Playing in the Dark

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 4, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is one of the best courses I've ever finished before sunrise. What I couldn't see, we'll never know what I missed.
- When you're on the clock, you have to start your playing early. And sometimes, you get too ambitious and have to wait in your vehicle 20 minutes to at least start having a little bit of light to work with.
- When you're trying to play a speed round and it's dark, you're suddenly throwing a lot of soft, 150-foot, straight shots. And, when the five wooded holes on the courses range in distances between 122 - 186, you're in luck.
- Holes 1, 2, 8, and 9 are the 'open' holes. #1 & 9 are more wooded whereas #2 & 8 are truly open. The other five holes, as stated above, are in the woods.
- It's a generally fun, mid-range course. From the short layout, no holes are longer than 253 feet. I had my bag on my shoulder and ended up only throwing two discs my whole round. Granted, those were the two brightest pink discs I have. I figured they'd show up easiest if/when I was searching by light.
- The wooded holes do give different looks. You're throwing around trees and/or under branches to varying degrees during this stretch. Every hole can be an easy birdie, or ace run, while also presenting bogey risks with a bad bounce off a tree. Some decent risk/reward throws for sure.
- #1 is probably the most enjoyable hole on the course. The low ceiling fairway means you're throwing on a rope. Fun layout.
- Holes have tee signs. Pretty informative considering they're essentially homemade.

Cons:

Navigation between holes could be better. There are a couple longer transitions where next tee signs would be useful, even if you're using UDisc.
- Transitions between holes also need to be more clearly defined. I'll say the heavier leaf coverage in spots may have hidden some paths. But, between holes #2 & 3 and #6 & 7, I essentially had to make my own trail to get from one hole to the next.
- I'm not sure about the second layout. Were there longer tees? Was it a second pin position? Regardless, hole distances varied from what this site said and what was on UDisc at times.
- For a short course, it was pretty spread out. Of course, being the contrarian, I'd rather it be more spread out to ensure a better-quality layout.
- It would have been nice to see one longer wooded hole. Even if it was just in the 300-foot range, it would force many/most players to be forced to pull out another disc from the bag.

Other Thoughts:

Washington High School's nine-hole layout was a general success in my book. Coming from Charlotte, I'm familiar with all the school courses around Charlotte and Rock Hill. I'd rather play this school course than many of those courses.
- This is an appropriately-designed layout for casuals, new players, students. It's simple enough that it will interest beginners while also offering the birdie & ace chances for more experienced players.
- It wasn't far from here to the 18-hole course at Beaufort County Community College. Playing these two back-to-back, I knocked out 27 holes in under two hours.
- After five wooded holes, it was nice to have room to be aggressive on #8. An open hole that lets players fade a disc back towards the basket. I'll take my short, gimmie putt here anytime.
- My score would have probably been two, maybe three strokes better if I could see the baskets from the tees. I was throwing based on the listed distances. On one hole, I found my disc, look around, and I'm 10 feet from the basket. I'll say there's an element of luck when you're blindly parking tee shots.
- This is a success in my book. It scores well in both the 'fun' and 'challenge' categories when compared to other short courses. Fun, out-of-the-way course, indeed.

Some Good Short Wooded Holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-A short heavily/moderately wooded course with a few open throws, narrow gap throws, and a some up slope and down slope holes. The wooded holes play along a walking trail. There are a few roller baskets. A creek parallels the right side of the wooded fairways. The course meanders it is way around one side of a high school sports complex.

-There are some tee signs with map, par, and distance. Some holes have short and long tees, and a few combined. Tees are natural and wooden posts are used to mark them.

-No. 2 fairway is shared with a well-manicured football practice field.

-Navigation is counter- clockwise and simple to follow. Except from No. 7 basket to 8 tees.

-The wooded portion of the course will be challenging for new players and recreational. For intermediate and advanced will be a test for the short game.

-From the tee I threw mostly putters, a few fairways, and a driver.

-It's a short drive from the BCCC course. Picking up my disc from the 18th basket to teeing off at No. 1 at Washington only took 12 minutes.

Cons:

-The long tees in the wooded portion of course have overgrowth around the tee and thick on the long fairways. Over hanging branches made it impossible to find a line thru the fairway. The course needs to be cleaned up.

-No. 2 fairway is likely not to be available during football season when the team is using the practice field.

-No. 9 had a small pond to the left of the basket after an inch of rain fell the day prior.

-Some tee signs are missing, and the others damaged or fading.

-About a three-minute walk from 7 basket to 8 tee's with no navigation aide. Walk between woods on left and baseball/softball field on right.

-Some tees are somewhat rutted. Baskets are worn out.

