Very scenic and less difficult counterpart to KP 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very scenic, good signage, concrete teepads, great baskets, common sense layout, little overlap of fairways, multiple teepads.

Cons:

Similar to KP in that it can be long and tiring, and also the separated holes through the tunnel can break the flow of the round a little bit. Some bike paths that you play over can cause issues.

Other Thoughts:

Great couterpart and slightly less difficult than KP, probably a bit more scenic, and definitely the best 1-2 punch outside of VQ-BRP!

Sweet Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an AWESOME COURSE!!!

Hard lines, interesting though.

I like the fact that the advanced and regular tees were quite different making the advanced tees truly for more advanced players. One thing I found challenging here playing my first time and shooting 5 big was, there were several holes that you were throwing blind and could not see the basket. But, over all, the scenery was awesome, course was well kept, had a bathroom, you did have to pay but it is worth it. I totally recommend this course. You will not regret it.

Cons:

If you want people to pay, make sure there are tickets there for people to take proving they actually paid.

The maps or posted signs are good for elevations, pars, hole numbers and distances but they were a bit cartoony and not that accurate when it came to the trees and rough in the area. More so to tell you where the basket and tee pad are.

You do have several blind shots which sucked and try your best to stay out of the rough. You will definitely gain some strokes because the rough is hard to get out of, plus there are thorns.

Other Thoughts:

I would highly recommend this course to beginners or advanced players. I met some great people out there and had a blast. I wish I had a course like this near my home town.

A little bit of everything 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set up in a large, very well maintained multiuse park. However besides the walking path it is secluded from the other non disc golf activities. The baskets are Mach 3's that were all in great shape and caught fine. The tees are large, level and grip nicely. These are actually some of the largest pads, if the largest pads, That I've ever seen before. There are 2 tees on all but 3 holes. There are multiple pin placements on most if not all the holes as well. Very nice. The price is $5 a round which is a little high. I'm used to $5 a day, however this course is actually worth it. Or as close as you'll get. There's water, uphill, downhill, wooded, open, left turning, right turning, etc. Pretty much every shot and disc in your bag will be used here. Hole 3 was one of the most visually appealing (and also challenging) holes I've seen in quite awhile. There's like 4 or 5 trees leaning heavily to the right. Words don't do it justice. Check out the pictures to see what I mean. This is just one of the many fantastic design elements on this course. Hole 11 is also a great use of the terrain, incorporating the pond and having tee pad in front of the pond as a drop zone. The tee signs are all on point and provide plenty of info. They get the job done for sure. The flow of the course is pretty easy to follow with the exception of a couple spots. the tough spots are well marked though, making navigation pretty simple. The shot over the pond on 11 was too long for us, but would be awesome for the big arms out there. The rough is punishing on quite a few holes, especially hole 9 with all the sumac trees, so accuracy is rewarded and inaccuracy is punished here. This makes you really want to hit your line or your score will really suffer. Excellent course for more experienced players. there's a nice kiosk with a course map and other disc golf info on it by hole 1. Also a port o potty here as well. The course is also up year round which is, again, just another bonus here.

Cons:

The bugs can be pretty brutal but I'm used to that being from WI and if you're from MN I'm sure you are as well, so not really a con. Just bring bug spray. Making it $5 per day seems more reasonable than per round, Maybe that's just me but I doubt it. Also there were no envelopes for payment when we went. If you're going to charge that amount, make sure you have enough envelopes at least. Other than that, I can't think of too much honestly.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first trip to MN and I was astounded at the quality of the courses I played. I was up here mainly to play Blue Ribbon which I didn't even get to play. This area is a destination area for disc golf for sure. This was the best of the 11 courses I played by far. Oakwood was great too, but from a pure challenge standpoint, the valley takes the cake. I can't wait to come back to the twin cities and see what else they have to offer. Great course, must play.

mind the signs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 27, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Well-maintained course
- fairly good signage (I managed to throw the wrong way on #8 at first, in some places you kinda have to guess in which of the positions in the basket is in)
- There is a portajohn there.. and it was as clean as those things tend to be.

Cons:

- if you have a tendency to yank your shots, beware of the short pad on #8 (lost one there because the mosquities flicked me so much off that I just yanked it.. beautiful line over and into the lake..)

