The Hills Have Eyes!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 13, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetically pleasing:

It's in a very nice area with green grass and little rock damns and the cutest 2 foot bridges that are built over said rock damns. I call them rock damns because I played them as OB and said damn when I landed in them. The surrounding mountains are beautiful, and its mostly quiet except for a few birds chirping, quite peaceful actually at 8am on a Saturday morning.

Space usage:

This course is built in kind of an oblong bowl shape with hills surrounding all sides. Not many trees here but the ones that are here are used quite well as either a suggestion on the right line or guarding a basket in some way. Although mostly flat these hills on the side are used for hole 3 for a fun little downhill throw, even though quite short. The design uses most of the property provided and even circles you back around to the parking lot naturally which isn't the most obvious way the course could have gone, which is appreciated.

Signs/pads/navigation/baskets:

Tee pads are all concrete and in good enough shape and long and wide enough to suffice. There are little wooden stakes in the ground next to the tee pads that show hole number and distance (although not correct) but not where the basket is which is not a problem at all as the navigation is self explanatory and very easy. Baskets are in great shape as it seems like this place gets very little play.

Cons:

It's just a little open and a little short to truly be a great 9 hole course. I challenge the posted distance on the tee signs and here in the hole info; no way some of these 330-360, just not buying that at all. I used to throw that far but not anymore and I found myself even on bad drives jump putting at worst. With so little trees and nothing to challenge bad throws any somewhat seasoned player is going to at least par every hole, bogey would have to be a spit out on a short putt or something.

Other Thoughts:

I had a weird experience while playing this course. Many of the neighbors houses border this park and were checking me out pretty hard. The first neighbor was watering or something then stopped in here tracks and looked at me like I was a leper or something and continued watching me play the course for several minutes. Then another neighbor got in his golf cart, drove to about 200 feet from me and stared at me for a hole and a half before he left. I get the feeling NO ONE comes to this park to play disc golf and maybe anything else? Not sure.

In general it's one of these courses you've seen a million times, nothing special. There are worse courses but there are definitely better ones in the area. If you're a desperate course bagger like myself tick it off the list and if you like courses to yourself you will have that here.

Good length 9 hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good long textured concrete tee pads.
Good quality baskets.
Course length is quite long for a 9 hole course giving it more of a challenging feel.
Has the potential, especially after the trees start to grow some, to be a great 9 hole with some challenging obstacles and distances.
Gives Ammon something besides the short (but fun) McCowin Park, and those 2 microcourses.

Cons:

For now, but subject to change, not very challenging besides the distance.
Not necessarily a con, but be careful about the creek by a couple of the holes, it can and will take your discs!

Other Thoughts:

Would like to see this course in five years when the trees are growing and the course picks up a little local recognition.

Glad to have another local option 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The layout of the baskets is good. The park is new and you can see how this course will develop into a good 9 hole course with a nice mix of distance and technical. Right now it is wide open with little trees. It should be a good in between course for those who don't have time for Freeman and think McCowan is too short and simple.

-Tee pads are concrete and long
-Great signs for navigating
-NO PEOPLE, seriously nobody is ever there
-Good mix of distances
-Made good use of the little elevation they have
-Layout is good if you consider future tree growth

Cons:

-Needs time to develop
-Not very technical, pretty wide open
-Pretty basic course
-Bathrooms, walking path, parking lot, are all in the city plans, but not there yet.

Other Thoughts:

This will be a good local course but not worth travelling to. Longer than McCowan, shorter than Freeman. If you are coming through the area Freeman is still the best destination course for Idaho Falls. Give this course some time and the trees will be great. The course was designed with the future plans of the park in mind. There will be walking paths, parking lot, playground, bathrooms, and possibly water. This stuff will be on the north side and won't interfere with course play.
