Pros:

Western Union Elementary School DGC is 9 holes that's designed and intended for children. It succeeds in that regard. It is actually a pretty fun pitch and putt course for adults as well actually.

The baskets are Innova Discatchers that are all brand new and catch great. One basket and pin position per hole.

The tee pads are natural but all were in great shape. The front of the tee areas are marked by those disc sized metal circles that seem somewhat common around this area. They also trick me into thinking someone left a disc laying on the ground. Especially since they say Innova on them.

The tee signs are pretty basic but serve their purpose. Hole #, distance and par. All the info you need for a short course like this. Helps you easily locate the tee area too.

The hole lengths range from 102' to 298' with 7 of the 9 being under 200'. Great design for elementary school kids. The flow of the course is very straightforward, starting and ending by the southeast parking lot. 3 holes play in the woods with the other 6 being in open lawn area of the school property.

The course is permanent and free to play outside of school hours. Very clean and well maintained course. Likely to never be busy, probably won't even see any others players out there actually.

Cons:

Besides the 3 wooded holes theres just not much for obstacles. Again, it's designed for children so that's kind of the point. Just not going to be very exciting for most players.

Not available for play when school is in session. For obvious reasons.

Not much else to say honestly.

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that will likely take about 20 minutes to play. Nothing to go out of your way to play obviously, but worth a spin at least once. Great place to go ace hunting with a putter.

Honestly it's a pretty decent little course. I'm going to rate it a 1.5 or passable. It's well designed for whom it's designed for.

Western Union Elementary School 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Western Union Elementary is a 9 hole, primarily a pitch-&-putt, course designed with Elementary School students in mind, making it a great place for beginners. The course starts in the playground, and is straightforward navigation throughout. The shortest holes are in the woods, and the longest holes are wide open, offering a lot of leeway to beginners who have an errant shot. The DISCatcher baskets and the tee signs were all in good condition.

I thought Hole 4 was a very pretty hole. (If you ignore the playground in the background.)

There are large fields on both sides of the school that could be used for field work. Hole 7's basket is even in one of these fields, giving you a potential target to aim at.

Cons:

Like other school courses, there are limited amenities and restricted hours that the course is available for play. It plays along and through the playground, so there could even be conflicts on the weekend depending on how often the playground is used. I was there on a Saturday, and one of the fields on the opposite side of the school seemed to be quite popular.

Other than Holes 2, 3, & 4 the tee shots are almost completely wide open. Coupled with the lack of elevation on the property, it lends itself to a somewhat boring round for experienced players. The biggest challenge playing here would be if you show up on a windy day, because Holes 7, 8, & 9 have no real wind breaks.

Other Thoughts:

The course at Western Union Elementary is pretty much as good as it could possibly have been. If longer holes were created, they would just be wide open shots in the field, with nothing to differentiate them from each other, outside of distance. I think it does a good job catering to its target audience, and 'm a bit conflicted on how I feel about it. Ultimately I've decided to give it a 1.0 rating, because despite enjoying the design of 2, 3, & 4 - I felt the other holes on the course either play too close to the playground and/or bring too little variety to the course.

If you live nearby and have kids you would like to introduce to the game, this is a great place to bring them, because the playground is right there and will be a great way to spend time after you're finished with your round. If you're a more experienced player, this area would probably work better as a practice area for field work and practice putting. Otherwise, most players will probably pass on this course unless they're a course bagger trying to nab a quick course to check off their list.

The Fastest Way to Play Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Western Union Elementary is a simple, compressed nine-hole course on the grounds of an elementary school. Well, enough about that.
- Simple, kid-friendly course. Seven of nine holes are in the open. Seven of nine holes are shorter than 200 feet.
- Easy course. Good for practice. The field is good for practice/longer throws.
- #2 & 3 are in the woods. #4, 5, & 6 have trees that serve as some obstacle. The other five holes are open as in there is nothing between the tee and basket.
- Good for a fast round. It took me 15 minutes to play, throw multiple shots on some holes, and take pictures on every hole.
- If you live close by, a good place to practice. And, I'm guessing you're going to have the course to yourself more often than not.
- Course is easy to navigate. Posts in ground mark tees and mostly short walks from hole to hole.

Cons:

Simple, basic layout. It would have been nice to see another hole or two to incorporate the woods, just for variety's sake. Not that the designer had much to work with here.
- Natural tee pads. In case that's an issue on a 180-foot layout.
- In case you're hoping to play this course with only one or two discs, make sure you have one that you can throw 275. That might be the difference between all birdies and a lone par on your round.
- Several holes may interfere with other school activities. You don't want an errant throw on #1 causing an issue.
- You're throwing towards the school on #8 & 9. A bad throw by a student, or anyone, could present problems.

Other Thoughts:

Western Union is aimed at kids. With holes averaging 168 feet, and a lack of obstacles/challenges, realize and appreciate the course who it's intended for.
- By simplicity's sake, holes #2, 4, 5, & 6 are all suitable. Enjoy them because the course gets simple on the final three holes.
- #3 has just enough risk/reward factor to make it interesting. It's 102 feet with just enough trees and tightness to add a level of challenge. If you make a run for an ace, you do bring the risk of smacking a tree into play. Also, there is a small putting circle, so 20 feet long or right, and you're in the woods. Compared to many 100-foot holes, this has more challenge than many.
- Jeremy, the course designer, also designed Waxhaw Elementary just down the road. That's the model for what a short school course should look like. I really enjoy that course. Granted, that course has a lot more terrain and topography to work with.
- This course is perfectly adequate by school standards. Alas, we're reviewing by all course standards. As such, it's not going to stack up to the majority of courses. Good for bagging.
