List your top 5 favorite courses

Do we have to do 5? It's hard for me to narrow it down that far...

Number one is Maple Hill, hands down.

After that, the list includes...

Harmon Hills
Sugaree
Moraine
Smuggler's Notch-both courses
Mayflower Hills
Deer Lakes
Iron Hill
Deer Lakes
Idlewild
Panther Creek
Muddy Run

Depending on the day, I could include any of these. They are all fantastic, in their own right.

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. That's why I keep posting "If I could play 5 today"

And today(in no particular order) they'd be...

Pocatello Sunshine North - Pocatello, ID
Bear Mountain(unlisted outside of Denver)
Nevin Park - Charlotte, NC
Whistler's Bend - Roseburg, OR
The Fort(18) - Ogden, UT

  1. Munson Park DGC, Denison TX
  2. Holston Creek Park DGC, Inman SC
  3. Noble DGC, Noble OK
  4. Selah Ranch-Creekside, Talco TX
  5. Fritz Park DGC, Irving TX

After a recent trip to the Knoxville/Smoky Mountain area, Hobbs still stands at #1 for me. One thing is for certain though, Eastern Tennessee has some fantastic courses. Sadly we didn't get to play Ashe County. But it is still a priority wishlist target.

So the new list would be something like:

Hobbs Farm
GA Canopy Tours
Langley Pond
IDGC x3
Harmon Hills

Honorable mention: The Canyons

Canyons is that good, eh? I need to get down there.

IMHO Foundation and Camden 2 should be ahead of the other two...

I cant speak for Camden, but i would respectfully disagree with Foundation being better than Fairfield. I played Foundation and Fairfield within a few months of each other, and i could not name one general aspect on Foundation that is superior to Fairfield other than total length. I scored Foundation a 3.756 and Fairfield a 4.3ish, review pending.

Its been a while since you've posted a review tallpaul, always good stuff from what i've read, id encourage you to crack out a few more.

Yes, it is worth the trip. Illinois isn't known for destination courses but I would say The Canyons qualifies. Some of it plays through an area similar to The Dells, so it's pretty hilly for IL and has some water hazards. Plus you can play the "new" West Park layout (opened in '79, just got concrete tees for the first time).

Canyons is way up there on my personal hit list. its actually the second highest rated course among TRs in the state of IL after Fairfield.

4.625 Fairfield
4.346 Canyons
4.341 Foundation
4.321 Camden Park II

I haven't updated my review of the Canyons yet. I've got it as a 4.0 based on the original 18 hole layout with only one set of concrete tees. I've finally played all of the longs and all of the alternate pins. I need to update my review to reflect those upgrades plus the extra 9 holes. I'll be giving it a 4.5 whenever I get around to doing that, but I need to rewrite my entire review since so much has changed.

Fairfield was fun. I started that day on 4 hours of sleep and a 22oz bomber of 8% IPA. It's a bit foggy. I might need to play it again.

In no particular order:

Flip
Idlewild
Turkey Lake T2
Toboggan
Gordon Holton Memorial

Honorable mention for reasons known to few:

Winton Woods :D

Winton Woods would have made my top 5.....in 1985!

Glad to see Harmon climb into your top 5 Thrembo.

Thanks for the quick review of Tommy Shumpert. Your review changed my plan from Victor Ashe to Schumpert and I was not disappointed.

Side note we played Fontana Village on Sunday and it was well worth the trip (and the drive down the Tail of the Dragon).

I personally was pleasantly surprised by The Canyons. Impeccable grooming/amenities, which are usually secondary for me but were noteworthy here. Layout was fun, loads of variety in hole type and terrain, it leaned a bit too heavily towards par 3s for my liking especially given the extra holes and how much the course sprawls out. It's sort of like a slightly lesser, slightly par 3-er version of Deer Lakes to my mind. I liked the play of Highland Park better, though it is much rougher around the edges in several respects.

The courses in the greater Smoky Mountain area are exceptional (the good ones of course). Harmon was surreal. We will have to make many trips up that way to play just the wishlist worthy courses. Etowah was the pleasant surprise for us on this trip. I was a little awestruck with all the courses we rolled through on the trip Schumpert, Kiwanis and Sugar Hollow were all pretty good too.
