Pros:
Restored to 18 holes rolling throughout the St Mary's campus, you'll be in view of some historic school buildings, the baseball and softball fields, and a large pond/small lake to the left on 12 and 13. Fortunately, these don't interfere with the course at all except the lake (close to the baseball field on 4, but it's getting to the green so it's unlikely you'll go over the 10ft fence).
All the baskets are in good shape: nine MachVs, eight Lightning DB5s, and one single-chain DisCatcher practice model.
The distances required are long enough to be challenging for more intermediate/advanced players. Always the option to set up shorter tees for lower skill levels later on. Add on some risky elevation on the greens of 4, 5, 7, and 12 and you have a step up in the difficulty rankings.
Elevation is the highlight, and the first five holes are some of the strongest. 1 and 5 are strong uphills while 3 is short and mild, 2 and 4 are longer downhill tosses with plenty of shot shaping to do around the mature trees. 14 is a challenge that deserves respect. Sharply uphill all the way, the pin sits left of an old woodshed, and a dangerous slope to the right is about 40ft short of the pin. It's a difficult one.
The huge trees are positioned in difficult ways. 8, 10, and 13 have the left side taken away, and more trees guarding the green on the right side. 16 has a low left side gap, or the right side line over the road. It would be unwise to choose the left option on 2 and 5.
Cons:
Navigation is nonexistent. Ten holes are marked by pink utility flags, 1, 6, and 16 tee from a road/concrete, but the others are just flags in grass. 9 and 12 tee from infrastructure of an older version of the course (brick pavers), while 2, 4, and 5 have a small wooden sign with the hole number. The tees of 14 and 15 were completely unmarked and I had to rely on the other apps map. Unfortunately even the pictures which are only 5 months old are out of date as 1, 5-8 and 15-18 have all been restructured. Have the Udisc map.
Roads are interfered with regularly. Near to them on 3, 6, and 7 and going over them on 5 and 8. But the most open line on 11 and 16 is on the right and over the road, 18 has the option on the left, and 9 follows the shape of the road to a ridiculous degree. These holes could get axed due to this, and 9 probably should be. Also the Student Garden sits left of hole 6. Makes for an interesting dogleg, but the plants may not appreciate disc damage.
You'll notice I said the trees are blocking the left line almost all the time. This course is crazy-heavily skewed toward left-finishing throws or perfect left-to-right flex shots. A mild gripe, but it's a noticeable favoritism, 7 and 17 are the only holes I can think of as right-finishing friendly.
Other Thoughts:
The par 4 holes are just at the right distance to be argued over. 440 flat is a long way to reach, but it's nowhere out of the realm of possibility. So some eagle opportunities can be had for the best of the best throwers. I'm ok with all of them, but I'd understand an argument for 12 and 17 being par 3s.
I had doubts going in, but the reason that this course snags a 3.5 from me is that while it has it's issues, it has no "bad" holes. Every hole is enjoyable, even if its fairway is a road.
Overall this is a very enjoyable, elevation-filled, and lengthy round. None of the transitions are incredibly long except 12 to 13 and 18 to your car, but finding the next tee can be a challenge without having the orange app map.
Do I recommend a round? Yeah. If you're aware going in that a few tees don't have exact tee locations, and that navigation may add some time to your round it's a very enjoyable round with enough challenge to keep anyone interested.
