Pros:
Powell Station Park in Knoxville offers a lot of things that most 9 holers do not:
Good tee pads - brick pavers, framed by 4X4s, good and solid.
Tee Signs - showing the hole, all necessary information and an anti-smoking message, the funding and focus of this course.
Good Baskets - the Prodigys are in good shape and a unique green colored.
Next Tee signs - just enough, where needed most.
In addition to those basics, there's also a surprising variety of holes:
3 mostly open holes, 3 with partial woods and 3 more heavily wooded.
Hole shapes were varied also, left, straight and right.
Not a lot of elevation in the park, but the elevated tees on #3 and #9 were well laid out.
While there's not a lot of variety in hole length, one at 210', two at 330' and the rest between 225' and 300', there is not a ton of room in this park, and they did stay mostly away from lost disc areas.
Cons:
#9 fairway goes right over a small stage and its bench seating. There's actually a Mando from the tee that forces you over that area, creating a right dogleg hole. Obviously, if anything is going on in that area, this hole can't be played.
Other Thoughts:
I've got a couple of 9 Holers near me, they are the closest courses to me and very convenient when I don't have time to get a full 18 in. Victor Ashe and Tommy Schumpert are both long and time consuming courses (1.5 hours at least), so this is a good alternative to get a quick round in.
Even got to talk to a local on the course and he asked if I wanted play another round, but I explained this was part of my 81 hole tour of Knoxville, so I had to keep moving.
#1 is a good opening hole, mostly open, slightly downhill, slight turn to the left. Not too long, so a good one to open up on.
#5 and #6 are the most heavily wooded, one straight and one hard to the left.
#7 is a deceptive hole, open tee shot, but the basket is set back under low hanging branches, tried to fly my upshot in through those branches and came up way short, then couldn't get enough on the putt, because of the branches.
#9 finishes pretty well, after clearing the Mando, and hopefully the branches, the basket is somewhat guarded, but plays as a somewhat soft Par 4.
Yes, if I lived on this side of Knoxville and didn't have time to play one of the longer courses, I would enjoy playing Powell Station several times a year.