-Just in front of No. 1 basket is a large tree with drain hoses sticking out of the ground coming from the football field. There a tripping hazard. When I took first glance, I thought I was getting ready to step on a snake, the hoses are green and black.

-No. 1 basket has a PA speaker sitting on top of it.

-The wooded holes 3 thru 6 share a walking/jogging trail.

Other Thoughts:

Washington High School course has some good potential if it was cleaned up. My favorite part of the course was in the wood's holes 3-7, tested the accuracy of my putter from the tee's providing some birdie opportunities and a run in with the creek. There are some sweet lines from the back tees if they could be cleared out, when I saw there were back tees from the first short tee, my intent was to play a second 9 from the back, but after seeing hole after hole in the woods cluttered with branches from the back tees, I abandoned the thought and made the 2 ¼ hour trip back home. Too bad, from the back the course would have been difficult. Still had a good time.

If the course were conditioned like the rest of the sports complex, I could bump up my overall rating a few notches. The football stadium was first class, and the baseball facilities were the best I had seen for a high school.

With the development of a short game for new players in the woods, and a skill check for seasoned players my overall rating is anchored on a 3.0. My round took 35 minutes snapping pictures, including my journey down into the creek on hole 5.

Notable Hole:

No. 7 Par 3 at 160 feet is a combined tee pad. Its an elevated tee down sloping to a lazy dog leg right that upslopes. The fairway rolls right to left. The basket perches on top of the hill. The fairway is heavily wooded with gaps as small as 10 feet. There are the remains of a rock border wall that Crosse's the fairway at 45-degree angle 30 feet out that doesn't come into play its only a few feet high, possible its been there since the settlement of the area? I consider it a nice ornament for the hole. However, the hole has overgrowth from start to finish, I threw a fairway driver not because of the distance, but to power my way thru. If cleaned up, would be very scenic.

Signature Hole:

No1. Par 3 at 253 feet short tee from the open down slope thru a gap of trees at 110 feet, gap is 25 feet and narrows into the trees. There is a ditch that runs 45- degree angle from left to right, crossing at 135 feet. The fairway then upslopes. The basket has guardian trees in front of it. There are overhanging branches thru the first gap, my disc was swatted down and rolled into the ditch. With sunlight streaming thru the hole is scenic and gives you an introduction to the wooded portion of the course.

Trouble Hole:

No. 5 Par 3 at 186 feet from the tee is a straight upslope hole with a tree gap 100 feet out and 15 feet wide. Heavy trees both sides. On top of the slope at about 40 feet from the basket the fairway breaks right and slopes down towards the creek 50 feet past the basket, you will not see the slope from the tee. There is brush and trees looking up from the creek. I found myself putting for par from the creek, looking straight up to the basket and blocked.

Decent campus course, now #2 in town 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good enough Mach 1 Baskets.
On a mostly unused part of campus.
Pretty good flow to course, after finding #1. I didn't have a map and was able to follow the course pretty well. No long walks between holes, finishes right back near #1.
Good use of elevation available.

Cons:

Natural tees, several were uneven.
#2 could be unplayable at times, it uses a practice field.
Several of the tee signs were missing, tee markers sometimes tough to spot.
Several branches, and one big tree, down when I was there. But it was in the middle of summer, so understandable.

Other Thoughts:

Actually a pretty decent campus course, starts at the end of the student parking lot, then follows cross country trails through the woods, circles the football stadium and finishes back near the school. The trails from basket to tee were pretty obvious.
Most of the wooded fairways were pretty fair, clear enough to accept a good drive. They do follow the XC trails, so they weren't super tight. Of course, the course is probably not playable if there is practice, or a meet.
Good mix of left and right holes and use of elevation thanks to small ridgelines.
#8 was a fairly long hole on a mostly open fairway, then #9 finishes through a group of pine trees, with a few lines available.
#2 provided about your only open drive, uphill to the nice grass of the practice field, then left to the basket, in the back corner.
This would be a good enough course in this small town to get some practice in, between rounds at a better course. However, with the BCCC course now in town, this course probably only sees rounds from better players if it is a more convenient option. It's also good for course bagging, before or after playing BCCC. Not sure if the school has started a DG club or classes, but this is a great way to get younger players started in the game.
Its not always easy for campus courses to avoid long walks between usable areas and finish back where you started, but they did that very well here.

Only going to get better! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Elevation-Eastern NC courses do not have much elevation change....this course has it. Tight, technical shots that can help your short game.

Cons:

Not enough long holes. Can't play during school hours. Can't play Hole 2 when the football team is practicing (throws over the practice field).

Other Thoughts:

I will raise my rating as the course progresses. I'm really excited to have a course in Washington. This course meshes well with the space provided. Reminds me of the course I learned on (old ECU).
