Magic Mach 5's

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Great city park setting
~Utilizes the prime geography of the park
~Easy to navigate

Cons:

~Plays along parking lots, ball fields, roads, and walking paths
~Needs more variety

Other Thoughts:

Nice clean park situated near the city hospital and surrounded by neighboring houses. Parking lot adjacent to a sturdy pavilion which is where the course starts. I visited on a warm December day and had the course to myself with only a few pedestrians out for leisurely walks.

I love good park style courses that utilize shot shaping around large mature trees and for the most part that's what this course is. A decent 9 hole course overall, but it left me wanting a bit more.

Holes 1, 8, and 9 are short straight shot type holes while the rest are longer and more technical. Good use of the park for the most part, however be aware it's completely shared space as the course intersects the walking paths, roads, and plays along the hospital parking lot and around a playground.

Navigation is a breeze, and you could easily play numerous loops. Hole 2 is concerning due to it's design playing as a 90 degree dogleg left along the hospital parking lot, play cautiously. It scratches the itch as a course, but also falls short of being good enough for me to want to come back. If ever in the area though I'd not hesitate to get out and throw a quick nine.

Purple Baskets… Hopefully No Purple Eyes!

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Magic City DGC is the newest course that has been added to Akron's western suburbs. Playing through the scattered mature trees of Barberton's Tuscora Park, the variety in distances and technicality provides a quality experience for all skill levels.

+ All tees are concrete (with holes #1 and #8 utilizing pre-existing concrete). The baskets are brand new Mach 5's with a custom purple finish. Not only do the baskets match the purple theme of the City of Barberton, but they are easy to spot from long distances.

+ The lines through the existing large trees are thoughtfully crafted and well thought out.

Cons:

- Many holes play near/over a pretty popular walking path. A couple of holes play over roads as well. There may also be pedestrians utilizing some of the fairways at various times throughout the day. This course could become very dangerous very quickly if you aren't careful.

- #2 does play really close to the parking lot for the hospital. Without a mando, there's nothing stopping you from letting a drive rip over the parking lot, skipping the dogleg completely and setting up a possible eagle putt. I think this hole would benefit from the tee being closer to the baseball fence, and putting a mando to avoid the lot. Not possible at this point, since the concrete is already poured. It's also a blind shot over the walking path.

- #9 is a short hole just over 200 feet. It plays over an intersection of road towards the pavilion by the baseball field. I imagine that this can become unplayable when there's games or events going on.

- At the time of this review, there were no tee signs. These are supposedly coming soon. Also, there was no basket on #5. This hole may also bring private property into play.

Other Thoughts:

While I think the course itself is pretty fun, you can't ignore how dangerous a few areas may be.

With Portage Lakes, Johnson UMC, Silver Creek, and Wadsworth within 20 minutes, there's no shortage of options when it comes to disc golf in the area. I could see many people pass up Magic City to play one of the other options.