Other Thoughts:

Mosquitoes on some holes are a real pain, but not much the maintainers can do about that, I guess.
I
managed to drop another disc in the pond on #11 from what I at first thought was the short tee for #11, but actually was the dropzone for the long tee. I spent quite a while walking around in the pond looking for that disc, and managed to find 4 discs, none of which was the one I was looking for. Since I was wet up to my croth and my boots were full of sludge I skipped the remainder of the course.
I do recommend that if you have the slightest doubt about your abilities, go to the short tee on #11 (on the other side of the pond ;))

I don't mind paying the $5 it cost to play here when you know it's put towards keeping the course as good as it is.. but apparently off-season you can't get it at the park (or so I've been told).

EDIT: I have been made aware that I failed to realize that what I thought was the short tee for #11 was actually the dropzone for the long tee. I've edited parts of my 'other thoughts' out and removed bits in the 'con'-section as well.
EDIT2: sheehs. my previous rating was based on my wrongful interpretation of hole #11. Kicked it up a notch .. and changed the title too.

Walk Through The Valley Of The Shadow Of... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The more I think about this course, the more impressive it really is. The design and challenge of this course never stops coming at you. The variety of shots required on this course it amazing. There is plenty of elevation, there are plenty of trees, the water comes into play and it seems like every shot must be thought out. There are several longer holes that require placement shots. Even the shortest holes are filled with some challenge. The park itself looked well maintained and there is lots of care that goes to this course. The local crowd seemed to be of high quality and really putting the effort into keeping this course and making it better. Tee pads were in good condition and baskets were good as well.

Cons:

There are places on this course that get really muddy with rain or hold water to create small ponds. There is at least one place where two holes cross and there are a few places wehre pedestrian walkways come into play. There are a couple of places where the walk for one basket to the next tee is longer than one would like. A couple of tee pads are on walkways (poor hole one does not make a good impression because of this).

Other Thoughts:

The quality of disc golf that this course asks you to play is very high making it a bit of a challenge for lower level players. Having a map for this course would be extremely beneficial. Be sure to park as far away from the street as you can get otherwise you may be walking a long ways. Please look out for other park users around the baseball fields and on the walking paths. This course is really of high quality and feels like a higer level course than some of the others in the area. This course makes you throw a good shot in order to get your chance at birdie.

Beautiful Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Wonderful shot variety. You play up and down hills. Through the woods, and in the open fields. Both long and short tees on every hole, the longs play like true pro tees.
2. Beautiful park. The park is very nice and caters to disc golf very well. It is fairly wooded, and there isn't much extra foot traffic.
3. Very difficult. This course was pretty challenging. Granted we played it on a day when the wind was very strong, it was still more challenging than most courses. You will play both hiesers and anhiesers through the woods. Holes from 200 to 600 ft long.
4. Easy to get to. Enough said, it's a short drive from downtown. I was traveling to the airport from Wisconsin and it was a perfect stop along the way.
5. Cement tees.
6. Every hole has distance marked. All holes are marked on the long tees with the distance to the short and long pin locations.
7. Water comes into play, and it's about 350' effective feet to clear the water from the longs. My favorite hole on the course.
8. You can drink. I love a beer while playing DG, here nobody will bat an eye. (Check CONS #5 for the counter of this.)

Cons:

1. The course could be much more well marked. We had several holes that we did not know where to go next, or several tees where we could not figure out where the pin was.
2. The wind f***in sucked. More of a personal problem I know.
3. The course seems pretty busy. We were here on a less than perfect day and there where still many groups. Expect it to be crowded over the summer.
4. Some of the holes require a lot more luck than skill. There are definitely a few holes that are more luck oriented than skill. This could be a pro, but when there really isn't a good line on a hole it's annoying.
5. There are not nearly enough garbage cans. A few of the holes have a lot of garbage around the tees clearly from the lack of cans. If you drink, save your cans until you get to a disposal unit.

Other Thoughts:

This is a phenominal course. Anything that gets 4.0 from me is one of the top courses I've played. You would be dumb not to play this if you where in the twin cities area. Honestly a great course, even if the navigation of it is a bit annoying.

The Time to Play is Now... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

An excellent 18-hole pay-to-play course with cement tee pads. A challenging variety of lengthy sparsely wooded holes in tight quarters, with gradual to extreme elevation change. You will use almost every disc in your bag.

Cons:

The pond on a windy day. I personally hate that pond so much, unless I clear it. Other than that, an excellent course.

Other Thoughts:

A must play in the twin cities area. The course is now in the winter lay-out (short tee locations). For those of you without the season pass, the trailer is gone for the winter so it is currently free to play as of 11/3/12.

