Weirdly Okay 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A barebones course that's too open, too prickly, but all around squeaks by.

-Basics: Seven acceptable tee signs with hole number, distance and par. DISCatchers for all nine.

-Flow: The course actually flows nicely, starting and ending at a parking lot with no doubling back or overly long transitions.

-Holes (1) and (3): Two really fun holes. (1) is a straight shot with rough on the right and presumably OB pavement on the left that finishes with a gentle right turn on a right-sloping green surrounded by rough. It's a difficult par-3. Hole (3) is a straight ahead par-3 that goes downhill with a low ceiling tree and rough rushing inwards on both sides closer to the basket. These two holes are really nice.

-Other Gameplay: Acceptable, if not particularly engaging. Realistically, every hole should be a par-3. There's a decent balance of open and less open and lengths range from about 100' to over 300'. A bit of elevation, too.

-Update: I saw in many reviews (especially on UDisc) that hole (4) was unplayable. Whether due to a redesign or TLC, it is now playable, though no beauty.

Cons:

-Rough: Yowzers, the rough out here is sharp. I was about 12 feet from basket (1) and had one tricky time even being able to address my lie, much less putt. The rough is plenty thick on (2)-(5) as well. On (3) I gouged myself quite deeply after grip-locking into a pile of lumber overgrown with briars.

-Trash: Several holes at the start had a fair bit of trash in the rough or, on hole (2), in a giant pile in the dead middle of the fairway.

-Navigation: On a big property, small tee signs attached to walls and trees aren't enough to really navigate. I had difficulty specifically from (1)-(2), (2)-(3), and (8)-(9). I also didn't see tee sign (8) until after my round, though it was essentially the same shot if playing basket to basket.

-Shot Shaping: From (5) to (8), it's all wide open shots with zero interest. Additionally, hole (2) is boring other than the inexplicable pile of trash in the fairway, and holes (4) and (9) don't quite have believable lines due to low ceilings.

-Missing Amenities: No tee signs on (6)-(7) are rather an oversight. Similarly, many tees aren't marked besides the sign, leaving the location very subjective. (Some do have Innova markers on the ground.) Forget any comforts like course maps, navigation aids, or practice baskets.

Other Thoughts:

Rarely does a barebones course like this get so long of a review out of me, but perhaps West End has more to offer than many of its type. There are a couple of great holes and some decent other ones. However, thorns to the arm, trash in the nostrils, and missing tees definitely sour the experience. Overall, it's just barely squeaking into my list of Passable courses. Don't hit the rough and you might have fun.

Decent 9 hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course actually has some pretty fun shots with holes that would fit right alongside a quality 18 hole layout.

Holes 2, 3, 8 and 9 offer some neat throws. There are several large trees with huge branches that prevent too much elevation on the shots. But be careful not to run it into the ground while avoiding the branches.

Baskets are really good. Good mix of some trees and let it rip.

Cons:

Navigation is a little tricky. You play alongside a house that must be used as a Rec center. Hole 2 shoots across a cement span with a basketball goal. My errant shot actually naked into the hoop. Couldn't do that in a million more tries.

Hole 4 is super short but a gut shot not usually seen on these smaller courses. Unfortunately it was super overgrown and felt more like a save shot from the deep woods.

No idea where the tee pads were for 6 and 7, just kind of made them up.

Other Thoughts:

Not a destination course, but offers decent variety for a 9- hole. There are several 9 hole courses in the area and this one is near the top.

A plot of land with 9 baskets and 7 tee signs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Hole #1 is an interesting shape.
- Short course that plays quick.
- Baskets are REAL nice.
- Not much chance of a lost disc. There is a fence along the right side of #1 but otherwise it's open.

Cons:

- Uninspired course beyond #1. Half of the course is just walking back and forth across an open field.
- I couldn't find tee signs for 6 and 8. Previous review mentioned 6 is likely missing due to the construction, and is probably correct. I saw basket 8 but couldn't imagine where the tee should be.
- Tee to hole placement for 5-8 could have been better. As these holes are mostly just throwing across a single open field, the walk between basket 6 and tee 7 is odd. You walk across other hole paths and it doesn't follow the obvious flow, so finding 7 tee from 6 basket isn't easy either.
- Basic hole overhead or shape on the tee signs would help, particularly as there are no tee pads to align you. From most tees you can see several baskets that could be targets. For example on hole #1 the basket it tucked to the right off the fairway, and not visible from the tee. However basket #2 is visible from #1 tee, and in the same direction about 120' beyond that cutback.

