Baton Rouge Ares Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Highland Road Park is a multi use park with lots of tennis , a great playground for the kids, and an 18 hole disc golf course . The bathrooms are in the rec center . There are plenty of places to park .
THE EQUIPMENT - There is 1 tee per hole , but it is cement , large at 10' X 5' , and has a decorative bricking in the back edge . The signage is top notch . It has the hole # , distance , par and flight path for both . There are 2 baskets for every hole . They are color coded Discatchers . Purple for the short position and yellow for the longs . All are in very good shape . There are nice bridges where needed , and benches at every hole . Everything here is first class .
THE TERRAIN - This park was mowed and landscaped when I was here . A lot of work goes into this park style course . Course designer Daniel Boutte did a good job designing this course . There are rolling hills , ascending brick enforcements in front of some of the holes , creeks come into play several times during your round . Low hanging trees come into play at times . There are a couple of elevated baskets to increase difficulty . There are tight but fair door shots , some woods holes on #11- #14 across the street . Good basket placements .
THE HIGHLIGHTS - There are going to be opinions on the best holes because they can vary so much . #1 starts you off with a doorway shot over a gulley , to a basket 427' and to the right ( longs ) . This is a great opening hole . #4 is yet another gulley shot ( 530' longs , 302 short ) This one has a creek halfway through it . The basket sits with a brick wall guarding the front . #9 is a fun hole , only 281' from the longs , to an elevated basket . #10 is one of the more brutal holes . 505' from the shorts and 726' from the longs . The basket sits to the left of the trees and woods area , and will open up slightly for you to throw downhill , then back up to the green . #14 follows a creek on your right ( 364' short , 605' longs . #18 is a nice finishing hole . You throw to a hill that starts to rise all the way to the basket . The short basket is 339' , but you want to attack the long pin , because it has rungs of brick walls guarding the front of the basket . This is a great finisher .
THE TIME - The course plays long ( 7451' from the longs ) and it even feels longer when you are out on this course . It is also very crowded . I played it on a Tuesday evening and it was packed with players of all skill levels . I played it in a little over 80 minutes ( I will also explain in cons ) . If you are a local foursome or somehow get ahold of a map ( none online ) you will take over 2 hours to complete .
DISC RISK - You can fish your shots out of most parts of the creek if you see where it went in . The park is in such great condition , you have so few other places to lose one , except maybe in a low hanging tree . Disc Risk is moderately low .
Being that this course is a gem , this makes it a popular place to play .Allot time to get through a round if you are coming out , especially on the weekends . The fun factor , with it's 2 basket positions is very high . Check the course page fr tournaments or league play , too .

Cons:

This is a short list .
#1 Safety . The course is spread out and stays away from most of the other park activities . There may be a time where you have to hold up for a dog walker , or a couple getting some exercise by walking the bridges and paths . A couple of spots have fairways that come a bit close , and since you have to unload your drive on these long holes , an errant throw could result in someone getting hit .
#2 NAVIGATION - This course flows okay , but there are times where you have no idea where to go , and since you have no online map to print , if you have nobody in front of you , you may have to walk around . Hole 4-5 is a good example . The 5 tee pad is over the hill from the 4 basket . the #10 basket to the #11 tee is a joke . You have to take steps down and to the left of the long basket #10 , and cross the street to the woods hole . NEXT TEE signs will go a long way to making non locals happy .
RAIN -If it rains in this area , parts of the course will hold water . Wear waterproof shoes if coming out. Mud can be an issue .

Other Thoughts:

There was a lot of effort , money and time put into making this course happen . I wouldn't mark this as a destination course , but it IS a must play if in the Baton Rouge - New Orleans area
You can't go wrong with this large tee pad - 2 basket system . It allows better players to play with less experienced players for each hole . Add Next Tee signs , and there is nothing to complain about l Big Mike's in Denham Springs , not far away is a good place to get a bite to eat before or after your round .
MY RECOMMENDAION - Even the shorter purple baskets can still be a challenge for most . Pretty tough course for an after dinner family challenge , but great for newbies , 1 discers , casuals , locals and intermediates . There is enough here to keep the pros interested , too . Travelers will love playing on this well kept course . Course baggers will have a slow play , but will add a notch to their plays of good courses .You can also bag Community Bible ( 9 ) , ST Andrews , and Broadmoor in the same day . The Recommendation is obvious . Anywhere in the southeast of Louisiana " PLAY IT " !!!!

Deservedly popular course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 3, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a redesign so much, or seen so much work put into not just redesigning, but truly improving the course. It's been a while now, but the past year plus has seen continual improvements to the landscaping.

The design is spacious fairways, lengthy holes mixed with short ace runs, making good use of the elevation around the large park. No fairway is too tight, and the most open fairways are the longest so while you have ample room to rip it, I wouldn't say they are wide open. There's always a creek, cluster of trees, or both to offer a challenge.