Intermediate/Expert 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set in a large, multi-use park, well spread out in a few different sections. There is a baseball field by a few holes at the start, but it shouldn't cause any interference. Seems pretty free and clear for DG overall, except for a walking path.
- Holes are pretty well balanced between fairly wide open, or full of hazards, or in thick woods/forest. The first hole in the woods is #2, a 400'+ BEAST that starts with an uphill, blind forest shot that continues through a dense grove of skinny trees, and ultimately ends right through a gap. The long pin is ridiculous, you need a cannon to get down there. #3 is a cool RHFH flick shot through a row of diagonal trees, #5 is a steep uphill shot with nastiness all along either side of the fairway. Accuracy is a must, and distance is helpful. #13 is a downhill valley shot through a small gap, #14 is a mega RHBH flex line cut out of the forest with skinny trees on the approach, and #15 is a near 180 degree dogleg right around dense woods. All of these holes need good accuracy to stay out of big trouble.
- A good amount of holes have huge hazards that take away lines, and punish errant shots well. #9, for instance, is a valley shot over a whoooole bunch of nastiness, if you don't clear it off the tee, you might never clear it all!!! #10 coming back is a downhill anny or hyzer, either shot must go way wide of a large row of trees. #6 is uphill, with enough trees to force a perfect shot to get to the pin. #11 uses a large pond as a huge hazard, it takes a big league drive to get over the water from the long tee. #16 is an elevated shot that hyzers deep in the forest at the end, while #18 is an uphill hole with the basket tucked in some woods.
- Elevation changes are ever present here, from minor to major. Some gentle downhill slopes on #1, #4, #7, #12, and some more serious ones on #10, #11, and #13. Gentler uphill slopes on #2 and #18, and some very noticeable ones on #5 and #6. The bigger changes make a huge difference in the way the holes play, both off the tee and near some baskets.
- Water is used well to provide punishment. The large pond is in play on #8 and #11, with a swamp directly in front of/right of the tee on #8, and a huge part of #11's fairway. Drop zone is probably used often. Another pond plays to the right, and behind of the pin on #13, with a downhill green sloping to the water. A real concern on approaches or long putts. A few other areas are prone to swampiness as well, like the right of #4, and by the pin on #15.
- Excellent teepads, baskets, and signs. Top notch. Map located at the front of the course; it can be helpful at spots, like crossing under the road to get to #12.

Cons:

- Swampy areas seem like they could be a problem, the area by the fence on #4 isn't too bad, but the pool of water directly in front of the basket on #15 seems like a constant flood potential.
- A few spots where the holes are kind of close. #16 shoots over #11's basket, and #4 is susceptible to RHBH hyzers that fade too early. Not a huge deal in either case.

Other Thoughts:

- All in all, a pretty tough course that has lots of hazards to contend with, some tricky, wooded doglegs, and decent to good elevation changes. The pro tees add both length and difficulty, and the short tees are a lot more forgiving to newer players (except #9!). Should be a good test of a wide range of skills; line-shaping, distance, accuracy, and shot placement. I would recommend it to more advanced players, true beginners might be overwhelmed in multiple spots.

Loved the course, of course, for certain 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging course for Advanced/Pro players. Two sets of tee boxes, great flow, variety of shots, length, different shots for each hole (mostly). The course is set up in a (duh) valley, You have elevation, some water, woods, and kept grass to play across.

Cons:

Tee pads suck, and are inconsistent. Lack of garbage cans. From the long tee, it's a shot to clear the water on hole 11.

Other Thoughts:

You wanna hear it? Here it goes...

I really enjoyed the course. I played Slacker League here today (Every Wednesday at 11 AM). Great group of guys, variety of skill levels. Back to the course though, it includes a wide variety of shots, including those holes that should be gimme 2's for everybody (3, 4, and 12) and those that will challenge the best players (2, 8, and 11). You throw up hill, you throw downhill, you throw across the hill (9), you have a wicked L to R hole (15), and holes to air it out. Today was pretty windy (15-20), so having those stable-overstable discs are a must.

I don't remember seeing any garbage cans, but it is 11/16/2011. In Minnesota. I thought the course was kept, but for a pay-to-play, I'd expect to see at least cans. There wasn't trash everywhere, only a few things on a few holes. Parking may be an issue, if there is baseball/softball games going on. There were paths near or in the line of tee shots on a couple of holes, but I was told it wasn't really an issue, as they don't get used much.

