Nice Park, Nice Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 4, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-There are some fun holes here. Holes 4 and 6 both throw off of a large sledding hill. Holes 11,12 and 13 are shorter technical wooded holes that are well designed and offer a good change of pace from the open nature of the rest of the course. The distances are varied, ranging anywhere from 190'-450' from the short tees, and 200'-600' from the longs.
-The two sets of tees make this a fun course for beginners and intermediates alike.
-The entire park is very nice and well kept up. Although it's not exactly scenic, being in amongst corn fields, this park still has an idyllic feel to it.
-The baskets are some of the best DGA Mach series I've seen, and the black paint makes them look nice.
-The tees are concrete hog slat pads that are level and do their job.
-The maintenance is great. No litter, clear, clean fairways, etc.
-There is a practice hole with space for putts and short approaches right by the parking lot.
-Safety isn't much of an issue here. Although there is a walking path and a road, most of the holes don't interact with them and there are no blind shots.

Cons:

-The majority of the holes are wide open. Advanced players will likely find most of this course boring.
-The fairways are designated by prairie grass hazard OB. While some will enjoy this challenge, I personally don't like it.
-Could use more benches
-No elevation changes other than the two shots off the sledding hill.
-This course gets soggy after rain.

Other Thoughts:

-The wooded holes will only get better over time. They are already good, and as the young trees mature, they could be some of the best holes in the area.
-Wind is definitely a factor here. On the front nine, there are no woods, and while the sledding hill does block it some, the shots from the top are brutal if there's any wind. In my most recent round, I was hyzer-flipping my felon, the headwind was so strong. Just something you have to deal with on this course.
-I'm not sure if there are restrooms or not. I've never checked.
-There is a small pond on hole 10. It doesn't usually come into play, but the occasional errant throw or long putt does find its way in.
-Hole 7 plays along a larger pond from the long tees.
-In conclusion, W.S Gibbs Memorial DGC offers a very good disc golf experience for, I believe, most players. The open bomber nature of Gibbs and the tight technical woods of Washington Township give Hendricks County a quality 1-2 punch.

Pros:

-Best thing about this course is a fun risk/reward-2 fun holes from the top of a small hill-Good layout using space available

Cons:

-Very open little to no obstacles to force a shot type -Must play with high grass as OB or no interest

Other Thoughts:

-Great risk/reward with OB, challenge OB to try for a birdie or play it safe for par. -It is a nice park course, mostly open but has enough interest for replay ability for

Best thing to come out of a farm since corn! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

From what used to be pretty much just a flat field rises an excellent 18 hole course. Great variety of holes emphasizing different shots.
Players with diversity in their arsenal are rewarded.
Basket placement is well thought out and creates interest and challenge.
A loaner supply of discs is great for people interested in giving the sport a try. The parking areas are accessible with one at the hole 1/18 and another at hole 10/11.
Mature trees and the amazing view from the hill make this a beautiful course.
A lot of time and dedication went into design and construction, and the parks department continues to impress with upkeep.

Cons:

The grass is not the ideal hazard as it can be easy to loose a bad shot.
Not the longest course ever, which is a con only because you want to keep playing here.

Other Thoughts:

Next tee markers and trash cans are yet to be added, but are on the way.
The course is getting a lot of play and can be crowded at certain times

Hendricks County’s Finest 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 23, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Gibbs Memorial certainly makes the most of the acreage here. The front 9 is mostly open par 3-4 holes lined by prairie grass. Holes 4 and 6 tee off form a sizable sled hill that dominates the landscape. It's not explicitly stated anywhere here, but the local club website does state the prairie grass plays as hazard and on/across the walking paths as OB.

The back 9 is where things start to get technical. Holes 11-15 are short but require some precise gaps to be hit unless you want to take a trip to bogey-ville.

Almost every hole here will test your fundamentals. The course really rewards well placed shots and punishes mistakes if you play the tall grass as hazard.

A lot of the Mach X baskets are placed perfectly to encourage risk/reward play. 3 and 6 are both elevated. The baskets on the more technical holes are well guarded by trees. Hole 5's sits on a slope and mocks anyone foolish enough to run it as I can personally attest.

There are 2 tee pads for every hole but 6.

Holes 1, 9 and 18 are all right by the designated parking area.

There is also a "disc library" in the parking lot for people to try out the sport. There's a nice course map there as well and some information about the local club and disc golf in general.

Cons:

Some next tee pad arrows would be appreciated. The layout is mostly intuitive but with 2 sets of tee pads it could get a bit confusing on exactly where to go.

The prairie grass makes things interesting but it's pretty easy to lose a disc in there. And it's not a lot fun slogging through it to find an errant shot.

There's really nowhere to warm up here.

Having played the course a few more times now there are some potential safety issues to be aware of. Hole 7's fairway comes into play on the blind approach for hole 5. Be careful around hole 3's basket as an errant shot from the top of the hill on 6 could land near 3's green. Also hole 11's fairway could come in to play if you're not careful with your drive on hole 10. I hate to criticize since I'm not sure how I could have designed it better but gotta call a spade a spade.

Other Thoughts:

The concrete hog slat tee pads worked fine for me but may be too short for James Conrad emulators. The tee signs were hand crafted wood and are a nice touch.

Theres a small pond that could come in to play on holes 7 and 12.

This course is brand new at the time of my review and is really just a few amenities away from warranting a rating of 4. It's pretty impressive what the parks department was able to do with what was literally a corn field this time last year.
