1. I do agree. It's too short and bland. However, I do think it could be a good goal setter for the starters. It's a hole you want to be able to birdie before you play courses that are a little more difficult. However, for starters, this course could be considered to be a little disjointed when you start off with a 115' footer and then play a difficult 280' that's uphill on the side of a hill and with the road in play the entire way. Not that #2 is a bad hole, it's just a bit confusing to see such an easy hole for starters and then see a hole that's hard enough even for pros to birdie on a regular basis. Par is a good score on #2.

-#4's tree limbs are too low and make it very oddly hard to reach a 165' footer. I think it just needs a little maintenance time after time. Nothing big, just maybe some limbs cut here and there. There were some on #8 too.

-#9's gaps are pretty weird. Hole is very birdieable, but a finesse shot will likely lead you to bark. There are essentially two gaps very close to each other that you need to hit in order to get out of the woods. Fair hole and all, but not as fun as it could be considering it's downhill and out of the woods.

Other Thoughts:

-This nine holer is decent but probably won't wow you overall. Hole five might be really fun for you to throw a few shots down the steep hill since it's nearly 40' below the pad (I paced it off right at 37' down). It was enjoyable for me and was easily my favorite hole here. This is a nice practice course that I'd recommend if you are driving through the area to play somewhere els. And if you like to play disc golf and skate, then I'd recommend a nice stop here if you live maybe within 40 miles.

-Pretty basic course overall with a few brighter moments to it.

short but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

well kept up, some fun up and down hills, intelligent use of the fringes of the property for maximum terrain interest, a couple really fun big downhill drives, an "other side of the road" tee box that feels different and interesting

Cons:

very small property, some holes are super short (like #1) and feel more like a warmup, and you are often staring at the building and playground and skatepark, walking around a big open multi-use field--the sense of hiking in nature is not present most of the time like the majority of courses... also have to watch out for hikers and other people using the property, though there are signs posted to inform people to watch out for discs

Other Thoughts:

note: after school programs use the playground and field, so depending on time of day there may be a lot of kids around, and potentially using the non-disc golf part of the fields for kickball