For a pay to play, I'd expect to see at the very least, better teepads, these look to be archaic. This was a very enjoyable course to play, I shot like Ship High In Transit, but I still had a hell of a time.

Cons:

Signage. Maybe provide maps? I would not have had a clue about the new holes if someone there wouldn't have told me!

Very underrated metro course. With the added holes, the course went from Geek to Sheek!

So much potential. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice concrete tees and nice baskets. Multiple basket locations and tees on most every hole. good mix of long bomber with some good technical thrown in. Well maintained course that will require you throw every shot in your bag at least once. Short and tight, long and open, left turns, and right turns are all here.

Holes 1-11 and 16-18 are old holes that are super well maintained. Holes 12-15 play across the road (there is a tunnel underneath) and are new, tee pads are gravel boxes and the fairways are not obvious.

Cons:

No signs, no maps, no fucking clue where anything is. Seriously that is 1 full star down right there. You can stand on a teepad and see multiple baskets at times, with no indication which one you are shooting at. No indication what teepads are for what holes, GIANT FAIL. 12-15 need a lot of clean-up they are still super rough and frankly feel like another course when compared with 1-11 and 16-18. Fairway Flyerz has a booth there to sell $5 wristbands, and the dude working it when we were there is a moron. Argued with me that a Hornet is just a rebranded Nebula.

In a couple spots you are crossing where people are throwing, that is just poor design, and since they just redid a bunch of it I really think they could have fixed that.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course a few times before it went to pay to play and didn't really care for it, and now with the new holes I still don't really care for it.

Edit: Bumping up to 4 stars as they have added a nice course map at the beginning, and signage on every hole. Made for a much more enjoyable round.
The lack of navigation is a massive fail that annoys me, and the course just feels like it could be so much more. It's still a good course that I think a lot of people would enjoy (just not me) but it could be so much more.

New and Improved 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 28, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The Valley DGC, formerly known as North Valley and often referred to as Inver Grove Heights, is a great intermediate to advanced level course.

It's got a fantastic balance of challenges including elevation (both uphill and downhill holes), tightly wooded fairways, long bombs (some high risk/reward, some just challenge you to throw far to score a birdie), short technical holes, and tricky pin positions.

One of my favorite aspects of this course is that many of the holes offer multiple interesting routes to the basket. The variety and balance that this course presents is what really makes it stand out.

16/18 holes are great and often demand a good tee shot, a great approach, a bold putt, or a combination of those elements. Even the shortest hole on the course, hole 3, is a neat hole. If you're looking for a challenging course that isn't overly punishing, this is it. There are a lot of birdies to be had for anyone who can throw 350'+ and a bunch of challenging pars for those who don't throw as far.

Cons:

Hole 1 and 18 are the two worst holes on the course. Unreachable in 1 for a lot of people, but essentially gimme 3's if you don't have the arm to 2.

The new layout has improved the flow of the play a lot, but you still walk across hole 2's fairway to get from hole 4 to 5.

Other Thoughts:

The pay to play format has been a source of some controversy but I support it. Great changes were made to the course last year and most people got to enjoy them for free. This year you have to pay.

The Valley is a high caliber course and, in the past, keeping it clean was a problem. I am hoping that the city and Fairway Flyerz will get the garbage under control, but I'm not the type who would give demerits to a course that offers awesome disc golf because of garbage lying around unless it was really terrible.

The amenities that you might expect at pay courses are not present here, but the course offers great disc golf. You can purchase a season pass which I believe also gets you access to Kaposia for the whole year for $30, or pay $5 for the day.

Nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is great. It is very well maintained and clean. The park is in the middle of updating and the new trees and pads are awesome. The course has it all length and technicality as wall as a vast array of shot requirements. The course plays in a large valley (hence the name) and it has a lot of moderate elevation changes. There are wooded holes open holes and water and all are used very well. Hole three is and awesome wooded hole that has very unique trees that lean to the left (pictured in the gallery). Hole 11 is over a good-sized pond and is very challenging. I played this course in the rain and still had a blast. All of the baskets are in good shape and have nice wood chip greens. Benches are nice and look brand new. This course is challenging but it is fairly beginner friendly because it is well maintained and has short tees on most holes.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

