Holy Toledo!

Pros:

The Lakeside course is as good if not better than the Hillside 18. It's also long, with plenty of trees, elevation change and as the name suggests even more water in play. It has long and short concrete tee pads, and the chains still have that new DISCatcher smell. The signs are pretty nice as well.

It's a par 71 from the long tees. Birdies are out there if you can keep it between the trees. I had about a 20' putt for birdie on hole 4 that bounced off the front of the basket. When I shouted out loud "Nooooo!" a bald eagle that was hanging out nearby took to the sky. Still kind of a birdie. The landscape makes for a beautiful hike too. Playing along the edges of the lake and over the water on occasion will keep you on your toes.

My favorite holes were 7, 8, 10 and 15. 7 and 8 play with the lake to the right, through a lot of trees. There is a considerable slope leading down toward the water, so the fairways roll left to right to the water. It's not super close, but a bad bounce off a tree or a roll may send you there. 10 is a midrange toss up to the edge of a calm and scenic cove, then another over the glassy water to a pin. You need to hit the landing zones to have windows between trees. 15 has another shot playing as close to the water as you can manage while staying dry, then over an inlet to the basket.

Cons:

I played here after heavy rains, and mud and debris had washed over a few of the tee pads. There was one hole that could have used some stairs or a bridge to get down a muddy hill. Maybe there is something in place by now, or that puddle is usually dry. I had to find a long way around.

Adding a few benches would be nice. There was one wooden bench near the basket on hole 15. I did enjoy a seat there after 32 and a half holes on a hot day, but it is pretty wobbly and weathered.

Other Thoughts:

I would probably choose Lakeside if I had to pick the better of the courses at Toledo Bend, but you should make sure there is time to play both. Each of them are very good. As they continue to break in I'm sure they'll age well
