[Vibram] Vibram Disc Golf Thread (Part II)

Thanks man for wishing me luck, it paid off. I WON ha totally looking forward to getting some new vibram prototypes!!

Thank you Mr. Dodge for putting on these events, they were a blast!

Good playing the second round with you. You hit the chains a little too solid on 10 - should have been an ace. I'm pretty happy with my Trak - not so sure on the firm Sole. I did hit some longer putts with it.

I was upset but i knew my VP had to much pace on it to stay in, 3 point birdie though is still nice. Yeah i love my Traks, its starting to become my "go to" driver. Its a perfect line shaper, for me at least. If we didn't play from the shorts, I would have picked a Trak for sure. Yeah I'm not sure about a firm putter either. Just seems less grippy than my medium, which is not something I want when i'm putting, driving with the firm isn't to bad though. I'm sure if you picked up a Sole in medium you would like it. I have a 166 medium sole, kinda like blue all over. Just let me know if you are interested.

Haha, so you were that skinny guy. I was the guy that was wearing the Vibram shirt that came with the discs, since I might have been the only person who would fit in a medium.

Anyway, it was fun. I'm almost sure I got the worst scores, but that doesn't matter.

Loved the Summit. Not too crazy about the Ibex.

haha yeah that was me. I was super nervous though someone was going to beat me second round. I got a medium shirt too, i just wanted to wear my blue shirt, plus my shorts were red and that would have been just to much ha. But i throw my Summit a ton. Summit is a great disc, another solid line shaping disc by Vibram. What weight is your Ibex?

We went to an IDGC course afterwards, and I was shaping all sorts of approach lines with the Summit that I usually miss with other putters.

The Ibex is a 178. It's a little hefty for me, but I still like my Cobras. It was just so.... straight.

Nice, I stayed and a couple of us played a 3rd round. But i have a 153 medium Summit, its so easy to turn over and control. I really only use it when I have to go right within 200 feet

The only vibram disc I have is a 174g Summit that I picked up on Thursday. Played an entire round with it earlier and i LOVE it. I think I may want to get something a bit more stable for putting though, so I may pick up a Ridge.

Looks like I am going to build two bags. One MVP and the other Vibram.

It didn't take much convincing for me to convert you haha. One round together and I already have you picking up some lovely Vibrams :)

Just had a thought....on the topic of a MOFWY Vibram driver, wasn't the first mold of the Trak called the Trek and wasn't it really overstable? The yellow Traks with the black dot? So wouldn't Vibram technically have the specs for that mold? Reintroduce the mold as the Trek and release it as the MOFWY. I'd be happy.

The Trek was a retooling of the Ascent in an attempt to make it less stable. They basically created another Ascent that was a touch more understable. This is not the MOFWY that we are all hoping for from Vibram.

How many pros are sponsored by Vibram?

There are five guys on their top level team and twelve guys on their second level team. Then there is the street team and the tester team, the street team is new this year and has fourteen people that were voted on based on entries. The Tester team is supposed to be around 100 people but is currently sitting over that with the popularity of the Vibram Birdie Bashes. Winners of these events earn a spot on the tester team.

In reality only those first two teams are the sponsored players as we traditionally think of them. Those five guys on the top level team are the pros that you might have heard of or you would expect to do well at worlds. I know Dana seems to be having a good year thus far and is who I expect to be the top Vibram player at Worlds this year. I personally get to play with and watch Mitch here in Colorado. He is having a bit of an off year so far but still cashing in ever event I think.

I would like to learn more about the other guys on that top team, it just isn't as easy to do as some of the other manufacturers teams.

Soft discs

A couple weekends ago my buddies and I found Greg looking for tour guides at SeaTac - and he was wearing a Legacy shirt, so we showed him the course. Turns out he was from LA and currently touring the Western courses so that he could review/assist with his buddy's course directory. The next day we took him to Riverside (Sumner) and White River (Auburn).

He had a 2 year old soft Ridge that he wasn't using, so I used it as my only putter for 3 rounds. First time ever using a soft Vibram, and it was glorious. It was amazing for all putts, from 10ft to over 80ft. Used it for straight bullets, tight anny S-flights, and big S-flights that float with good spin. I'm definitely not a push putter. And I find that Vibram discs love the spin.

Afterwards I went online to purchase one (he wouldn't sell me his), and somehow ended up with soft versions of Ascent (166), Trak (167), Ibex (167), and Sole (170). A 164 medium was my current putter. I used them for the first time this weekend. Saturday was White River, while Sunday was Bud Pell and the Kitsap Fairgrounds (great courses).

The Ascent and Trak fly similar enough to their medium counterparts when I get a good release, but getting that good release consistently will definitely take time to develop. Had one really windy hole and the Ascent was thrown up and down, but stayed on course.

The Sole went either left or right of the basket too much when I was within 30ft, but was great for distance putts. It has this great left to right flight that can be done while almost perfectly flat, and I think it may have hyzer-flip in its abilities but didn't get around to testing that yet. Thinking to use it for shots 50-200ft for a while and see how that works. Not sure how much time it will get though, because...

The surprise winner of the weekend was the Ibex. I hadn't used the medium or firm too much previously, but liked what I saw with the medium. The soft, however, had such the beautiful release and flight every time I used it. Straight shots were precise, while the anny upshots had just the right amount of float at the end as it didn't fade. I even used it on the tee pad: when the advanced guys pulled out a big air hyper flip and turn disc, I would throw a lower-to-the ground anny that would glide right into the middle of the fairway around whatever the obstacle of the hole was. I do have a pro Vulcan that I can do that throw with, but I'm not consistent with big rim drivers, so I use it rarely.

Today I had to buy more softs: summit, ridge, VP. Doesn't get too hot in Seattle, so can use softs on many days.

Oh yeah, throwing the soft Ascent seemed to affect my release of a medium Lace. I throw it too high so that it fades too much and too early.

Ahh gotcha. I had heard from someone that the yellow Traks with the black dogs were overstable but maybe not!

Those were, but it wasn't a trek iirc.

Ohhhh so okay forget I said Trek! I'm talking about those yellow and black Traks when the disc was first released. Wouldn't Vibram still have the specs for that run? Maybe re-release it as the MOFWY? Or was it a fluke run? I admit I don't know the specific ins and outs of how that works.
