It Must Be a Tiny Hawk to Cast This Little Shadow

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- beautifully maintained course (and/or owner's backyard!)
- fantastic pro shop on site with incredible DG selection (including mini and macro discs)
- port o potty AND plumbed bathrooms on site
- snacks available for purchase at pro shop (and very affordable)
- pay to play rate is extremely reasonable for a private course
- owners are extremely friendly/helpful
- three concrete tees per hole
- innovative disc catching system over pond hazard
- small creek hazard on hole 16
- tee signs at each of the three tees with details for regular AND mini courses
- virtually no rough to speak of; course is clean of debris
- picnic tables and benches throughout course
- mini baskets mounted on tree stumps to be at a reasonable height
- baskets are all in good repair
- mini practice basket
- loaner weighted mini discs available
- built-in bridges where necessary

Cons:

- may be hard to play both courses without a fair amount of waiting if the course is busy
- very short distances on mini course, if you consider this a con
- almost entirely flat; again, not sure this is a true con for the mini course
- can't throw macro discs (yet!) which would be a bit easier to control

Other Thoughts:

Shadow of the Hawk is a mini disc golf course that shares the same fairways and tees as Hawk's Landing. If you think Shadow of the Hawk is an afterthought, think again - every aspect of this course has been given the same care and attention as the full-length course. I really had to idea how to rate this course; comparing it to "normal" disc golf courses seems silly, and there are hardly any mini courses to compare to. Ultimately, I rated this as if it were compared to other mini courses - how good is it as a mini course, with a splash of "is it worth making the trip to this course/would you enjoy playing it."

This course is really cool as a mini course but not life altering or anything. There are 18 mini baskets on the course and you play with a mini disc - I recommend asking the owners for a loaner weighted mini disc; that was hard enough to throw. Had I thrown my ordinary mini marker, it would have been humiliating :). Note that larger discs like macro discs will be very hard to get in the tiny mini baskets. Fear not though, the owners told me they have purchased 18 larger macro baskets they will be putting in for a 3rd way to play this course in the near future.

The mini holes are very short since you can't throw mini discs as far as a regular disc. You can get some decent distance on the weighted ones, but controlling the throw is pretty brutal. Putting is also incredibly difficult but it's good for a laugh. The owners mentioned they have a mini tournament every year and a bunch of people show up to compete in a mini-only format. I don't think this is for me but it does sound fun/hilarious.

The baskets for the mini course are typically mounted on tree stumps so they are at a reasonable height and they all were in good repair. The line is often a bit different from the full length Hawk's Landing line, but otherwise the course mostly plays the same as its big brother course. All 3 tees can still be used, with distances listed for Hawk's Landing as well as Shadow of the Hawk.

This does seem like a good place to install a mini course; the fairways are already flat, relatively short, and close together - so you aren't going on insane hikes between 75-125 ft holes.

All the same amenities as Hawk's Landing are available, including buying mini or macro discs. The owners here are great and clearly love their disc golf courses. If you can birdie any of these holes throwing a mini... I am impressed. It is harder than it looks!

I would not make the trip out here just for a mini round, but if you are here to play Hawk's Landing why not try it out for fun? I was fortunate that it wasn't busy during my visit so I threw the normal course and the mini course at the same time, but I probably wouldn't try to do this during busier times since it could hold people up. If you are passing through the area, I recommend a visit here.

It's For Real 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plays through the woods. Course layed out & maintained as well any full size course we have played.

Like full size disc golf on a smaller scale. Took some getting use to, but had a great time.

The owner is freindly and enthusiastic about mini and full size disc golf. He has a pro shop/disc museum on site.

Cons:

None. Would not mind if there were more mini courses around.

Other Thoughts:

Went expecting more of a novelty than a serious sport. Pleasantly surprised.

One of our group was throwing a mini 200 feet accurately after just one round.

Would play often if we lived nearby.
