Meh course in a beautiful city park. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Heritage Park is a 9 hole, very open medium length (for a niner) course in a beautiful city park setting, with surprisingly nice amenities. The setting is great, there are two pretty nice downhill bomber shots, a couple uphill shots (all open field), and two relatively short water carries (good for those needing confidence in those sorts of shots). It's not the shortest course out there, but it is a fun play. Wind can definitely affect most shots since it is so open.
Honestly, I am giving this course one extra half star just for the setting and amenities, and another extra half star for hole #1 and the two bomber holes (not epic bombs but still fun) and the two short water carries. Doing the math, the rest of the course is pretty much a 1.5 star open field course.

PROS:

>Very scenic, well maintained park.
>Couple nice shorter water carries over a very pleasant pond.
>Couple nice hilltop shots--pure grip and rip. No trees or O/B to worry about.
>Bathrooms, course map, very good quality teepads and baskets.
.

Cons:

.
>Very open course overall, other than hole 1, almost zero trees come into play. There are some on nine, but they line the left side sidewalk, which is O/B, and fairly easy to avoid.
>Because of the field nature, there is almost no shot variety.
>Somewhat out of the way, but that is not the course's fault, just mentioning it here.
>Other than hole 2, one really needs 250' or more accurate distance to have any chance at birdies, so brand new players need to be patient on this course, and just enjoy the scenery.

Other Thoughts:

.
BASICS:

>Teepads--Concrete, medium length, very nice condition. This appears to be a very new installation.
>Baskets--Dynamic Patriots, very good condition.
># holes--9. One teepad, one basket per hole.
>Setting--A very picturesque and beautifully maintained city of Versailles park. The entire park gets mowed frequently.
>Elevation--There is one hill in the middle (maybe 30-40'?), but two holes play up on it, and two tee off from it, so the course makes the most of its slight elevation.
>Distance of holes--190' or so to 480' or so, most in the 225' to 300' range.
>Free/pay to play, type of course--Free city park.
>Ease of getting to--Easy, right in town, though it is noted there is not much surrounding this town. It is about 30 minutes from Greenville and Piqua, the closest towns with much of anything.

AMENITIES:

>Parking--Ample, right by hole #1.
>Bathrooms--Yes, flush toilets.
>Water/food nearby--Not much in town, but there are C-stores and a Subway and some local places.
>Clubhouse/disc shop--No.
>Benches--No, but none really needed.
>Trash cans--Couple in the park.
>Bag holders--No
>Tee signs--Yes, distance only, but all baskets are easily visible from tees.
>Next tee direction/signs--No, but there is a nice course map at hole #1.
>Wheelchair/cart friendly--No-the one hill is a no go, and 4 holes use it. Quite cart friendly though.

COURSE PLAY:

>Shot variety--Hole 1 is nice, with several trees forcing you to choose a particular line and be fairly true to it. The other 8 holes frankly can be played with a straight throw or slight hyzer fades, only of different distances. They are almost entirely devoid of trees.
>Layout, long walks (inc back to car), loops--One pleasant loop.
>Total distance walked--0.9 miles
>Ease of finding next tee--Easy if you snapped a pic of the course map, fairly easy still if not. Course generally plays counter-clockwise around the park.
>General difficulty--Other than the distance, quite easy, with no real shot shaping needed except hole 1.
>Mud/water issues--No.
>Water or O/B to contend with--Holes #2 and #3 play across a small pond. The carries are short--150' or so for #2, and 225' or so on #3, so it can provide some water confidence to rec level players.
>Difficult rough/lost disc risk--No rough whatsoever, the pond could eat a disc on hole 3 especially, higher chance if it is windy.
>Scrape/scratch risk--Zero.
>How busy was course/park--Course was empty, several people were using the path that meanders through the park. As that path comes into play on several holes, care should be taken that the 'coast is clear'. Also, #6 plays near a new construction house on the right, and it would not take too much of a grip lock to find one of those new $1,000 windows.

OVERALL:

>Fun/enjoyment factor, would I play again? If in the area, yes, mostly because of the beauty of the park and the downhill shots.
>Who will this course challenge? Rec players and beginners. 900 and up will not find much to challenge them, except the one long hole, and that is a longer downhill par 4, so eagle is possible for someone with good distance.
>Is it worth a drive? 30-45 minutes maybe.
>Anything unique? The shorter water carries were nice, do not see that too often.
>Would be a half star higher with--Bigger shot variety, but with course being mostly an open field, I understand there is not much more that could be done. Kudos to the local folks for putting this course in, I think they did a great job with what the land offered them.

I am in my 50s, 80 or so courses played, 875ish.
