Pros:

This is a really beautiful course set throughout J. Frank Wilson Memorial Park. In reality, this course is possibly the best kept secret in local parks and rec., since as someone who lived in the area for years, I didn't even know this course existed until just recently.

For a course whose average hole seemed to be about 230ish feet, there really were a fair amount of interesting shots. Doglegs both right and left, and significantly up and downhill keep you interested rather than feeling like you are at a pitch-and-putt.

Many of the green complexes are signifcantly sloped which adds a bit of difficulty to the putt and approach from which the course definitely benefits. Watch out for rollaways!

For a course that doesn't at first glance appear to get a ton of foot traffic, the DISCatchers were in great shape, the hole lines were cleanly cut and maintained, and navigation was a breeze with ample navigational signs. Finding the first tee is easy, look for the big sign at the first parking lot that will direct you to a course map with scorecards available. Facilities on site include covered picnic areas and restroom facilities. I also appreciated the wooden steps that were cut into a few of the steeper walks to help with footing.

Some of the throws down the hills and into the lower valleys of the course, 4 being a great example, are very picturesque.

Cons:

Not a ton of distance variety here. I really wanted to rip a driver but never got the chance.

Course terrain is very rocky which is sometimes difficult on footing, and is not easy on the discs either.

Hole 4 is dangerous. The teeing area is on the park road in the middle of a turn. That is setting up for someone to be hit by a car.

Hole 17 is a bit close to the basketball area and I have heard that has caused some interference in the past.

Teepads are a bit inconsistent. Some are well packed dirt and cinders bordered by logs and with a wooden plank in place to mark the front of the pad. Others are uneven dirt without a marker present. Hole 4 is mentioned above.

Other Thoughts:

The hole par here is often very very generous. In reality, most every hole should play as a par 3, but this is supposed to be a beginner-friendly course so take that into consideration.

Rated 'E' for Everyone 2+ years

Pros:

It's a pitch'n putt with fun elevation. It plays around a skate park and basketball court, up and down hills and a few valley shots which makes it thoroughly enjoyable. Great course for albinos, you never stray too far from the canopy of mature trees, a surprisingly verdant course for being in a city park. The baskets are solid, the tees are natural but in good shape mostly, and the designer(s) did an admirable job switching the holes up. For such a short course, it's impressive that the holes didn't suffer much from monotony, largely due to the elevation. A few baskets are located on quick greens to sprinkle some challenge on an otherwise easy course. Even a creek comes into play, kind of, on a couple of holes.

Cons:

• The assigned pars are extremely forgiving. Everything on this course should have been a par 3 and maybe a handful of par 2s if you're into that sort of thing.

• Natural tees but few holes require much of a run-up so they're not likely to get rutted out quickly.

• Lots of green underbrush and occasional briers so be wary of tossing green discs around on certain holes.

• The tee signs aren't terribly graphic. When in doubt, just throw straight.

• Couldn't really play 16 because one of the basketball playing homeys parked his whip directly behind the basket. Lots of potential to hit cars if you over shoot the basket any when the court is full.

Other Thoughts:

This isn't a road trip course by any means but it made a nice, fun warm-up for us on the way to Sontag. A really good course to work your putter game but I actually broke out a driver here and there to hit certain angles. Just a cool little park to kill time with a quick round.

Pros:

* Good use of elevation.
* Many "ace run" holes.
* Layout is logical with baskets and tees close together.
* Parks and Recreation Department does a good job of maintaining the course.

Cons:

* Course is short, designer maximized space but still no long holes.
* Course is relatively easy, no real rough, can almost always recover from bad drives to get par.

Other Thoughts:

Fun short course, not much challenge though. Some holes are marked as par 4's but should be 3's. Overall good course, definitely worth playing.

Fun little course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Its a nice short 18 hole course located in downtown Martinsville.
• Was a fun course to play while me and my dad were down for vacation.
• A lot of chances for ace runs.

Cons:

• Unfortunately the course is located/wrapped around a skateboarding park, which was loaded with kids. So it was quite difficult to concentrate when needed.
• It seems the creator of the course had limited space and had to compact the course to get the full 18 in.
• Would have been nicer if the course was slightly longer.
• A few of the holes play over a road that leads into park and other holes played back towards the basketball court/parked cars. Was tons of people there so it made those shots dangerous.

Other Thoughts:

•All in all it was a fun course to play and next year when we are down we will probably play it again.
• Its short enough to get in multiple rounds in one day/a few hours