-HOLE #1
This hole tees off right out of the parking lot and is and easy hyzer to start things off. The pin is tucked back in the woods but it has a nice big open green.
-HOLE #2
This is a long one that snakes through the woods to a fairly well protected pin that is a little left of where you tee off. This is a really tough hole that will take skill to get a four.
-HOLE #3
I think this is the coolest hole on the course. It's not long it just looks cool. The trees lean to the left in a way I have never seen before. It looks like a windstorm went through when the trees were young and they grew at an angle because of this. The trees are in a straight ling right in the middle of the fairway and they are hard to get around. Once you do it's a easy putt and hopefully if you don't hit a tree you can get a shot back.
-HOLE #4
This hole is not very imaginative and seems kind of like filler. It straight but dose have a few trees to get in your way. The pin is tucked in a tree cove.
-HOLE #5
Big up shot with a steep dirt hill on the right and a downhill on the right. This one is tight and if you don't hit the thin fairway it will be hard to get par.
-HOLE #6
This one is a hillside hyzer with a blind pin that is blocked from view by thick tree. A hyzer spike seems to be a good shot here and if you do it right a two or even an ace is possible.
-HOLE #7
This is a fun hole that is fairly open and long. The tee is elevated and once you get through the three small trees that guard the fairway its an open field to the pin.
-HOLE #8
Tee off back up the hill with your choice of hyzer or anhyzer. There is a big pond to the right that will come into play later but isn't a problem on this one. A cluster of big pine trees blocks the pin. A good drive and there is a chance for two.

-HOLE #9
Nice thickly wooed anhyzer with tall shrubs right in front of the tee. As you approach the pin the trees get thicker. This hole is not that long and I ended up throwing an awesome shot and parked it right next to the pin.
-HOLE #10
A downhill shot with options. You can go right or left to get around the island of trees in the middle of the fairway. A drive and a good approach will yield a par.
-HOLE #11
This one is long and the pond is right in the middle of the fairway. The tee is elevated and it's a real nice view. If you don't want to tempt the water there is a short tee down next to the pond as well. This is a very hard par even if you don't go in the water.
-HOLE #12
A shorter tunnel shot with a high ceiling so you can throw it high but better keep it straight. There are new trees planted that guard the pin and when they get bigger they will be a real challenge and make this hole much harder.
-HOLE #13
Hole 13 is a slight anhyzer and plays down hill out of a parking lot. There are a few big trees that spread across the fairway. Once through them it's open to the hole. There is a longer alternate pin that I didn't know about that sits right next to another pond.
-HOLE #14
A long wooded hole much like hole 2. It will take two good drives to have a chance at par. The pin is elevated and is blocked by a big tree. This is a tough one and par is a great score.
-Hole #15
This one is very interesting because it Hyzers like a horseshoe. It's a hard hole because there are a lot of trees that can grab your disc if you try to throw to high, but if you don't get enough distance you won't be able to see the pin. When I played this hole the pin was under water because of a lot of rain so I played back to pin 13.
-HOLE #16
The last three holes are long. This one is an elevated, blind hyzer that plays over pin 11 back toward where the course starts. After playing through a fairly open fairway with the big pond on the right. After the first throw there is an uphill shot to a pin tucked deep in the woods. I felt good with a four here.
-HOLE #17
Long and open easy if you have a big arm. The tee pad is back in the woods but this one is almost wide open with a few small trees littered across the fairway.
-HOLE #18
This is the longest hole on the course and is wide open once again. It's nice to end with a big bomb. The pin is in the woods on a little hillside but if you have a big arm it's an easy three.

Cons:

I think most of the cons to this course are in the process of being fixed. There is know signage and if you don't have a map it can be a little bit confusing. Some of the pads have not been updated yet but the ones that have are wide and very nice. Some of the holes play close to walking trails and other holes, this could be a problem if the park is busy. Some of the new holes need a bit more thinning. There are some erosion issues as well but this course has the potential to be a 4.5 or even a 5 in my book.

New & Improved 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 4, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Other Thoughts:

This is the new & improved version of the course formerly called North Valley. But with four new holes in South Valley and four removed from North Valley plus several tee and pin changes, it's a significantly new course. The Park Dept wanted to upgrade the course now that it's pay-to-play in combination with Kaposia down the road. A few steep holes with erosion issues were removed but the tradeoff was additional property and length in the new South Valley holes with still some decent elevation changes and chance for future expansion. The course has the potential for a 4.5 rating once all of the landscaping upgrades have been completed over the next few years. The course signage is now completed, tees in South Valley are concreted and a pro shop is there from May to Sept.