Other Thoughts:

I really hate to be negative in any way when someone opens their property to the public for disc golfing. Aside from the use of land, there is also the obvious cost in nine baskets and tee signs.
With that said, there isn't much here worth visiting. The layout is confusing because most of the course is open and you can see multiple baskets from each tee. The latter holes mostly cross each other but with an unusual walk between 7 and 8. Only three of the holes are more than open shots with a slight variation in distance and elevation.
A complete beginner could enjoy the walk here and not get frustrated, but there are a few better beginner options within 15 minutes that offer more variety (Rawlinson Road middle school and Fewell Park for example).

There is a very good mix of terrain on the property, and I think they could rebuild with their existing tee poles and baskets and have something really fun. As it stands currently however, it's not much of a course.

Surprisingly decent (and semi-fun) 9-hole layout. Now with 2024 updates!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 28, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

West End Baptist offers a fun, quick round. Of all the short courses in Rock Hill, this is one of the better layouts.
- Course offered a whole lot more than I expected. I swung by to bag the course, but was pleasantly surprised by the entire layout and the variety offered.
- Hole #1 is a solid opening layout - 318-footer - with an open tee shot to a slight downhill, slight dogleg right basket protected by trees/thicket. From there, you get a legit ace-run on #2; a shoot-the-gap, low ceiling throw on #3; and then the 68-foot fourth hole.
- I'll admit, I actually enjoyed #4's layout. It's a narrow gap, flick shot to the basket. For those of you, like me, who have had to pitch out of the rough after bad tee shots, you're right at home with this hole. It can be a simple up-and-down 2, or you can miss the gap, and must scramble for a 3 or worse. Trust me, plenty of people will get 4s on this hole after thinking ace on the tee pad.
- Hole #5 - 8 are all mostly open with slight variances to make it a decent loop. Hole #9 is a decent closing hole with a challenging enough pin placement.
- Course offers decent length - only two holes shorter than 200 feet; two others longer than 300 feet; five between 200 - 299. I played with a fairway driver, mid-range and putter and that was plenty.
- Course is easy to navigate. I was surprised by others' comments about the difficulty of playing. Once you pull into the small parking lot, you see tee signs on both sides. One is for #1, one is for #9. I walked to #9 first (didn't see #1 at first); but once I backtracked to #1, it was pretty easy to navigate. Keep in mind, the tee sign for #6 is gone - the road construction should be a giveaway. After that, you've got a slight walk around the corner to find #7's tee.

Cons:

Course is just 'there' with little effort put in to the layout and/or upkeep. There's more land in the wooded area behind #1 - 4. With a little clearing, you could make this a really good layout. As is, I get the sense, they lucked into a decent layout.
- I don't know what's up with the house/building near holes #1 - 3 & 9. Is it a rec building/meeting place for the youth group? Does a groundskeeper/anybody live there? I was somewhat expecting someone to walk out and talk/yell when I played here.
- Signage could be better, especially for the transition from #6's basket to #7's tee. Also, would like to see someone decide to re-establish a (semi)-permanent tee for #6. I just picked a spot past the construction fence that was away from #5's fairway. For all I know, #6 is really a 450-foot bomber hole.
- No trash cans, benches, amenities, etc. at the course. Go to any of the numerous gas stations/fast food restaurants within 5 minutes of here if that's an issue.
- 1/24 UPDATE: Course is starting to show its age and a lack of upkeep. New playground in front of first tee means there is no clear tee area. Construction work on building has created piles of trash and natural debris, impacting hole #2, 3, & 9. Hole #4's fairway is completely overgrown. Several tee signs are missing.

Other Thoughts:

West Baptist offers a decent 9-hole course. Based on the numbers on this site, very few people play here making this a pleasant surprise.
- Course had aspects that were like York Middle School's layout, which itself, is an extremely under-rated, under-the-radar course.
- I had fun during my 20-25-minute round. I could have played twice, but I choose to leave after a once-through. That probably is the truest statement about the course.
- From here, there are nine other courses within 5 miles. If you wanted to pad your stats, play all these mediocre 9 holers in one day. Like most of Rock Hill's 9-hole courses, each has a couple decent holes. But in the end, unless you live by, it's most likely a one-and-done.
- 1/24 UPDATE: With just a little TLC (as in 1-2 work days), course can be in good shape again. There's enough room in the woods to the right of #3 that you could easily add 1-2 wooded holes and get rid of a hole or two in the wide open stretch of #5 - 8. As is, there are some fun aspects to the course that aren't nearly as fun as they were several years ago.