The tees are full size concrete, and signs are beautiful, informative maps with lines drawn. This is amazing because you can't always see the basket from the tee. If you're playing to the yellow baskets, you probably won't see most of the baskets. But you can get a good idea of where they are in reference to the purple one you can see.

Probably the best part of this redesign is how on almost every hole, the baskets both seem to make good holes, rather than a hole designed with one placement in mind, and another just fitted in. The purple baskets are pretty accessible for newer players, and the yellow- excuse me- GOLD baskets (for LSU purple and gold), are much more challenging (but not out of reach). I'm normally not a fan of the two baskets instead of two tees, but on this course, it has been done well.

Cons:

The cons are few, but significant. The probably worse one is the few overlapping fairways. Without mandos (which I don't want them to put in), there are a couple times you have to walk back up another fairway, or two holes throw up the same fairway (especially if you take a forehand line). Because the park is usually pretty crowded, you may have to wait, or at least keep your head up as you walk around.

The other one is how extremely muddy parts of this course get. Some baskets were just placed in the lowest, most holding-waterest parts of the park. I don't know if it's always like that or if it just happens to be bad when I'm there, but even if you have water proof shoes you'll probably get wet feet.

Other Thoughts:

This course has been pretty busy every time I go, and deservedly so. It has something to offer newer players and pros alike. I don't mind driving an hour or so every once in a while to play this course on a good day, and would play it often if I was local!

Could have been even better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+Excellent tee pads, each one 14 feet long and grippy
+2 Innova Pro 28 baskets on each hole
+Gold course is excellent, near- championship caliber layout
+Elevation changes on several holes, although the terrain used is not even close to its full potential
+Nice bench on every tee

Cons:

-Course design is sub-par. Hills are not used to their full, fun potential. Could have been a really fun course with lots of potential downhill holes, but the designer consistently preferred flat holes over up and down fairways. In an area of the state with so little hills, the decent-sized hills on the terrain of this course are embarrassingly underutilized. This course could have been a 5-star course but there's too many missed opportunities for fun downhill holes (did I say that enough times?).
-Purple (short tee) course is weak, with ridiculously long walks in between most holes. Don't even bother playing the purple course.

Other Thoughts:

While it's great that Highland Road now sports 36 baskets, concrete tees, and benches, and three new holes in the woods by the old cemetery, the new design leaves a lot to be desired. The course is set in a wide valley that once was a channel for the Mississippi River, so there's plenty of spots on the edge of the valley that can be used for launching huge bombs down or across the valley, and the old layout of this course took advantage of this terrain several times, and was one of the funnest courses around. Now, this new design, not as much. Only a few of the holes throw across the valley. The gold course is challenging, and fun, and there's elevation changes on many holes, but it should have been much more extreme. It's a solid course though, definitely 4 out of 5, and worth going out of the way to play.

New course is great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The revamped Highland Road DG course is very welcomed. The old course was a real hassle. New course is really nice, concrete T-pads, new baskets, hundreds of small trees planted, new walk bridges. Water hazards have been minimized (thank you) They actually have good maps at the pro center, but it's always clear the pro center is there for the tennis people, not the lowly disc golfers. 'nuff said.

Cons:

Drainage is still a problem. Plenty of soggy, muddy areas. Wear old shoes. The short course baskets are painted purple and tend to blend in with the backgrounds. Yellow baskets are easy to see. Some shots are "blind" like coming up the hill on #1, so it would be easy to hit someone on the other side if they came up quickly.

Other Thoughts:

I think the drainage issue could have been addressed during the course construction. From what I read, the entire project was $385,000, so drainage should have been included. As someone else said, signage is temporary, and I would assume permanent signage will follow. All in all, a great place to play.

Nice 2 Basket Per Hole Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Big tee pads and 2 baskets per hole. Beautiful park that's well taken care of. Trash cans and benches throughout. Pretty easy to follow once you know 11-13 are across the road.

Well designed course but I had issues finding a line on a few holes when playing it the first time to the gold baskets. So I'm looking forward to going back and playing again. Especially 6, 7, 8 as they can get ugly quick if you don't really know the line or lay of the land.

Cons:

No permanent tee signs yet but I'm sure that will come soon. It's also easy to park in the wrong lot and end up at 16-17 vs 1. Make sure you park by tennis courts.

Edit: after playing this course on a nice Sunday afternoon it gets really crowded with lots of people in the fairways and kids playing around baskets on 9 and 18.
I can also see 3 being wet a lot because of poor water drainage

Other Thoughts:

Really a great course IMO. While I haven't played as many courses as some over the last 20 years, I try to stick to quality over quality and this course delivered. Most of my issues where playing it blind and tee signs that will get added, so not much to really complain about here.

If it weren't for the pedestrian traffic a wet fairways this course is an easy 4.5 in my book
